I'm a pure XC rider. for u u need Iodine or better still Opium. if still takot, Sage! Nokian...for those living in PJ...sure kene toll to go FRIM... at least once... PJ go FRIM, if dun mind longer route can take Jalan Duta to avoid toll. But one needs to factor in the extra petrol needed for the longer detour though. |

From what I researched, there's an added rigidity to the front end when switching from QR to bolts, even if the diameter remains unchanged (9mm).
While no doubt a QR is easier to work with, but when I really think of it, I just have to deal with it twice every ride (mount x1, unmount x1), near the car where tools is easily accessible. Where in the case of a puncture mid trail, I'd have my tools out of the hydrapack anyway. It does takes like a few more minutes to both mount and unmount though. Also notice that when running QR, once a while the tightening tension would be off, causing brake rubs and etc. Clamping force of a bolt on skewer is higher, hence more secure than any QR too. So yeah, this is the cheap man's way of trying to improve the ride... Hopefully. |

QUOTE(Broadica @ Feb 16 2011, 11:53 AM) ic... your explanation does make sense on the tighter tension. Mere speculation on my side since I have no actual experience yet on the conversion, but at the end of the day, it's the leverage ratio of the QR VS an allenkey. Thread depth plays a role too in the ratio I guess.but i'm curious on how much it helps in term of rigidness or stiffness since the dropout is not resting on the skewer but resting on spacer/cap (dunno what to call, the small nub on the end hub where the skewer goes in). but blingness with qr bolt is for sure!! on a side note, should i change my old heavy bomber for a epicon? i felt my bike blardy heavy after touching max's xtc... shit... this been bordering me since yesterday EPICON is around 1.7kg, how heavy is your bomber? At the end of the day it's the sum of all parts, in this case weights. XTC if 1.4kg frame alone. What does your Kona frame weigh? Back to shocks, IMHO adjustability and performance ranks higher than weight for me. Not saying EPICON is junk, infact I'm absolutely in lovin it for what I'm paying for. If weight is your only concern, RST First Platinum is only 1.5kg. A saving of 200gms over EPICON, but you're giving up the shock performance for it. Why not try a more XC friendly tires instead? Rotational weight weighs more than static weight. |
