UniMAP is not using unifi. Some people just think that Fiber = UniFi. Yes, UniFI is using fiber, but its doesn't mean that all fiber infrastructures were UniFI. Fiber is one of the way to projects data from one place to another. Its like a stream (sungai). There are 2 types of data cables, Copper(commonly known for Streamyx/ADSL) and Fiber. Copper have lotsa issue, due to oxidation and it can't stand numerous connection in a row...

All Kolej, and UniMAP premises were connected to each other by using Fiber Infrastructure. The headquarters is at ICT department, kubang gajah...

The fibers will go to the mainframe at each premises. The mainframe Optical Network Unit (ONU) will process the data flows (upstream and downstream) and distribute it using LAN cables. Thats why u only see LAN cable holes in ur premises. Don't forget, longer LAN cables generates more loss..

Why the internet is slow, because UniMAP only fires 5Mbit/s to each kolej kediaman, not by each house. Their not fully utilize the fiber, due to the cost of bandwidth is high. They've been some suggestion to upgrade it to 10MBit/s, but its still under review...

I think the speed would be ok if UniMAP is situated in a single place. Where budget for Preventing Maintenance (PM) is low, and they have the budget to top up the bandwidth. For now, the cost for maintaining the infra is quite high due to the distributed campus, hence less budget to upgrade the bandwidth...

I'm a RNO UniFI team before. Serdang, Cyberjaya and Putrajaya Area. So, I know a little bit bout it. And I feel that the internet issue will only can be help by raising up the speed from 5Mbit/s to 10Mbit/s. But the budget is quite thigh...

So, the conclusion is:
1. UniMAP is using Fiber Infrastructure, but its not UniFI...
2. Fiber can fire up to 10Gbit/s, but UniMAP just only fire 5Mbit/s due to the cost of bandwidth is high...
3. If u wanna good speed, ask ur friend or yourself to stop hogging using Netcon or other hogging bandwidth softwares/hardwares. Its a fair share for all....

Or get your own broadband...

p/s: even me myself feels irritated with the lines. I'm totally relying on it, and I know how it feels like.

What in mt mind also that time is fiber.
I can't deny about low PM if all student lived at 1 location only.
But is it really cut the cost or just a minor cutting cost?

And about 5Mbit, so slow bro, very very slow. No need to ask us to stop hogging netcon and what so ever because the internet so damn slow. Takdak selera pun nak hogging.

Wonder how Uitm Seberang Perai can fire up so much bandwidth to their student.
I was witnessing the power of uitm seberang perai where they can watach youtube 720p with no buffering time. And unimap just fired up 5mbits for one kediaman already block many website.

Seriously it's very hard to use internet in kolej kediaman, luckily unimap management know how slow their internet and give authorized to student to register for streamyx at kolej kediaman since last semester IINM.

Nak buat camne bro? Inilah UniMAP. And they still say their internet is one of the fastest? I just LOL before. Bout the cost, no komen. Based on my observation and the explanation from the staff, yes its kinda costy...

Internet issue is something that can't be help. Have infra, but dun fully utilize. I oso dunno on how to explain to others regarding to this issue. Damn, pening kepala aku...

If you go pauh library, u can play youtube around 12pm to 3pm yo. The line there is quite good. You can really stream without any lag, if no one is hogging the line there of course...

I oso wanna register streamyx this sem. But I heard that Kg Wai is moving later. So, its not worth at all...

Oh gawd! You serious? Permission has already been granted to install streamyx in kolej kediaman? You guys are a bunch of lucky chaps la. My time when we were in need of urgent fast speed internet connection, kena pergi library. Sometimes need to stay there the whole day until the library closes.

Not lucky actually, all this because good MPP that heard student voice that complaining about internet in kolej.

but but.....i heard want pindah liau.. T.T....... haha..... it's my final year.... T.T......

Why don't UniMAP try and ask around for suggestions in order to solve this internet problem? See my siggy...that's the internet speed in NUS. NUS easily has 5 times more students compared to UniMAP and yet their internet speed remains as fast. They can do Youtube 1080p streaming without buffering, MP3 downloading (average 4MB) in less than 10 seconds, watch live BPL matches with minimal disruption, and so on.

I am not sure how it works in NUS but their internet bandwidth seems to grow with the number of users.
