To all working adults here,

How do you find the balance between work, games and other commitments ie. sports, relationships, family etc?

I guess I'm considered "young" in this working society - 2+ years experience, stable career, in a relationship, good mix of friends and most of all absolutely love gaming. I must've been deprived of gaming during my childhood and now when I can afford to buy my own rig and stuff, I could only manage the occasional 2-3 hours per night, which is nowhere near the hardcore gaming standards of 8-10 hours a day lol.

Let's discuss if you gamers feel the same way (deprived) and how you juggle between career, commitments and some serious gaming smile.gif

i think "Serious" gaming is out of our vocab..

once you starting working and all its more towards casual gaming.. just to release stress or have fun...

but for other countries where they have strict work/life balance where you after 5 go home and do your own thing then its different..

but here in kl its only work work work eat.. sleep go out shopping mall walk walk..

very very hard.
from semi pro quake 1,2,3, player to noob donkey in etqw when started working.

The time to spend on games is way way less than before where there were nights that you can go CC with buddies and weekends you can spend over IRC playing with overseas players.

When work starts, it takes away all those times, and leaves you with weekends where you don't want to see a computer hence not sit and play games anymore.

Not only working...even I as a full time undergraduate find it hard to find time to play. Casually playing will be fine.. like 1-2 hours a day, and more a bit on weekends.. going pro / hardcore.. thats totally out

actually for me it depends on what game.. some game can take u 1-2hours per day.. some game can take 5-6hours per day.. i used to spend my weekends playing bad company 24/7. not sleeping. lol. but now had to slow it down.

and it also depend on what job u have. i'm an it technician, work from 9am-6pm,5days a week. after 6pm totally time for my own, dont have to think about work. others might have to think about their work even after their working hour.

You mess up at work, that's it noone gonna pay your bills biggrin.gif

I play mostly on weekends.

I'll have to either work late or work-out in gym on week days.

You can still go semi-pro on certain games with the condition that you play only & ONLY that game (example StarCraft 2) when you have the free time.

I used to hit StarCraft when I was still schooling since that was the only game I could afford & time was abundant. When I started working, it was the other way around. I have moolah to spend on other genre of games that I've missed out all these years such as all those RPGs but due to insufficient time, I've to give up on StarCraft 2 playing time.

24 hours is no longer enough these days. sad.gif

To sum it all up:
Schooling days: train myself silly in StarCraft. It was all about being pro & gosu. I don't know what are NWN, Baldur's Gate, Diablo (& all the other interesting games) all about.

Working days: play all those games with great lores, stories & full of LULz. The word pros & gosu mean no shi- to me anymore. Woah BioShock! LOL'ing at Heavy singing Bieber's Baby in TF2. Singing Still Alive along with GLaDOS in Portal's credit pages~

And oh~ having a life partner that appreciates games are very important too. I've seen friends who gave up gaming due to their partners' nagging about how games are a waste of time & money. Yeah, as if all those manicure & beauty spa sessions will save the world one day. doh.gif

I am single, my workplace's not too far from my home and I sleep late. So I get about 3-4 hours of game time every weekday. Weekends are even better. smile.gif

every night, come back from work (reach home about 6 pm or 7 pm), played for 2 or 3 hours.

Problem is I waste more time on choosing a game to play.

My "career" sucks. It eats up so much of my time that I had to abandon games that require significant amounts of commitment to produce satisfactory results, like any city building game and Minecraft. It adds insult to injury knowing my dead-end job has nothing to do with the fundamental reason I love these games: The ability to create and design. As a matter of fact, I'm planning to quit my job and pursue an arts-related career. Finally.

In the meantime, I only have Team Fortress 2 as company, and boy, do I play hard. Casual Muka Buku games have never been my cup of tea.

Im still a student, a 4th year student. I dont really get much time to play, since like 2 years ago where i was part of a society that take up a lot of my time on weekend. Now, im working for the uni, as researcher. When semester starts, i doubt i can do more than 20 hours of gaming per week as there are a lot of assignments to do. :/

Seems like my time of gaming is pretty much in inverse proportion with the rig i have. The better computer i have, the less time i have to play games on it.

I wonder how little time i'll put on games when i work and so on.

Facebook games are the scum of game designs. They barely innovate, and all they love to do is iterate the same shit with different flavor.

Same goes with a lot of iphone games.

Nah, not just that, Starcraft 2 sucks up a lot of time too.

I gave up on that game because it's either i take Starcraft 2 or my entire game library. I pick my Steam game library and SC2 is collecting dust now.

I've been working for close to 3 years now. Been gaming for almost 20 years now.

I would say that working wasn't the real threat to my gaming time... It was and still is my fiance, whom I met in uni.

She's not at all into gaming and she's very sociable (Unlike myself). So, I basically game whenever she's out with friends or if we're together, whenever she's doing work. So, that amounts to maybe 5-6 hours for all working days and another few hours over the weekend.

Funny thing is, my work colleagues are gamers themselves, so after working hours, we sometimes sneak in an hour or two before leaving.

But basically, as I got older, I stopped gaming as much but instead started reading more about gaming (Since this was something I could do at work wink.gif). I spend more time going to RPS, here and some other random shit that comes my way than actual gaming these days. I also tend to dabble in quite a bit of flash and web games these days. I did try a Facebook game called Fantasy University (From one of the guys who did Kingdom of Loathing, but with better art) and its splendid!

I don't feel I'm missing out on "game time" since my priorities have shifted dramatically ever since getting a job... But its a lot different for me since I also have a fiance to handle. I'm not complaining, but she's a wonderful girl and gaming will have to play second fiddle to that.

i've been working for 5 years now. got 2years old daughter. really miss my old gaming days during my jobless time (finish school, before uni). can play around 18hour everyday to finish final fantasy and chrono cross, RE, dino crysis. During uni years, not much gaming except solitaire and drug lord. now working 8-6, only play around 11.30 until 2am (not every night but on every weekend). woke up at 7 to go to work. well seams like i only sleep 5 hours per day. but thats the optimum sleep time for adult. now got psp to play anywhere, xbox at home, gaming laptop if need to get serious, anyway, when there is a will, theres a way.

Tip No. 1: Wife/Girlfriend and computer games do no mix together.

Sex hours vs game hours situation you know brows.gif

Spermshooter has left the game. RAGE QUIT!!!

Tip No. 2: Learn how to fast travel.

This where hours of Gran Turismo pay off. But the different is summonses, car damage and excessive wear/tear.

Tip No.3: No Grinding.

Quest in progress. Get comission base job not work hours.

I've been working for 5+ years now. I have to say that I still treat gaming somewhat seriously - got a PS3, 360, and play PC games too.

The biggest difference over college years I feel is just two things: (1) nowadays cannot play MMORPG anymore, and (2) nowadays I don't go for 100% completion of gamerscore/etc, hehe. Got not enough time smile.gif

Unlike when I was studying.

However, I have a way better rig now than I had when I was studying though. Used to be mid-range rig, now high-end rig.

uh so true,

when in college, low-middle rig - super lots of time for gaming
when working, high end rig - so so time for gaming depends.

for me,
every weekdays nite i will spend around 1-2 hours to play then go downstairs lepak with my son and wife.
every weekends, depends..sometime no time at all sometime i can spend max 3-4 hours only

So far it has been, work till range of 7-9pm. Head home, dinner for an hour with my girl, boot up machine and game till midnight. Probably 2-3 hours a day.

Weekend is more easy going, the earlier I boot the machine, the earlier I start gaming until my girl pulls the power plug.

Really hope that I can spend a bit more time in the games that I bought though, feel that it is such a waste to miss out on the gems that I have...

I have my own company so I guess I'm more flexible with my time but there is no more serious game session that would last the whole day. I usually play whenever I'm stressed out from work or have finished the task for the day. Even that 2-3 hours tops.

Another change is that, I usually try every game I consider even the least interesting. These days, very selective considering amount of time I can spend on it.

Another is games that I actually completed. Sure I still do get quite a few games every now and then but how many have I completed? Probably very few. On my PSP I think I've only finished like 3-4 games from the day I bought it which is 2 years ago. PC is probably a bit more since there's more nicer games but again, the count is rather low compared to my student's days. Most would just hang somewhere in the middle and forgotten.

The bolded part. I used to think that way until I realize that I've to spend some time paying bills online, calculate my daily / monthly expenditure, catch up on some latest news (you need to know what those of the higher echelons are doing with the tax you're paying them) & take some well-deserved rest. These are stuffs that will deduct your gaming time even more, at least that's what I'm experiencing.

Seriously, after I start working, I do not have the mood to play those games already. ( Especially those that required long term playing hours ). I usually play games like minimum of 2 hours max of 3 hours everyday. Unlike during college, play from morning until night. LOL

yea, i can live without gaming, but why would i live without gaming?
it is ntg wrong for gaming if you know how to prioritize and organize your time. always know family and work comes first and play on extra time, wats wrong with that?
and why is gaming so 'wrong'? what is the different between spending 1 hour on gaming and 1 hour on tv? seriously, you mean after marry got son liao den you shudnt have any entertainment anymore? some ppl go swimming, some go jogging, some read, some tv, so why cant we continue gaming?

in short, you just have to know gaming is just an entertainment, ntg more ntg less.

I doubt so, as gaming isnt much different than one playing golf, watching football, playing with speakers/amps/subwoofer. It's a personal hobby, and i think, even if you are married, a CEO and have 10 kids. I dont see any reason to give up a personal hobby for family/career and so on. Unless you want to be a robot working 24/7.

Gaming is just a hobby for me, as i enjoy playing games and at the same time, seeing technology evolve. Also, i dont play games for any benefits as it's just entertainment.

gaming closes a person up in their own world rather than allowing them to get in touch with nature, real people and in short: getting a life out there.

gaming has also been considered by many researchers and psychologists as an activity that can hinder actual development with the real world and real people. A hardcore gamer would show more withdrawal from the people around him, being more introverted and also lacking social skills. It might impact the way he communicates with people, being difficult adjusting to others, showing more irritability, and other side effects.

Yes there's nothing wrong if u wanna play a short game... but make sure your loved ones around u understand your need and that you would not jeopardize your relationship with them later. Wives do leave their hubbies because of being too attached to computer games (or even just the internet) due to them lacking self control and in the end lacking the ability to cope up with her needs.

Find your justification to game more... if it is what you want... as what i said is the truth from actual research that's been done out there + stories from people who have went through it.

It's your life in the end, i'm just voicing out what I know wink.gif

in the end, it depends on how each individual copes with their gaming and social life

i seen hardcore gamers who are friends of mine, having a normal social life

me on the other hand, everything normal but hiccup when it comes to girls sweat.gif

(searched for: "how gaming computers affects your personal life social life research" in Google)

I'm working in the IT field with a degree in it. Am myself a hardcore gamer before during my schooling days and currently doing all I can to cut it off (gaming life now reduce to several hours a week)

I still have that slight wanting-ness to wanna open up a game and play, but as age and maturity catches up for me, I'm putting it aside and setting it as lower priority, putting what's most important in life first.

I'm not saying games are all bad without any good... some of the good that I've experienced myself are increased cognitive skills, faster response than others in reflex, making you a sharper person. Internet itself is good in building up knowledge, searching for answers, and providing convenience. But the negative outweights the good once a person gets addicted to the net/plays too much. That's my whole point of bringing this up.

And in my field, 8 hours a days in front of the PC at work.. and asking me to go home to more PC staring... no man.. I gotta go out, mix with my friends, movies, gym, dating etc and really get the fulfillment outta life. Computers does break u apart if you let u take control of you.

Ok, I'm just jumping in now since it just got interesting. It seems like you're making the claim the video games are addictive?

Let's examine the links:

QUOTE(Davidtcf @ Jan 8 2011, 06:54 PM)
First of all, using Wikipedia as a source of research, is not a good idea since the information may or may not be right.

But despite that, this article quotes its sources well and ironically, doesn't actually agree with your idea. Yes, there are individuals addicted to video games, but there is inconclusive evidence to suggest whether its video games that are addictive or that people with addicting personalities LIKE playing video games (Meaning to say these people get addicted to stuff easily, and so video games are easy due to the high mental stimulation required).

Its in this paragraph, where its discussing the negatives of video game influences:
QUOTE
Violent video games have been tentatively found to decrease prosocial behaviors. Prosocial behaviors include activities such as giving to charity, volunteering and overall "helping" behaviors.[5]  However this has not been supported by research in large populations, as a majority of people who play violent games do not lack prosocial behaviors. It is likely that those who lack prosocial behaviors tend to play violent video games. Other researchers have claimed that exposure to violent video games has predicted alcohol consumption, destruction of school property, and other delinquent behaviors.[6] Not only have video games have been shown to influence self perception,[7]  but they may have a link with body image assessment of the opposite gender. Female video game characters are often hypersexualized and unrealistic,[8][9] and have been shown to play a factor in hard-core gamers' perceptions of ideal beauty.[10]

QUOTE(Davidtcf @ Jan 8 2011, 06:54 PM)
This is more of an observation. He doesn't actually conclude whether or not video games are addictive but rather insists that more research should be done on the issue (Last few lines in the last paragraph).

QUOTE(Davidtcf @ Jan 8 2011, 06:54 PM)
These two links are irrelevant since they're not research based at all and are based on unknown conjecture.

Anyway, there are actually plenty of people that play video games... Are you claiming that each and every one of them is doomed to be single with no friends for the rest of their lives?

Video games (so far) haven't been proven to be addictive or otherwise. But the evidence suggests that its not addictive simply because there are millions of people playing video games and only a small handful exhibit addiction to it. Its kinda like the whole Columbine massacre ("OMG, DOOM makes kids violent and murderous!").

Honestly speaking, and I'm not trying to do character assassination here, but it looks like you yourself seem to be struggling with computer addiction. I'm not saying that what you're experiencing is wrong or bad (I wish you all the best in overcoming it)... But it looks like you're assuming that since it happened to you, it MUST be able to happen to everyone else. There's no evidence or study that suggests that... for now.

Well, I suppose that's that.
I cant say that I'm not worried about gaming addiction, but H@H@'s post concludes any confusion about gaming on my part.

I dont think we need to think too hard on how to "balance work, games and other commitments ie. sports, relationships, family etc" as TS wants as long as we stay away from competitive gaming like Starcraft 2. Too much practice needed if you want to really ladder, not to mention you need to keep playing periodically to prevent your rank from falling, imo. Also, probably stay the hell away from MMOs, especially WoW tongue.gif .

Gaming is just the same as other hobbies, is it so f***ing hard to accept that ? and once ur married, staying in the house with wife and kids, can you play with them all the time and not have enough time to game. That's illogical. And as if gym, sports and etc take up all the time in the world.

I've had an extremely social life since i was 15, and i don't see how it is superior to being a gamer at the same time. Going out all the time is pretty boring, you gotta stay at home and game sometimes.

I think this is the most important part, as games like Starcraft 2, WoW or even CoD to some extent, you need a lot of commitment to it, as if you live a second life. MMOs too. Avoid those games, if you can as you will either waste your money (thanks to their stupid 60USD per game policy) or you will lose your social life as you need to much commitment to it.

Not surprised for a company like Activision who aims to make games for lifeless "geeks" that have no social life.

I play games from other companies now, like EA, THQ or some indie games (not minecraft cause i heard it can be utterly addictive too), as those games takes less time, while still have the depths i love.

I have a huge backlog games, as i tend to pile them up during sales. It doesnt matter as i tend to play slowly, just to enjoy the atmosphere and gameplay.

Will get back to them when i can, like no good new games coming out.

What's your reason for being a hardcore gamer? If there really isn't one then I suggest keeping to the same routine. A good balance in life is good.

I play 2-3 hours a day as well just before I sleep and even though I finished the games later than most, I still enjoy the game for what it is cause that's the most important part. I have tons of games that are old and waiting to be finished but there really isn't a deadline to begin with. Besides, whenever you don't have anything to do, there will always be a game waiting for you now isn't it? biggrin.gif

my own two sens.. i personally binge.. i have a very time consuming job. 6 day weeks.. and 12 hours a day (except saturdays) and a gf.

so sometimes i end up playing one game for around 4-5 hours a day for a few days. and then stop. almost completely. either because ive finished the game, or ive run out of steam. usually have my sessions at 10/11pm until wee hours of the morning. and survive the rest of the day with coffee and adrenaline.

How Do You Balance A New Baby And Gaming?

user posted image

QUOTE
Commenter Jopeter explores the joys of trying to balance gaming with a newborn baby in today's installment of Speak-Up on Kotaku.

So I became a dad roughly a week ago and my initial thought was "YES. Free from work, the kid will sleep all day and I can finally complete some of the games I have acquired the last couple of months."

Of course I was happy for becoming a dad, and my newborn daughter is so beautiful and all that, but this is a gaming site so let's stick to that. smile.gif

It never occurred to me that I didn't have the time to complete these games while my girlfriend was pregnant and needed me all around and everywhere all the time, so how the hell would I succeed now that this little spawn of mine needed one of us every 2-3 hours 24/7. Adding to that my girlfriend got pretty beat up giving birth to our treasure so she needs a lot of rest atm. In other words: GF = vending machine for milk and I'm doing all the other fun tasks.

So how can I game while still having to take care of my baby? My friend with two kids, former hardcore WoW'er, said it was impossible, but I really wanted to prove that even though you get a new family member you don't have to give up on your hobbies or desires in life.

I found that the answer was divided.

Yes, my baby needs me a couple of hours each day and also requires me on standby, so I could just forget about raiding with my guild in wow and my character now has a well-deserved break from gear hunting. All other MMO's or any other games that require you available and 100% focused for a hours is a no-go.

In other words: Games with a pause-button are pure win, so I stick to those for now. Since I just bought my PS3 I had a good amount of games to complete, starting with the God of War collection. Fantastic games and I just started God of War 3. After this I have Uncharted 1&2 and Heavy Rain waiting for my attention.

Where do I go with this? Well my friends said it was impossible to be a gamer and a parent, and I proved them otherwise. It also turns out that the lights and sounds entertain my baby and I could swear I heard her first "giggle" while ripping the head off a Gorgon yesterday.

How do you combine gaming with kids? I'd love to know.

About Speak-Up on Kotaku: Our readers have a lot to say, and sometimes what they have to say has nothing to do with the stories we run. That's why we have that little box on the front page of Kotaku. You know, the one with "Got something to say?" written in it? That's the place to post anecdotes, photos, game tips and hints, and anything you want to share with Kotaku at large. Just make sure to include #speakup in your comment so we can find it. Every weekday we'll pull one of the best #speakup posts we can find and highlight it here.

As an undergrad myself, I have sacrifised one of my sem gpa down the river due to hardcore competition of starcraft 2. I play about 5 hours per day for training.
I do not have enough ENERGY to study after 5 hours of gaming even if I had the time.

Since then I've quit sc2. When I return to the game, I have dropped to platinum from diamond, but then oh well... No hardcore gaming if need to be committed to work or studies.

I think nowadays too many people think, if you want to play games, you HAVE to be good at it. Hence the need to spend hours on end trying to perfect that build order.Competitive gaming notwithstanding

IMHO, a true gamer just wants to PLAY games. So i suck at certain games big deal.. i LIKE playing it. And once awhile i played games that i'm good at it. Of course, you will even had to play games that you did not like.. but hey you learn to crawl before you learn to walk.

I've learned to not dwell on whether i have time to game which sometimes does creeps in. I just tell myself that gaming time will always be there sooner or later.

Well, considering that you have already so little time.

Losing every game you play because you suck so much, it not fun at all.

I work on weekdays, I have classes on weekends. Also I have to deejay for an online radio once in a while and do photoshoot. And yet I am in 2 racing league (PC - rFactor and PS3 - GT5) and still am managing Kelantan in Football Manager.

Is it easy? Not really, but i do try finding some time where I tell my friends, "I need this time for me, please do not bother me unless it's important", and they as all friends do, understand this. And I found that I don't need every night to game. Just odds one is enough for me to practice and keep up with stuffs. And I still have quite a lot of time to do my backlogged work and study.

I have yet to see anyone who sucks at ALL games... well some exceptions biggrin.gif . That is why you have the option to play games that don't make you feel so "bad". Seriously, if you feel that you sucked at all games, does not derive any pleasure from games, you're better off not gaming. Simple choice.

"Its not the destination that matters, but the journey that's important"

Not all games have to be about being good at it. I know plenty of gamers who have a blast finishing games on Easy mode or people who play coop games at Easy and still find it entertaining (Like still having fun despite wiping out in a round of L4D). Hell, I know a guy who only played DoW who only used Orkks (Because that's what he used IRL) but still enjoyed himself regardless of whether he wins or not in our little team MP battles among friends (And he wasn't very good with them, so this wasn't often). I used to also play CoH with a guy who would only use peculiar strategies that never worked (So being teamed up with him meant you were going to lose), but we all still had a blast talking about those matches at our teh tarik sessions after (And I'd argue that he had more fun than most of us).

Besides, with most MP games now focusing on playing as a team, being just an average player will be enough to win if your team is good and also being really good doesn't mean you'll always win because it still depends on your team (And I would say, it would probably suck more for you if this were the case, so this is an example of being good at a game and still not have fun with it).

This sort of realization will eventually come with age. It's different for everyone. Some might realize it when they no longer have enough time to game, for some when their reflexes start to deteriorate, and sometimes it just hits them like a sudden epiphany.

You can't be an 1337 gamer forever.

Wow great responses. Guess most of us are in the same vicious dilemma.

Someone asked me earlier what do i do - I am currently in the corporate banking division with a foreign bank. Decent working hours, as long as I get my work done, my boss doesn't breathe down my neck.

IMO, gaming is fine as long as we understand what our priorities are, which after reading everyone's post - most of us do know that. No crazy stories of losing jobs, gf/wife run away etc. haha smile.gif

From 3.3 to 2.0. So embarrassed to tell my parents that time...

But hey, i've returned to light gaming... Now i'm finding how to get Angry Birds to run on my PC without the maximum texture error. The most dumbest PC conversion game, I can play starcraft 2 at ultra details but cant start Angry Birds. =.=

When I was a student, used to stay up till late at night, sometimes even all night to play games to level up char, earn exp, find golds, etc in rpg games (Diablo 2, Baldur's Gate 2, Icewind Dale, etc).

After entering university, still play when got no assignment but tend to avoid rpg games coz cannot commit long hours to it (play a few days, then stop do assignment for a few weeks, come back totally forgotten where I'm at in the storyline or lost interest already).

Now working, play during off-work hours if not too tired, only certain games I like will I re-play twice in hard mode or find hidden items to unlock achievement. Most just play on normal for storyline and be done with it. Multiplayer totally no time, just single player campaign smile.gif

I find that MP session is one way to get my gaming fix. It's play and forget. Not MMO tho. Login, shoot/be be shot at/curse/be cursed at, log off, be done with it. Damn sound too much like a "quickie" heheh

Same here.

SP can pause, take a piss / go out / etc, come back then continue gaming.

Too bad, there are fewer SP games these days.

I also like SP. I hate playing MP and strategy games becos I suck. Dont have so much time to upgrade my skill. More to casual gaming few hrs per week maybe during weekend.

When schoooling time can spend whole night until parents wake up and call me go sleep to play games. Thats why waiting for D3 come out can play single player mode. I enjoy the story compare to MP rushing to kill diablo without knowing what happen

Seems like I'm late for this boat... however..

After realizing my gaming time is being swept away bit by bit, I started a backlog. www.backloggery.com

Here I put up all the experience / journey for every games I play so that although how hard it is to spend some 1-2 hours gaming per day, I would proudly look back at the backlog and say that I managed to complete 100% on some of the game I have, rather than buy an RM 1++ game to only be played once and off to the shelf...

Err.. some of the post here almost bring tears to my eyes... at it seems so close to my own feelings that its almost felt like my own heart is reading that post...

Reading this thread makes me kind of sad since I will be going into the working phase of a human's life next year. Guess I will just enjoy my last year of hardcore gaming. It's either full of time but no money or full of money but no time, ain't no happiness anywhere.

I wish you good luck on this endeavour my fellow gamer thumbup.gif . In my own experience of juggling work, family and gaming made me realise one thing, when you only have little time to play a game, you would make every effort to make every second counts (after you settle all your daily chores/the family asleep nod.gif ). And if you keep notes on your gaming session, and read it back one day, you would feel the sensation of achieving something (in my case anyway) smile.gif

yeah, I remember that time, student life was the heaven of my gaming life. Maybe its luck for me as I already have a steady girl back in high school (currently my wife smile.gif ) So I had more time to play games rather than court girls... tongue.gif . And lucky for me also, my house / dorm where I stayed back then was with friends of the same principe as I have, Games > Girls (lucky none of them were gays laugh.gif ) And as we were in the IT line of learning, we made ourself comfortable in the place by networking every single comp in the house. So, when we game, we game together... I remember playing Collin Mcrae, counter strike, starcraft and even some battlerealms, not to mention some serious sam on network play. When you see some good gamers and become their friends, than you would understand that its not about geeking or nerding all the time around, I mean saving the world is often a task that requires teamwork

sorry for the bla bla bla... I'm an old man you know... smile.gif , and reminiscing memories like this makes life more enjoyable to live.... nod.gif

This is a really old thread, but i would like to share my experiences here.

I usually play any games that suits my liking, for now i'm playing WoW, CSS, SC2, and recently picked up BF3. At the same time, i wanted to go pro as a CSS player, well i know its almost impossible in Malaysia, but who cares.

Working time is from 10am-8pm/12pm-10pm, 3 days morning and 3 days night shift, Tues/Sat/Sunday my morning shift, the other day my night shift, Monday as my off day, reach home also about 9pm/10.30pm, bath takes me 30 minutes, so usually start gaming at around 10pm/11.30pm.

Usually i will pick 1 hour time to play CSS, play all 5 official map used in tournament with death match mode on to make sure my aiming is still stable, train smoke grenade tricks and so forth.

After that i will be free to play any games, depending on what my friend are playing, or else i will be playing CSS scrims or level my WoW toon, slept around 2-3am.

It's very unhealthy i know, lol.

P/S: Incase you're going to say i got no life or anti social, i spend my family day on Saturday after 8pm, Sunday night yum cha session with my friend.

yeah, same goes for me, except I'm playing everyday... got home, spend time with family, help with some of the housework, take care of children... when they sleep, my gaming spirit awakens (and thats around 10pm-12am)... at first its hard to actually able to play when you are already exhausted with the chores... but after some good few month, the energy comes automatically knowing I had so many backlogs to play (to justify my spending of the game in the first place) and so that all that money spent wont go to waste (membazir shakehead.gif )

depends on the person, if he's a gamer, and financially sound, there are more than one could think of

and if he's a gamer and not so financially sound, well, there are still more than he can buy by justifying it.. example, I have a friend that rather spend money on games, rather than go drinking an RM200 Booze laugh.gif

just my 2 cents

I'll take games over booze anytime, seriously, as RM200 can get me tonnes of games, while booze is just one night and a few toilet trips.

I still take booze from time to time, cause games cant really give the experience of drinking real booze. biggrin.gif

No getting drunk in Witcher doesnt count, nor even close.

Sigh, there's always a hint of sadness when I think of how much free time I had during university days. I was a hardcore gamer since young up to the point of graduation. Completely stopped gaming except for PES and NFS during first few years of working... until Dragon Age came out.

Dragon Age blew my mind mostly due to the fact that I love a good story-telling RPG and also technology had changed so much since I stopped gaming before that. What was impossible before had become possible. I did waste a lot of time on games after that. After work everyday I tried to squeeze in a couple of hours at least and weekends were wasted too.

One fine day I was logged into WoW on a Saturday morning and I realized how bad the addiction had become tongue.gif So, I stopped a while and now it's an occassional thing. Becomes crazy once in a while but I manage to keep it under control and spend time elsewhere...

Ahh video games, can't live with you, can't live without you...

from wat i see, we all and griping about the fact that we all used to be hardcore gamers during our schooling days and can only play davey jones version since we got no moolah, moolah all go to CC or magic or pokemon. then now we are working, we got the moolah but can't afford to spend time playing them sad.gif

my working place is very near to mine, so i normally reach home around 630pm. my gf is studying in KL and i'm in Penang....so that kinda gives me a bit more time to play since going out together at night is not possible tongue.gif just phone calls before sleeping or sometimes gaming have to take the backseat.

almost everyday i'll get to play at least one HoN game with my friends. usually the total amount of HoN session is 2 hours. and after that i got to spend some time playing Utopia (online text based game) as the usual time for my kingdom to "wave" is midnight or 1am.

and yeah, i usually don't have enough sleep and have to drag myself up from bed every single monday, tuesday, wednesday, thursday and friday.

weekends is gaming haven for most ppl, but not for me as i've things to do on weekends which usually takes up half the day or sometimes whole day.
