Hi,

I am newbie in LCD tv. I am planning to buy my first LCD TV and my budget is RM 1500. The main criteria is

1. 32 inch is ok.
2. Full HD (1080p)
3. Good for playing action movies like avatar, 2012 and transformer at full HD smoothly without any delay or lag from bluray or media player.
4. Can plug via hdmi to my Asus o’play r3 media player.
5. Child proof- difficult for young child (below 3) to push it.
6. Nice colors. LED model within the budget is ok.
7. USB input for connecting to pc or images on portable hd.

From my survey in the newspaper, I found the following:

The images scanned from Courts Mamooth advert-star newsapper- 31-12-2010

The philips 32PFL3605 fits my budget and looks good.

I am very confuse with all the LCD and LED TV out there. If someone can recommend a good brand with the above criteria, I will be happy.

first is..LCD ain't that nice for me...but LEDlitLCD looks just right..

If you are buying installments, compare Courts to AEON credit...so far for me AEOn credit is better...

The comes the size...32inch..come on...go for at least minimum 40inch.

1.5k can get 42in plasma hd ready. To me still better than 32in full hd. Due to the 16:9 ratio 32 in looks very small compared to old box tv.

distance does play an important factor when choosing tv size.no point getting a 55 inch when ur space is jz a condo/apartment unit

but i jz feel 32 inch is rly small for a main tv.i live in a average space condo and 40 inch is jz nice,46 inch is ok.

If for living hall main tv, better get 40 inch. 32 inch is just way too small, it is nicely fit for bed room only.

I suggest you add on extra RM300 to get a 40 inch. Added extra RM300 is not a lot but the experience you get is far different. If you can't spend extra RM300 now, better just wait a while till budget enough just get. Nothing harm by getting late a bit.

With price of RM 1,800.00 you can get a decent nice 40 inch 1080P Full HD LCD - Samsung LA40C530

Hi,

I finally bought my first LCD

user posted image

TV model: sharp LC-40L500M
Price: RM 1900
Specifications: manual

I bought the TV due to the following reasons:
1. Full Hd & 40 inch
2. Pc input & price was reasonable
3. Reputable manufacture

Questions

1. There is a service USB port on the TV. Does anyone have any software that can access the TV USB port? I am just curious what tweaking or extra things that can be done with the USB? A picture of it can be seen in the datasheet.

2. What does it mean when it states the following for this TV?
a. HD-ready / HD-ready 1080p: yes/yes
b. HDTV / HDTV 1080p: no/no
The above info taken from this tv specs.

3. I have a asus o’play r3 media player. When playing via hdmi cable through my external USB hard drive a 800*1080 movie (6.3 GB file), I notice some lag and greenish pixilation. My question is this due to the media player, data transfer from external USB hard drive, movie file or TV? I tried a short HD movie (1920 X 1080) and it worked smoothly.

4. Under the TV specifications, it says HDMI input at 1080I/60Hz. What does this means? I was told if the frequency is less than 100 Hz, high action scene such as sports show up as blurry. Will this affect movie performance also?

user posted image

5.
For the pc compatibility chart, it says it can show at 1400*1050(see below). Can it go higher if the pc has a video card which supports higher resolution?

user posted image

I hope I can get some answer from the experience people on these questions. Since this is my first LCD TV, I may not have gotten value for my money. I hope the members here can give some tips on things to look out in the future when buying an LCD TV.

Congratulate smile.gif This is one of my target LCD also during check-up, due to no stock, only left display set, finally I choose Samsung LA40C530 as I find it more nice color for me and support variety media format include .MKV (I don't own any standalone Media Player at the moment) ... I get quota both at RM 1800, hehe...

Questions

1. There is a service USB port on the TV. Does anyone have any software that can access the TV USB port? I am just curious what tweaking or extra things that can be done with the USB? A picture of it can be seen in the datasheet. It mention for services personnel only, "* Usually do not connect anything to this terminal as it is reserved only for service personnel." I doubt it did nothing, it is mainly for services only.

2. What does it mean when it states the following for this TV?
a. HD-ready / HD-ready 1080p: yes/yes
b.  HDTV / HDTV 1080p: no/no
The above info taken from this tv specs.
Ignore the TV specs you get from that link, it is list for "MIDDLE EAST & AFRICA" and it is kinda confusing. Your TV is True HD and support up to resolution of 1080P (P= Progressive). This model is True HD, I had no idea why the sheet said it is not a HDTV

Probably the source movie issue, try others 1080P / 720P format video which support by your Asus o’play r3 media player

4.  Under the TV specifications, it says HDMI input at 1080I/60Hz. What does this means? I was told if the frequency is less than 100 Hz, high action scene such as sports show up as blurry. Will this affect movie performance also? This TV is not a 100hz / 200 hz set, it is up to 60hz only. Higher hz may given better motion flow but some find it look fake. You won't get any 100hz / 200hz TV set at price less than RM2k. I notice your TV is display as 1080i which means it is running at interlace mode, P (Progressive) mode is always the best (but i not means it is bad as human eye not means can differentiate it a lot). But do remember, it might run as interlace if your plugin device (example your Asus media player) support up to 1080i only, 2nd the BD / download movie is not formatted in Progressive mode, and also all broadcast now only up to 720P or 1080i (this include Astro). For the 1080P/24hz wise is the correct format which movie maker record and want us to see in this way. (Basically all new BD player support on it) You need a compatible TV and BD player to run movie in 1080P/24hz. Currently this model is support 1080/24P (1080P in 24hz).

Because LCD is cheap now... LED still slightly pricey and it is not a must + you buy how expensive also same life spending time, you just get slightly better image but that amount is enough for you to get 2 units of LCD TV. You may seen certain shop LCD display is really bad compare with LED, actually it is not, it just a gimmick done. LCD now is similar quality with LED as same panel still in use just the backlight is different. They is no pure LED TV Panel yet, only backlight at the moment.

In my opinion, LED only slightly better on
  • Better Black (Pure Black, similar with Plasma) - I am ok with this since I watch movie in bright room..so I see the black still pure black.
  • More Vivid Color - LCD is vivid enough, sometimes LED backlight is over vivid.
  • More Power Energy - this the only good point.
------------------------------

For 8ft distance, I think 46 inch is far than enough, at least it still reasonable price, the 52 inch only extra 6 inch but it cost you extra RM 4.5k which not worth for me.

i only recently realise one of the most important ingredient of a good picture is the color black. And the best black is usually plasma with LED approaching or as good but at much higher price. But plasma also have cons.

As for color, some like vivid color and some like natural color instead.

For 46", I reckon not more 8/9-ft.

Black is important but not extremely must be pure black.

If your living room is bright, you watch TV with light on, Latest LCD is far enough black already. Not necessary a Plasma or LED for pure black solution.

If you watch TV with light off, then you will seen the screen became slightly grey in dark scenes for LCD.

Which means if you prefer watching TV with no light, the best suite still plasma, LED wise might over bright for you and hurting your eyes.

I have seen these scenario often and never understood why the picture on LCD is lousy. Now I think it's due to to the color 'black'. Correct me if I am wrong.

Imagine a picture with a gentlemen with a DARK suit. And he is standing in front of a VERY DARK table. In other word, while both are DARK, the table is DARKER than the suit. In real life, our human eyes can tell the different between the two darkness but not LCD. This is because while LCD's dark can reach the "DARK" level of the suit, it can not reach the "VERY DARK" level of the table. So when I looked at the picture, the gentleman and the table look like 'joined' together. Now where got gentlemen wearing a table?

Now imagine looking at a picture of a woman with dark hair standing in front of a darker background. LCD have a hard time showing the different level of dark so now you have the woman's hair "joined" to the background. Funny if you ask me.

And mind you, I saw that in lighted showroom. But nowadays, some LCD are starting to have better dark but from what I read, never to the level of Plasma. LED dark can be as good but never better than Plasma. May be even but at far higher price.

Above situation I agree on old LCD, new LCD is ok and you won't get such bad look on above situation, it is not as dark as Plasma (none can fight Plasma pure black yet even LED).

But I can't stand on Plasma, the way it draw the picture is which I can't accept. I know Plasma is perfect in Black & Motion, but the way Plasma generate out the picture is the part I cannot accept it. Last time I thought I am weird, then after discussion with people I know, I just knew I am not the only one cannot accept how Plasma draw a picture.

I not sure how to describe, what I mean is the way Plasma display the image is not my type like, I feel it just a HD quality CRT type TV when I look at Plasma. They are scan line by line (looks like).

When I was comparing the HD Ready P50X and the Full HD P50U, I notice if standing only 3 or 4-ft away, I can see the line by line like you mentioned on the P50X. But not the Full HD P50U.

Of course if you sit further away from the P50X, you wouldn't notice the line.

To me, another vitally important thing to realize is "ambient light". It's simply the surrounding light that you will be using your TV in.

In a brightly lighted retail showroom or house room with lots of sunlight coming in, LCD/LED might be a better choice because they are simply brighter thus better able to compete with the surrounding lights than Plasma. Also, their screen typically have less reflection. On a flip side, they can be too bright and some people would even called it harsh and unbearable to watch especially in dimmer room. Thus in dimmer lighted room, Plasma might be a better choice and far cheaper than LED.

5.
For the pc compatibility chart, it says it can show at 1400*1050(see below). Can it go higher if the pc has a video card which supports higher resolution?

I hope I can get some answer from the experience people on these questions. Since this is my first LCD TV, I may not have gotten value for my money. I hope the members here can give some tips on things to look out in the future when buying an LCD TV.
