I think it'll work, the monster fish should leave the plants on the driftwood alone.
But I'm not so sure about the plan with no ferts. Last time I didn't put ferts, my plants only lasted 2 weeks. But those weren't slow growing plants la.
My advice is that if you really don't want to put fertilizers, then do more water changes. The small amount of minerals and iron added in each water change should be enough to keep them green, I hope...

Added on March 24, 2011, 9:00 pmIf you want cheap and from the list of plants you gave, you can do without ADA soil. Just use some cheap gravel and depend on water column fertilization to keep the plants healthy.

Tie the plants that you listed out on a piece of driftwood and finish. Just put some Yamato Shrimp in after a week or so to control the algae. And buy some liquid fertilizers and start dosing after 1 week to 3 weeks.

Dose according to your tank, what kind of plants can list out? How big the tank? Algae cleaning crew is who?

I dose every 3 days like that, very small dose, half a cap, the round one. My tank 2ft 25 gallon, stem plants and moss.

Can give me picture of your tank??? from what you describe its very small...

The interval you can decide yourself, which is more convenient for you. My intervals are short because I don't want too much fertilizer at once, because if once a week then need to put a lot at once.

Your tank size, unless you can find someway to administer smaller amounts each time. If not, you dose once a week after water changes la.

You using ADA soil???

Use exactly or less then the amount on the instructions, its a bit hard to underdose IME, but very easy to overdose. If the leaves dying off too fast or too much add more fert. If the leaves turn yellow add more ferts. If a lot of algae, you can stop or just dose 1/10 of what you usually dose.

For the sponge thingy, I've only heard of putting crushed lava racks to layer the bottom, make the slope higher and also can save on the ADA soil cause no need to use that much.

Neon tetra very fragile... My tank I keep my RCS and Yamato shrimps, I put in 24 ekor, now left 5 ekor after 2 weeks. If its my tank problem, the RCS should be the one dying first right???

Haiz... I go back the same shop few weeks later, their neon tetra still swiming.

I've only hear of people putting crushed lave rock underground. The rest I think too expensive...

Try Yamato shrimp... But are you sure its diatom??? I had ottos before and they were all I ever needed for algae cleaning...

I don't think those are diatoms, you try rubbing it away with your hands. If cannot, then its not diatom... Cause IME, otto has no problem cleaning diatoms no matter how small the leaves are...

Err... I think your otto gonna die already. IME, they always stop eating algae when they going to die. But it takes weeks even if they stop eating algae.

You check if your otto look very skinny.

Added on April 7, 2011, 6:18 pmI read somewhere that if the Co2 tank reach 200psi, the manual regulator will not be able to manage such a low pressure and might actually discharge whats left of the Co2 in the tank all at one go into the aquarium. People have loss all of their faunas in such way.

But need verification la... I'm also new in Co2 tank, using one but never been refilled before, still got 500psi now.

Your tank got filter??? Doesn't seem like it has.

Get a few Yamato shrimps, the very big ones or they'll be chewed up by your betta. Take the plants out and bleach them, the Yamato shrimps will eat up all the algae after the bleaching.

First, give us a budget, how much your willing to spend???
I can only recommend you to change the lights, you need to change to light bulbs with spectrum of at least 6500Kelvin, the ones you have now are not suitable at all.
Please tell us what kind of light bulbs they are, T5??? You probably need to add some more lights as 20+18w is definitely not enough for a 3 ft tank
