I notice that it's always about what you can get in KL but hardly anything about household needs in Penang. Surely, Penang has a lot of new properties built over last 10 years as the property prices have grown faster than KL or any where else in Malaysia. I would like to see a forum on Penang's renovation, contractors, dining/lounge/bedroom furniture, kitchen cabinets, home appliances and any other household items that we need to purchase for our new homes in Penang. There is no point of reading what we can get in KL. It's too time consuming and yet you get disappointed for not getting the appropriate info to do your renovation in Penang. For those companies from neighbouring towns/cities like Bukit Mertajam, Perai, Ipoh and Taiping, which can provide deliveries of their products to Penang or are willing to to do renovation works in Penang, you are most welcome to talk about what you can offer to residents in Penang.

It's not that hard to find furnitures and all in Penang. The only problem is that they're more expensive than KL and choices are less in general. Not to say that you there's no shops here which offers good deal but you need to survey extra hard to get good deals. Take furniture for example, while Penang furniture is scattered all around, in Puchong you can have 20-30 furniture shops in one area. I've seen some dining tables for eg which cost 999 in Penang but only cost 599-699 in KL. So prices there tend to be more competitive and choices are more than Penang in general. Same goes for Kitchen specialist and lighting shops.
Even ikea is priced competitively compared to Penang furnitures. I wonder how these furniture shops will survive if Ikea opens a branch in Mainland.

Ikea was suppose to open in Komtar, however the move was called off after it receive a lot of oppositions from the locals here. Don't know if this is true sad.gif.

For penang, most things are 2x more expensive compared to KL price.

Really? I guess those furniture shops do know they're not competitive enough in pricing.

There's even a facebook group asking IKea to come penang.

Keep sending enquiries to Ikea on when they are going to open in penang. Acually its in The Star that they made an announcement they are going to open a branch in Penang and Johor.

http://thestar.com.my/news/story.asp?file=...716&sec=happy50

I send enquires about when they are opening every week tongue.gif. Hopefully with enough people doing it, it'll get them to reconsider again.

Thanks for all your valuable feedbacks.
I would suggest that everyone of us should do our parts in sending enquiries to Ikea as recommended by SnoWFisH.
Are there any transport companies in KL which are keen to deliver furniture from KL to Penang. Maybe we should approach these KL transport companies to organise such delivery.
Are there any contractors in Penang who are willing to provide labour to install all these DIY kitchen and bedroom furnitures?

Ikea itself provide transportation service to outstation states. Just inquire at their customer service counter. You can ask the ikea lorry driver to install it for you as well thumbup.gif

Most of Ikea things can be installed by yourself. All you need is a set of screwdrivers and also drill to drive screws for bigger stuff.

Otherwise most contractors in Penang can install it for you. Of course its better that you are there to supervise and read up the installation sheet as most contractors don't do that sweat.gif

Added on December 22, 2010, 8:27 amI have emailed IKEA yesterday regarding its opening in Penang and I have received the following reply from IKEA:-

THank you for your mail. With regards to your enquiry, there are no plans at this point of time for another IKEA store. THank you.

Best Regards,
Aruna
IKEA Damansara,
No 2, Jalan PJU 7/2,
Mutiara Damansara,
47800 Petaling Jaya,
Selangor DE
Telephone: 603 7726 7777
We should however keep on sending email to enquire on weekly basis as recommended by SnoWFisH.

I have also enquired about IKEA's in-home service for Penang residents yesterday and I received the following reply:-

I'm Shirley. Yes we provide assembly service in Penang. We will charge extra transport charges RM800. For installation fee we charge 80.00/metre. (Length). Hood, Hob, Oven each we charge RM80.00. For sink installation we charge RM160.00 (For outstation no warranty provided) For delivery charges you have to refer to Ikea Home Delivery.

Any queries, call our office 03-77269954/8954.

Regards!
Thank you.

CT ART DESIGNS SDN BHD

I think $800 for transport charge is too high. Do IKEA's staff travel by limo service from KL to Penang. Even if they hire a car to travel to Penang, it should not be more than $400!

I asked and they quoted me 690. It's only worth it if you can pool 3-4 houses with other people worth of ikea stuff.

I was looking through my notebook on Mattresses. Has anyone got any feedbacks on usage, pricing and the furniture shops in Penang selling of the following mattresses:-
Dunlopillo, Getha, Kingcoil, Goodnite, Slumberland, Simmons and Dreamland?
So far, I have not seen any one talking about Dreamland mattresses, which used to be one of the best in the market.
When I viewed rclxub.gif the website of Goodnite, I found the following list on the furniture shops in Penang and neighbouring towns selling its mattresses:-

I have recently received more addresses of dealers / agents selling FOTILE products in neighbouring towns of Penang. These are:-

Megaria Home Gallery Sdn Bhd
53 & 55, Jln Prai Jaya 3,
Bandar Prai Jaya,
13600 Butterworth, P.Wellesley.
04-3976628
(Branch at Bukit Mertajam available)

Chop Seng Hock Electrical Sdn Bhd
9, 11, 11A, 15, Jalan Merbau Indah,
Taman Merbau Indah, Sungai Dua,
13800 Butterworth, Penang.
04-3569999

Please do share your experience here when u have bought from the above dealers. As for installation, these dealers should be able to recommend contractors to do it.

I've bought 2 times from Megaria. Both purchases were for Fotile Hobs and Hoods. Not because it is faulty, but moved house twice. Service was good both in Butterworth and Penang.

U cant get the shop like "Ikea" in Penang.
At Island, most of them are chain store.
At Prai, lots of small & medium size shops.

A review for Megaria Penang (D'Piazza).
There is a lady working there, who has been around for a year I think, and still clueless about the products they are selling. But that doesn't stop her from spouting nonsense when talking to you.
I was so exasperated talking to her and looked to the boss for better explanation but he was busy sitting at the counter.
Thumbs down for D'Piazza Megaria.

I would recommended Jungle Bath in Green Lane (just opposite CGL, next to a Johnson Suisse showhouse).
Excellent service and very good discount. Closed on Sunday.

agree, jungle bath provides good service and discount, example for sorento product they directly give 30% discount (not sure about other brand) but the sorento product they display not so much compare to Hong Keong Hardware (opposite I-Avenue) which offer only 20% discount.

There is another one called My Home Life at crystal point, they are selling slightly lower budget items but some of their items are really good and cheaper because the brand not as popular.

just did a small renovation for my house lately. taking a few days resting at home and surfing to release my fatigue of been hard working sourcing around for household stuff.

bump into this forum and pleased to see someone is initiating for Penang people in collecting info relating to household matters. I don't have much good things to share with as my house renovation was almost all done by my uncle who is a contractor for a local developer. But I did make some surveys on the bathroom stuff, kitchen appliances and mattress. You can't go wrong any if you patronise the shops below to get your stuff, am talking about the good price and good service (forget the poor service attitude - the mattress shop, although they could offer competitive price).

I got my things from
1) Builders Hardware @ KL - hood, hob and oven
2) Wasser Werkz @ Greenlane opposite the Lam Wah Ee's old folks home, Pg - wc, basin, tap/mixer, shower sets & kitchen sink
3) Hup Seng @ Jln Perak opposite Shell station, Pg - lighting, LED etc.

Hope the above is useful to you and does help.

p/s: if u are a typical penangite, u should know the area that I mentioned above. PM me if u want the contact.
