hi all,

wanted some advise on the situation i am in now.

currently attending interviews for the 2 positions below.

1. Drilling Engineer for a new drilling contractor/consultancy. Finding more about the jobscope, I would be doing more of conceptual design, planning, liaising with suppliers, meetings etc and not much of a chance to go offshore. Currently they are expanding (as with many OnG companies). Drilling has always been the place I wanted to go to ($$) but not too sure about the size of the company, would it affect my career? They are pretty small just established 2-3 years ago. I went through their fleet and realised most of it is for shallow water drilling, certainly not Transocean-esque depths. However, I understand that this is a golden opportunity for someone fresh to get into the drilling business...maybe can get into it first then switch to deeper water drilling?

2. Product Design Engineer in F** Technologies. Initial few years (2 or 3) would be more of design work and not much chances to go offshore. Better side is that it is an MNC considered the leader in the subsea engineering field. Heard from someone currently in the OnG industry that subsea engineers get paid a lot with enough experience as well. Wats the prospect in the design field? Which sectors within the subsea business (eg field development etc) has most potential for growth?

Just curious about the salaries that an experienced drilling engineer vs subsea engineer would get? Aware that the industry is moving more towards subsea and deeper waters...

I have not gotten the offers yet, currently in second round for both jobs.. but intend to leave this topic here for some time for sufficient gathering of opinions.

Experienced Bros out there.. Please advise! Thanks! smile.gif

u're very lucky bro...ask them to call me for interview for the position that u'll turn down...

lol. I guess so. I have been trying hard over the past year or so..currently in a technical field that pays rather ok but I still see the future for technical careers in the petroleum industry. Prefer to let natural resources do the work for me tongue.gif

I heard they are not recruiting for this program anymore..but it sound interesting...did you called for interview?
*
Hmm I don't know for sure, if Google it, it is still open for applications. I tried sending them email but no replies from them. I am interested in this programme. But looks like it is not easy to get in.

How about Maersk Trainee Driller Programme? Anyone here hired under the programme or has went for the interviews? Applied for it but no news from them yet. It looks good as well...

Thanks Bros!!

Bros what about SLB IPM? IPM = Integrated Project Management..

I originally applied for Field Engineer position but they ended up planning to interview me for IMP.

Anyone knows about this IPM thingy? I checked th website, it sounds prestigious but not sure if its just marketing. I also cannot seem to find much information regarding the training, working lifestyle and salaries WITHIN IPM.

Thanks!

Hi,

Got a job with a singapore yard, will be working on their drilling systems in the engineering dept. Performing calculations, attending FATs, involved in some production/commissioning, and liaising with classification societies. Mostly working on jackup rigs and semi-submersibles. Looks like I won't be working on drillships though. Maybe u guys can guess which yard i am in smile.gif

I looked around for positions requiring these expertises, but cant find any on this forum and likewise pages on the web. The closest would be a drilling package engineer but even that these positions are few and far in between.

Asking people familiar with this industry, how would a career for a person with this type of profile most likely be in the future? Currently thinking of slogging for 3/5 yrs at the yard then try to work for the rig owners (seadrill, transocean etc)

Any kind gurus willing to share their knowledge, please feel free to do so here or can even PM me.

A million thanks!! smile.gif smile.gif

Rox18,

I think it is a good exposure and knowledge since most of the rig equipments(top drive, drawworks, drilling console,BOP, etc) are doing same function regardless of type of the rig..even more you are working with the semisub which means you also learn about the subsea equipments and also the tensioners n compensators..

When you already 'master' with those knowledge I think you can jump to drilling contractors company (transocean, seadrill, ensco, mearsk etc) either as a project engineer, comm eng, ops eng, or even working onboard myb as a Drilling Equipment Eng, Subsea Eng or Electronic Technician(dealing with electronic stuff)..

Just my humble opinion...

Hi meonkutu11,

Thanks for your advise. How often is it for engineers in the yard to jump over to the drilling contractor side? I heard they pay there is absolutely fantabulous, and less stressful compared to the yard. I was advised to specialise on something, and gain experience in that particular area of the rigbuilding...how does it go from here?

Thanks

Hi guys. I've got some questions about Shell's employment scheme.

1) Does Shell recruit graduates all year round?

2) Say I would like to apply for Shell Singapore as a graduate (but I actually have a year of experience in 2 NOCs). What are the chances that they will pass my application over to Shell Malaysia instead? Would applying in Singapore have a lower rate of success?
*
Hi Xerone,

As far as I know for Shell Singapore, they recruit mostly during December to June period, that was for last year. I have a friend inside Shell Singapore. Can try to call them and ask..

One year of working experience is fine..but they only have downstream businesses in Singapore..Bukom plant being the main oil refinery.

Rox18,

Honestly, I do not know how often they jump from shipyard to rig owner company but I believe if you already completed 2 or 3 rigs construction from start until the rigs are delivered, that would be an advantage for you...

I also can't comment about specialization on one thing..I just can you share with you what one of the OIM told me recently..he said "jack up rigs maybe ur career but deepwater rigs are the future"....so what I can think about it are the subsea equipments and also the other equipments/systems...

Sorry can't help you much, maybe others can with some more lights...

Thanks..

Hi meonkutu11,

Haha, I know what he means..thats why I hope to work on deepwater drillships once I have the experience..since drilling systems on jack up, semisub, drillship share many similarities. smile.gif

I've got an copy of an article from SPE, which gives a summary of Indonesia deepwater field development technical, contracting and execution challenges, written by people from Chevron Corporation. It's a very interesting article about the factor of considerations major O&G operators take into account when during the field development stage.

It's a paid article so if anyone is interested I'll post it up here when i got home. Don't wanna do this from working PC.

Cheers.

I would like to have a copy as well. SPE articles have some real gems in them. Thanks a lot!! smile.gif
