Just some questions regarding to O&G field.. do I really need to take mechanical engineering in order to get accepted to this field easier? Or just any engineering course would be fine cause all the engineer studied the same basic?
My friend's father studied aircraft engineering last time but end up as O&G engineer now. He said that no matter what course you choose, when you work you start fresh. So it doesn't really matter cause all engineer studied the same basic. How true is this statement?

QUOTE(ben3003 @ Dec 16 2011, 12:23 AM) Hmm, depends on what kind of OnG company u wanna join.. normally for those servicing and maintenance company in Miri like Petra, SapuraCrest, they welcome any Engineering degree to join them as Technical Assistant. Or like now, i joined ECS Shell as Graduate Engineer, which is basically kinda adminstrative job, so they would take in any Engineering degree graduate, this position is more like they pay u to learn" position, where you can learn things offshore, i am under commissioning. The job is probably more like project management later on in higher level. If u wan do specialization, like process engineer, then chemical is way to go. If piping, mechanical or chemical. It would be better to study mechanical if u are interested.. Cos it is an all-rounder subject, i think mechanical engineering is applicable to 60-80% of the job market. I haven't decide on which engineering course to study so I am going to do foundation in engineering first. But really, I'm not really into mechanical engineering at all..

Really thanks for replying again. So the info I am getting here is that in O&G industry, more mechanical and chemical engineer is needed rather than other type of engineer?

Are there any main engineering course that branch out to jobs you listed?

So I assume that most of you all studied mechanical engineering/petroleum engineering or other oil related engineering course before coming into o&g industry? *other than ben*

QUOTE(positive energy @ Dec 17 2011, 11:50 AM) actually Petronas did offer scholarship/LOAN to SPM holder with extremely good results to study foundations in UTP. but if u got category one permit ( money), u can study at other foreign uni like nottingham, Herriot Watt Uni which may polish up ur resume. Which uni u come from with first class is only able to secure u an interview, the rest u need other FACTORS such as NETWORKING, PERSONALITY, to be able to secure u a job in OnG. Personal Experience. NETWORKING is freaking important in a small OnG community. Ppl used to know each others. The term extremely good results killed me hahaha. Anyway, money is really a factor here so I guess I have to no choice but to study at other cheaper college (nottingham will cause a bomb). So in that case, where to build up networking ?

One question guys... does an external UK degree affect my ong career? Is it better to have a local cert or an external UK cert?

QUOTE(ICDeadPeople @ Jan 30 2012, 11:04 AM) For fresh grad, I only look at 4-5 local uni for geoscience. For RE/PE, around 2. For other discipline, never call anyone for interview yet. Foreign cert can help, especially when it comes for a well known uni (Heriot Watt, Col School of mines, etc). But the results is more important. I always ask potential candidates to submit their full transcript to see if they are excel in the right and important subjects, not like gym class, or theater, or whatever. But I always wonder, does IT or HR or procument/accountant in ONG pays substantially higher than other industry? Anyone can comment? Since I thought the subsurface and some critical surface discipline (drillers, FE) paid really well because of limited resource. I see.. so the cert is really important to be called up for interview? Cause before this i planned to go HELP because they got university of herfortshire cert but then I heard that MMU is more well known for their engineering. A bit stumbled across this two.

QUOTE(ch_teo @ Jan 30 2012, 11:37 PM) clon12 it is important only when one wanna join consultant for the accreditation direct admission into graduate member in malaysia. some consultants' job advertisement requests for registered with BEM/IEM Accreditation. pls take note with BEM registration one can go further with Washington Accord.was 2nd batch ME same as u. opt mmu last time due the accreditation (Uniten not accredited, went to UTP interview [still new the campus that time, some comments from friend's elder sister] & some colleges in my consideration list were not accredited last time except public uni which due to quota, so never dream of that), 1st batch & our 2nd batch were interviewed by EAC interviewers during their assessment/evaluation last time in campus. So in your opinion, whether it is an external cert or local one doesnt matter in enrolling into ong industry? I am aware of the accrediation... But from what my gf's father told me it doesnt matter in ong as you dont need to be an IR.

QUOTE(noruazumi @ Jan 31 2012, 10:07 AM) Local or oversea doesn't really matter much. As long as your cert is from accredited universities, it should be fine. However, there is a "unwritten" policy that they will only consider fresh grads from certain universities. I think if you are a grad from UTP (obviously), UTM & UM, you should be fine. I mention these 3 uni's because my friends/contacts are from these uni's. And UM too, right? How did your contacts went through UTM? SPM>STPM>Degree? QUOTE(ch_teo @ Jan 31 2012, 10:16 AM) it does matter if as consultant especially at refinery (even petronas refinery own team got PE), pls read carefully what word i bolded previously. it depends on which stage from platform fabrication, e&p, refinery until the end products one is using. your gf's father is right if at operator/some contractors side (they will have NDT, API certification, follow ASME, ASTM, etc. specialist certification to inspect/cert at the various stage). it is about teamwork. Tends to lean to an advantage side if the uni i study in is accredited by bem straight right? But as I know as long as you study 4 years, you are qualified to join bem.

QUOTE(positive energy @ Feb 1 2012, 11:21 AM) you want lean to an advantage side? get Petroleum engineering in UTM/UTP and get first class. Some of my friend in PE(UTM) already booked by Schlumberger/Halliburton/Shell/MMC Oil & Gas/Cameron before they graduate during Oil &Gas Career Fair in UTM, Nowadays, Shipping Companies from Singapore also chips in Oil & Gas Career Fair in UTM, making Career fair in UTM more happening. just my 2 cents. I see.. Then i think i should start to apply for utm... QUOTE(hj.pet @ Feb 1 2012, 11:38 AM) actually it depends on what post r u interested in joining coz imo, most service companies hired students with a mechanical eng bground for drilling/completion/production eng post while pet eng bground for res eng post. but then, as long as we have a strong eng qualification from a reputable uni, i dont think there should be any prob for us to get hired rite. anyway, yes the career fair in utm is filled with big oil n gas players n quite happening too. I intend to take mech eng as well... But was opt to take foundation to secure my interest for mech eng...
