Nowadays O&G companies are very choosy. If you are a fresh graduate you will have very slim chance, unless you know someone inside/straight As student/bumi.

Try to find a job in small companies doing engineering works like subcontractors or vendors or service providers.

I started my career at a non O&G construction site. At that time O&G industry was down. Even the experienced O&G personnel had to find job outside the industry. That's when I met my colleague who had worked in the O&G industry.

After the O&G industry picked up again, he got back into the industry and pulled me in. That's more than a decade ago.

Most of the times, platforms are design in modules ( these could be segregated by deck level, weight or may be harzadous area classification (based on equipment/piping). The major reason for designing platforms in this way is to ease fabrication & erection. When the various module are then transported to sea for laying/installation, that’s when the word “hookup” comes in play. Similing means connecting the various module together; piping, electrical cables, structure members etc. To achieve this, “pup piece” which can also be referred to as hookup pieces matching the required piping, electrical, structural members etc

Another instance for hookup is connecting piping to equipment, instrument to piping etc. You should have heard of instrument hookup design/drawings.

As an Electrical Engineer..i will answer based on electrical testing and commissioning.. The electrical acceptance testing and commissioning of electric power systems is essential to the start up of any electrical system for the first time, regardless of its size, type or industry. It is a very special occurrence and poses some unique challenges to electrical personnel. So this commissioning will take place after we install the equipment at plaform. And before we start-up and running the equipment, this commissioning must done first.

hope this answers will help you..

I am amazed by your in depth knowledge for a young engineer.

BV is one of the big 5 Classification society, just like LR, DNV, GL, ABS. Historically all started with classifying marine merchant ships way back in the 19th century. Nowadays they cover oil and gas installations such as FSO, FPSO, fixed and floating platforms.

Joining class society companies is prestigious and well respected everywhere internationally.

Regardless whether it is mechanical or E&E, the level of education is only minimum trade certificate.

I encourage you to try it while you are young and healthy.

Good that you ask this questions. This shows you don't know and willing to learn. Rather than me spoon feeding you, you may treat this as a first assignment to learn more regarding the industry. Start with Google.

Yes, it is a specialist in UPS systems. It is a good company and you can gain good knowledge and experience. The company procedures are very systematic and up to date with respect to compliance with the IEC standards.

Which part of this industry you wish to be involved in future etc. suppy, design, construction, commissioning, production, maintenance etc?

Thought you have joined RWP as Inst Eng?

Hi New Klang,

That is a very good question actually. I havent be thinking which part of oil and gas industry i wish to venture to. As im new to this industry, I am still trying to gauge what each part of this industry offers.

which part of the industry belongs to the main players ?

Don't worry too much about the future. Just enjoy doing your job as good as you can. When the time comes you will know yourself.

Main players are involved from upstream right up to the downstream process. Pay wise, upstream is much better.

Now talking about the types of company, high on top are the operating companies, SHELL, Petronas, Exxonmobil, ARAMCO, BP who owns the license for the oil field, does the exploration and subsequently award contracts to service companies like Schlumeurger, Baker Hughes and EPC companies such as Technip, Aker Solutions, Foster Wheeler and so on. Then at the bottom of the food chain are the suppliers like Cooper Cameron for valves, Emerson for their instrumentations, logistic companies, skid package companies, and so on. Now pay wise, operating and service company pays the most.

But in order to pick up technical knowledge about the industry, it is best to start off your career downstream and then move on upwards to the operating companies right? Since you would be exposed to far more technical issues (parts, machines, processes) than if you were to start off directly with the operators ?
*
There are no best starting point due to limited job vacancies for fresh engineers.

You can start with "Mile wide, inch deep" or "Inch wide, mile deep" jobs.

I suppose each category has its advantages.

What about you ? How did you start, if you don't mind me asking ?
*
I started with mile wide, inch deep not by choice but that was the only job available in the oil and gas consultant.
