as i posted before,
mwd tools are basically installed as the bha at the drill bit. it measures either azimuth or inclination of the drilled well or the mechanics information such as drill bit rpm, temp, wob, etc
where azimuth or inclination can be measured using installed gyroscope at the bha (bottomhole assembly at the drill bit)
yeah heriot watt is one of the best pet eng school available. but then, if u wanna go for the best available pet eng school, try united states universities such as csm, texas a&m, stanford uni, uni of texas at austin coz these universities are known worldwide for their pet eng program.
Gyro while drilling (GWD) is used when we are drilling with magnetic interference where ordinary MWD tools cannot give an accurate azimuth reading. Magnetic interference simply means you are drilling near any existing wells or "fish" in hole.Added on February 1, 2012, 11:26 pm
