Why is it so hard to find a suitable Accounting exec / Senior nowadays? I see there's a lot of graduates from Universities everywhere but I wonder where they go? do they all join big four and stay there for as long as they can remember? big four firms can't be accomodating so many employees right?

They go join Big 4.

Good ones leave after a while and go to corporate/finance/etc.

Some choose to stay loyal to Big 4 and stay there until Kingdom come.

Lousy one quit within 1 year due to stress and go work for small small companies or do something completely unrelated.

So yeah, good and average ones are mostly all taken.

I am looking for an opportunity to join Advisory firm too happy.gif EY passed my resume for higher ups to check after the phone interview and now i am waiting for the result. I rejected PWC (i regretted that decision until now) because i have accepted a job in a small firm which ended up ditching me unprofessionally. KPMG and Delloite advisory no open position so didnt apply sad.gif

Frankly speaking, it's not a good time to join EY now as you will have just missed the cutoff line for annual performance review. Their annual progression or probation is in October every year. So if you join now, you will stay in the same rank for about 18 months before progressing/ promoting to the next rank. Other big 4s have two performance reviews per year so you don't have to wait for too long if you are good enough to be promoted

But do you know which ass to kiss and how to kiss? And which party to support?

If not, better be damn bloody good in what you do - dont just copy last year's working papers. Read and write well. Have a sound technical mind - all these always make a lasting impression .... kissing ass, you can only kiss an ass at a time and you are kissing an ass .... ass not good at promoting people

You need to kiss ass and start playing the politic games if you want to have good performance appraisal every time  tongue.gif

What are the job title progression for a typical auditor? I think its something like:

Audit associate
Senior 1
Senior 2
Senior 3
Manager
Partner

Can someone confirm this and would appreciate if you could include the years working there required to attain the titles (with salary scale if possible)..

I'm a recent graduate. Considering all career paths that's why I asked about the career progression as an auditor. Read several sites and some seems to categorize the titles differently that's why I asked here to confirm..and of course to find out the typical length of time it takes to achieve each level plus information on the remunerations as well.

Every firm has it's own title and progression pathway.

Same goes with remuneration.

If you are an average joe, will take your approximately 3~5 years / maybe even more to make AM.

If you are someone awesome, there are people who manage to make senior within 1,5 years or so.

It's all on you. As for remuneration, those information are available quite easily over the internet.

I have at least 3 years experience and 1 year experience in commercial. Now I working in a Public Listed Co as Accountant, job grade M1, assistant manager. I am also qualified MIA member and ACCA member. I manage 8 staff team in my finance department and involve in the various corporate activities such as acquisition decision making, and one of authorised person for sales invoice, purchase requisition, and payment, bursa announcement. I had enjoyed and learn a lot although my finance department is small compared to other listed company.

During the 6 months in commercial line, I feel want to switch back from commercial to practice is just because of I like the challenging environment in assurance line especially I want to exposure in the big 4 audit engagement and continue in the practice line as my long term career. if there is opportunity for me, I also would like to obtain practice license in future. This is the motive for me to move back to audit line. But my main constraint is my age, financial variability, commitments.

I am confusing now . According to HR, where I will be join as a associate, further more I need suffer a 40% pay cut, discounted my experience from 3 years to 1 year substantially and work as a associate until next July 2016 only can entitled for staff review. The pay cut is not my main concern but is totally unfair to me to be a associate for 1.5 years in PwC even I work hard. It made me no motivation for me and it make me hard to justify for my decision or joining PwC.

Actually I shouldn't be have any issue to hold a senior position in PwC and carry out any audit assignment even I being assign to lead a listed Co audit team. From my point of view, PwC recruited me for a entry level position is just waste of resource. A associate's responsibility and difficulty is much more lower than a senior position. I don't mind to work directly with a young manager or work independently, but what if I work with a team that lead by a young senior, which the senior normally only have 2 years of audit experiences.( From my understanding, a fresh graduate only need 2 years experiences in order to become a senior). My brother who work for 3 years in PwC, who told me the audit work in PwC is not much differences compared to other medium firm. There is no point to go backward to restart my career as associate.

Hereby, I would like to seek for the vulnerable career advice from you which can help to plan my career path.

Do you really waNt to join audit? Had your interview? If no, hopefully a partner is the one interviewing you. You can ask for an aCcelerated promotion if you can demonstrate a strong grasp of the audit methodology.

Ive had some colleagues last time who joined from a mid firm.. downgraded to associate and move up to senior within 6 months.

So yea.. once you join, show your ability and ask to be on the big jobs and get a strong sm to support you.
