hey guys i live in a double story terrace house and i was wondering if i subscribe to unifi, can my modem+router be placed upstairs?
the pictures i see on the first page of this thread seems like the modem+router are placed downstairs of the house..
i have a telephone line outlet upstairs and downstairs too.
i would prefer it if my modem+router is upstairs instead of downstiars..
so the question is, can the modem+router be placed upstairs instead of downstairs?
all replies appreciated smile.gif

i've got a question..
for example, if i subscribe to the VIP5 package and i finished up my 60GB download limit, there will be a throttle on my download speed right?

the question is, how long will the speed be throttled for? is it until the rest of the month? if it is, then is it 24/7 throttled until the end of the month?

i'm thinking of getting unifi VIP10 but i'm not sure if i should get it now because of the free installation,
or if i should get it next year around january when the FUP is revised..

opinions please?

Yes, you can either use the Belkin in WAP mode or the DIR615 in bridge mode to the Belkin. You can also get a Microtik switch/router if you wish. Refer to http://unifi.athena.my/ for more info.
i HAVE TO use the dir615 anyway? does that mean i cant replace it with my belkin router?

Not necessary, there are several ways you may consider, depends on your requirement/budget/setup :

1. Configure the DIR-615 as bridge mode, then you can use any WAN router, just setup PPPoE (like Streamyx).  IPTV can still be watch through the DIR-615.
Please refer to Riz's guide at: http://unifi.athena.my/custom_routers.html

2. Get a MikroTik RB250GS to handle the vlan tagging for both internet & IPTV, then you can keep that DIR-615 as spare.  You can use your own WAN router, just setup PPPoE (like Streamyx) and connect to RB250GS.
You may refer to Riz's guide at:  http://unifi.athena.my/mikrotik_rb250gs.html  or  http://klseet.com/index.php?option=com_con...e&id=6&Itemid=4

3. If you are advance user and require more complex setup, then you can consider 2-in-1 vlan+full fledge router MikroTik RB750 or RB750G (Gigabit).
You may refer to: http://klseet.com/index.php?option=com_con...e&id=5&Itemid=5
Please note RB750/750G does not has WiFi, so you may need to setup a WiFi AP

4. TP-Link TL-WR841N ver7 - a complete 3-in-1 vlan+router+WiFi total replacement for DIR-615 !
Check out there: http://klseet.com/index.php?option=com_con...e&id=7&Itemid=6
Eventhough TP-Link has not official release the custom UniFi firmware, the latest beta firmware I've tested is working, few others also installed no problem!

For your current Belkin wifi router, you may consider option 1, for other choices, your decision!
but what if i'm not using IPTV at all? can i just replace the DIR615 with my belkin router?

Standard UniFi uses vlan tagging for:
vlan.400 - VOIP (by BTU)
vlan.500 - internet (by DIR-615)
vlan.600 - IPTV (by DIR-615)

Whether you require IPTV or not, you need to have a router which can handle vlan, at least vlan.500 internet.
The fact is those normal retail routers in the market do not offer vlan tagging feature, include your current Belkin.

So, you need to find a router which allow you to create vlan.500 for internet, got that? icon_rolleyes.gif

yes sir biggrin.gif

I pay around RM130 (including phone rental, tax, etc) for 1MB Streamyx ONLY.

I pay around RM150 UniFi I get:
- 5MB down/upload
- Additional 8MB IPTV
- A dect phone with new number call any Telekom fixed-line nationwide FREE

The lousy DIR-615 already got alternatives, what's your concerns ?
has the download cap thing been activated yet? hmm.gif

why not  go use home plug?? i using now...i jus turn off the crappy wifi function
*
just a question as i am fairly new to this homeplug thing..
is it usable with just any plug in the whole house?
and also, does it affect the performance of the bandwidth/internet?
one more last question.. lets say the unifi personnel installed my modem and router upstairs, can i use homeplug to connect the IPTV downstairs?

hey guys, need some help here..
i'm gonna get unifi really soon but before i head over to tmpoint next week, i just wanna get some answers from you guys biggrin.gif

here's the thing.
i have two phone lines in my home (don't ask why)
one is for downstairs, another is for upstairs.
the downstairs number is just a regular phone line
whereas the upstairs line is the one that's subscribed to streamyx 2mb.

my plan is to terminate and unsubscribe to the upstairs line.
then using the downstairs line number to subscribe to unifi VIP10..

do you guys think it's a good idea?

i wanna keep the downstairs line because most of my relatives and friends know that number and it would be troublesome to notify them about the new number..

and also, i prefer my modem and router to be placed upstairs where all the computers in my house are, but i also want the IPTV thing to be placed downstairs, where the TV is..

is it possible to have the modem and router to be placed upstairs but the IPTV to be placed downstairs?

thanks in advance smile.gif

nope you won't be able to maintain that number for your UNIFI line.

they will give you a new number.

heck, even if you have NO phone lines at all, you can still install UNIFI if your area is under coverage.
QUOTE(vergas @ Jan 4 2011, 07:54 PM)
You can terminate both line as unifi will give you a new number. Unless you really need to maintain that number and willing to pay the normal line rent to keep it.

Yes, get the homeplug for the IPTV.
alright thanks for the replies smile.gif

btw approximately how much will a homeplug cost me?

hey guys, i will be getting my unifi soon and i see lots of people trying to replace their DIR615's with some other brand of routers..

i have a belkin surf and i want to use it to connect to the internet instead of having to use the DIR615's (from what i heard) lousy connection.

i've been reading klseet's website and i'm just wondering if is it a MUST to get the microtik RB250GS in order to use my own router? or can i just do some kind of bridging setting with the DIR615 to connecto to my router

@rizvanrp

referring to your guide here,
the #20 step
QUOTE
Once this is all done, enter your Unifi username and password into the web user interface of your own router (not the DIR-615). The mode should be Dynamic PPPoE (if you're on Unifi home packages) and it should be setup the same way you would setup your Streamyx/Jaring/Other ADSL connection. If you did everything properly, it will connect fine

of the manual advanced method,

my belkin router has either Dynamic mode OR PPPoE mode only.. so which one is it?
