No more illegal downloads?
By Steven Patrick

The free-and-easy days of illegal downloading of music and movies may soon be over. A new law will enable Internet Service Providers (ISP) to suspend or terminate the Internet accounts of P2P (peer-to-peer) users.

This new law called the ISP Liability act, will be tabled in Parliament next month, according to Recording Industry Association of Malaysia (RIM) chairman Norman Halim.

RIM has been lobbying the Government for an ISP Liability act for the past 5 years as illegal online downloads have been cannibalising the legitimate sales of music, worldwide.

"The act makes the ISPs responsible for curbing online piracy. The ISPs will be fined if they don't take action against illegal downloaders. The ISPs have the technology to track P2P users," said Norman.

However, he said that the fine amount was yet to be determined.

ISPs will send two warning letters to illegal downloaders. Should the downloaders still  persist, the Internet access will be suspended or even terminated.

"Other countries that have such an act, have seen its respective music industries recover. One good example would be South Korea," he said.

they only take action on illegals download.

since blizzard is big n famous company, they will not take action on you.

well, if they terminate ur acc for download original game (if u buy one), maybe u can sue them lol. in which u dont torrent illegally.

How do they determine legal or illegal huh? Once they see SC2 being downloaded on P2P means its illegal to them.

There was already a case where the police invaded a game selling shop and confiscated all the original PS3 games in the shelf thinking that they are pirated games. tongue.gif Think of what will happen if this law was passed.

A friend in Singapore did receive warning letters for downloading illegal software before. Think they probably track by certain products and names and from which source you're getting the stuff.

It does not affect original stuff however. But then, is our ISP good enough to even know if the stuff are original or pirated would be the problem.

i wish pirating can stop in malaysia. seriously dno when will malaysians be educated enough to respect copyrights.

Added on December 1, 2010, 9:11 pmi know it wont happen anytime soon tho, even with this enforced law.....in Switzerland (where i used to live), they dun have really strict rule about it but the community will look down at you and treat you as a thief if you pirate download stuff......so ppl dun do it because it doesnt feel right and will be guilty for doing so.

i admit i do download illegal stuffs here & there....
but ppl will seek alternative(s) to get their fix.or else, will fall behind/slowpoke/laggards etc
imho the best way to beat piracy is thru lower price (tax included) as well as more supporting Acts to enhance acceptance among M'sian users (just like the National Broadband Initiative)
