I took it once, depart from the carpark near ICA building. Ticket office is just outside Lavender MRT. I saw people actually hand carry those big thick blanket in transparent plastic bag, maybe they got good deal in SG so they buy extra.

It was mid night bus, once on highway the aircond was freaking cold. Those people start to take out the blanket to cover themselve  doh.gif I was wearing jacket yet not enough to keep warm. I did not sleep much that night. Reach Penang bridge ~6am.

If possible, I prefer flight.
*
Thanks bro for reply. Which bus company you took? And how much is the price to travel from SG to PG?
I checked AirAsia cheapest flight for end of December from SG to PG 1 way is SGD 114, is the price okay?

May I ask if its okay for us to provide Passport#? And for permanent address, will it be fine if I put my Malaysia home address, or it is better to state a SG address if I want to get a chance for interview?

Thanks rickysim84. Even if I currently work in Malaysia, no harm to put SG address and SG phone number right?
Gonna check my SG phone number roaming charge first before putting my SG number...

because i am from sarawak, and when i come to singapore for job hunt, i spend 2 months staying in singapore. During those 2 months, if i put my sarawak address, there will be no reply from any company, lol. but after i put my cousin's address + singapore num, i got some call.
*
I see, you come SG to look for job after you graduated? Or you resign first before go to SG for job hunt?

QUOTE(Aloong @ Dec 15 2010, 08:07 PM)
On the passport matter, I saw some forumer was saying some company they interview straight away applied Ep for them altho the candidate havent agreed to join. So there's a risk to this. If u decided not to join, but b4 u've replied to them, they immediate assume u wanted (mayb somehow u indicated ur interested)and applied EP for u.

This will giv u lots of prob, when the next job u really wanted apply Ep for u. More on administrative prob, but still prob, depending on how helpful is the first company.
*
Mean its better not to provide passport details when replying via email to job openings? Will this give hiring company reason not to consider me for interview if passport details are not provided?

Thanks.

it depend on where u stay, for example, i am from Sarawak, and it is best for me to put Singapore address for higher chances to get a job. But if u are from west Malaysia, i think Malaysia address should be ok.
*
I'm staying and working in Penang. Do you think it will be too "far" for them to consider me?
Or should I put Penang address instead, at least they do not expect me to attend interview immediately if they are keen on interviewing me.

You mean the answer which best tricks the interviewer into believing that you are valid candidate for the job rather then just telling what you think and want?
*
Frankly reason for me to work in SG is to earn more money. But I don't think this is a good answer, right?

QUOTE(Lester1987 @ Jan 11 2011, 09:37 AM)
say that u are planning to migrate to Singapore because most of ur family members are here already. of course, you need to do some home work like get ur self familiar with a certain area in Singapore so that when the interviewer ask you where you relative stay, you can crap a little about it.
*
Don't think its good to tell this, I'm thinking to tell them "to gain exposure working overseas", will this be good enough?

QUOTE(seantang @ Jan 11 2011, 10:51 PM)
Depends on the hiring manager. Some like to hear rehearsed bs, others want straight shooters. Most interviewers know very well that Malaysians working in Singapore are mainly there because of the exchange rate. Why waste time with fairytales?

The last time I interviewed for a job (internal role though), I answered a variation of this question by saying that the last person doing that job was 2 salary levels above me and therefore the expected promotion was very compelling. I also said another reason was that the hiring manager was very strong politically and was well known in the company to be a fighter. Bosses who are fighters are good when competing with other bosses for promotions, budgets and power.
*
QUOTE(wlcling @ Jan 11 2011, 11:10 PM)
first sugar coat with words like exposure overseas and you would like to take this as a stepping stone for your career in Singapore due to it's economic competitiveness. If its a big company you are applying, use that to your advantage and tickle the interviewers ego by praising how excited you were when you saw the job opening, and having the chance to like join the biggest bank in SG (for instance). Just don't be afraid to hint that the currency rate is a big factor too.

to me, bringing up the currency factor breaks the tension of the interview as that would normally end in a chuckle between both parties when you talk about the oh so obvious reason why people choose singapore. When the situation is less tense, i notice interviewers relax on their questions and assessment, so that's the way you want the interview to proceed.

Just don't be so blank and straight away say Its for the money and laugh alone like a doofus la... play with your words well (even if you don't really mean them)
*
Thanks seantang & wlcling, I know what do to now. smile.gif
Actually I'll be attending interview in KL for an opening in SG. And during phone interview I was asked this question and I tell them "to gain exposure working overseas".

Hi all, I'll be joining you guys soon starting mid of March. I would need some pointer on following questions so I could search for more information online:

1. I'll work at Alexandra Road, need advice on best possible location to stay with budget around $500-550 monthly and shortest possible travel via MRT/Bus
2. What is the best cash rebate debit card or credit card (if my annual salary is less than $40k)?
3. I don't call/sms much, but broadband is a must for me. Should I go for postpaid or prepaid? Then between combined voice+data plan or separate voice and data plan, which is worthier for my case?

Thanks.

for non-PR/Singaporean, the minimum annual salary is SGD$60k rite ?
*
Yes, the norm is S$60k for most banks. But I do recall there was a bank that require foreigner income to be around S$40 or 45k only... but could not recall which bank for now. I'll check all available banks in SG and browse thru their cards section to find a suitable card for me...

I don't think bank got say in such matter coz it's control by Monetary Authority of Singapore, just like Bank Negara in Malaysia.
anyway, do consider citibank, they have a lot of dining discounts, the citibank Manhattan have cashback. DBS also not bad, got discount for lots of small eateries place, but for me, free membership for as long as I stay employ with my current company smile.gif
*
I just found SBC income requirements for foreigner is S$36k, lowest that I see so far...
https://forms.online.standardchartered.com/..._card_form.html

Yes I do see most shops in SG malls have discounts for Citibank cards.
Gonna spend more time surveying around all credit cards in SG and see which suit my usage pattern. If income requirement too high I'll just settle for Debit Card or use my MY issued CC.

QUOTE(seantang @ Jan 23 2011, 12:00 PM)
I recently got the UOB One card. S$30 cash rebate per quarter if you spend a minimum of S$300 per month during that quarter (ie. S$900 total spend ie. approx. 3% rebate). The next rebate tier is S$90 per quarter if you spend a minimum of S$800 per month during the quarter.

I like the fact that it's a straightforward cash rebate (not points) for everything you charge to the card! No need to think about which vendor or whether there's a promotion etc. Btw, all the normal UOB card promotions (ie. discounts at eating places etc) still apply.

Downside is that the rebate works in tiers. So if you happen to keep spending above 300 per month but less than 800, you get no additional rebate above the 30 bucks per quarter.

So I recommend it if you have consistent monthly card spending of around 300 or more than 800. If you're something in between, then 30 bucks rebate a quarter is still 1.25% of 2399 (800+800+799... just miss the 800 per month). 1.25% is still better than most of the other cards.
*
Thanks seantang. Currently I'm using MY issued OCBC Titanium which is the best cash rebate CC for me.
From here http://www.sgrate.com/article-496-Singapor...edit+Cards.html I like Standard Chartered XtraSaver MasterCard debit card, but I think they no longer issue this card now...

Oh ya, I haven not tendered my resignation as I just got my offer letter last Friday evening.
I would like to know, if I need to wait until my EP application is successful & medical checked before tender?

1. You can look at the following area nearby. Travel depends on where you stay. You can always use gothere.sg to check for most efficient route.
    - Queenstown, Redhill, Telok Blangah
*
Thanks bro for the tips, will check out available rooms around these areas then smile.gif
Now waiting for my EP before can start asking around for room rental...

For room rental in SG, can I rent a room for few months then move to another place? I don't think there will be any contract to bond us at least need to rent for 1 year right?

Thanks.

Added on January 24, 2011, 10:54 pmBased on information from IRAS, tax residents refers to those residing in SG for >= 183 days, but is it inclusive of Saturday & Sunday too?

Added on January 24, 2011, 11:10 pmHi all, following are my checklist items for Singapore new comers:

1. Accommodation (room rental ~ S$500-600)
2. Getting Connected (phone and/or broadband)
3. Travel (EZLink)
4. Banking Account

Please help to add on if I missed any. Probably this can be updated at thread first page to ease those who will be joining us in future smile.gif
