when u say savings. if u are talking about extra cash, then keep in SGD, coz SGD is more stable compare to RM. IF talking about fixed deposit. Keep it in RM. Coz Malaysia bank offer around 3.8% interest while Singapore bank only offer around 1.2%.

Thanks bro. smile.gif
How about investments like mutual funds, better to invest in SG or MY?

u enter sg with white card everythin... den once u go epsc to collect ur ep u will give ur white card to them... u no need to exit sg... once u terminate ur ep, ur employer will give u 1 social visit pass letter... dat will be ur embarkation for next time once u got ur ep terminated... hope u will understand wat i say... haha...
*
Let me try to phrase out base on my understanding:
1. I enter SG with whitecard
2. collect my EP, they will take my white card
3. when I want to exit SG, I just use my EP to exit, without showing whitecard and passport?

For room rental in SG, normally we need to pay for 1 month deposit right? So we will need to pay 2x for first month rental?
Also what is the available payment method for room rental? Do they accept credit card?

Wishing everyone here Happy Chinese New Year! smile.gif

Hmm, mean for first month in SG I'll need to bring lotsa cash sweat.gif
So for first month most probably I'll need to pay 2 months rental or 2.5 months rental which includes agent fee? Is it possible for us to avoid paying agent fee if we search for rooms online?

I don't think banks issue credit card facilities to the average flat owner.

Some higher end places are fully managed by real estate agencies who collect rental on behalf of the property owners. In this case, you probably can pay the real estate agency by card. But since you're talking about renting a room... I'd bring lots of cash. You could also ask your employer in SG for a salary advance or a straight out signing or relocation bonus.
*
Thanks SeanTang. Is S$1500 enough for first time moving into SG? Is it most room for rent in SG fully furnished?

Most of the room are fully furnish. It consist of a bed, table, fan and a cupboard.

To avoid agent fee, it is best to search for a room which is not advertise by agent.

With or without agent got it's pros and cons also.

With agent,
-need to pay for agent fee.
-they can guarantee the rental price stays the same for 1 year.
-the house owner and you will be bind to a contract which will protect u from being ask to move out from the room asap.

without agent,
-no need to pay for agent fee.
-the house owner might raise ur rental anytime.
-they can ask u to move out asap.

Thanks Ricky. Then I only need to bring over my cloths, PC, toiletries and most important cash for the first rental payment. smile.gif
Anyway, I prefer to stay with working adults or students, rather than with landlord. Is it easy to find such room in SG? I heard most room for rent need to stay with landlord....

QUOTE(seantang @ Feb 2 2011, 09:28 PM)
No harm bringing more cash. Besides advance rental and rental deposit, real estate agent's commission, you might need to pay deposits for your mobile phone (or you could go prepaid until you get your salary), minimum deposit to open a bank account, taxi rides (since you're not familiar with the public transport and it really isn't that convenient if you need to meet appointments and be somewhere at appointed times) etc. And you never know when you might need to buy things that are not provided by the house owner or your employer.
*
Thanks again Sean. Guess I'll bring around S$2.5k in. Just worry its not that safe carrying huge amount of cash with me sweat.gif

For phone & internet plan, I checked cheapest postpaid plans with broadband for Singtel is S$39/m, Starhub is S$38/m, and M1 is $39/m. May I know if these plans needs to be purchased with subsidized phone package? Can I opt for without bundled phone package and is there any contact on minimum duration I need to use this plan?
Is there better/cheaper phone and/or internet broadband package? Also what is the required information/documents for us to register a postpaid plan?

For banking account, I'm planning to open SCB XtraSaver account (http://www.standardchartered.com.sg/person...s/xtrasaver/en/), I see they do not need any money for account opening and we can get cash rebate from its debit card. Annual fee is S$15. Personally I feel this is the best account for me. But I would need opinions and advice if this is this recommended banking account new comer to SG? Is there any catch for owning this account? Is there better banking account than this (probably with no annual fees)?

And I shouldn't have any problem traveling around SG since I went there few times for travel and holiday. smile.gif

1 month depo, 1st month rent, 1 month agent fee... cash or check

should be enough to move it with bed, cupboard, 1 fan if lucky desk and tv
i used up usd3k when i moved over... dont forget opening acc need sgd1k or was it sgd500
*
Wow thanks for the input bro. Since you used up USD3k for your first move into SG. Guess I'll need to get more info from sifus here to plan on how much money I'll need when moving in.

Hi all, question here. I and a 2 other friends have rented a 3 bedroom HDB, planning to rent out a room. Do you think its better to find an agent or just look for a housemate on our own?
*
I might be interested if:
1. rental is around S$500
2. location is around Queenstown, Commonwealth, Redhill, Tiong Bharu or Telok Blangah

In Malaysia maybe... in Singapore, should be quite okay. You need cash for the deposits etc.. but just use your Malaysian credit card for expenses etc.

Those conditions might not apply to non-citizens/non-PRs. I remember I had to bring a letter from my company's HR so that I can open a salary-crediting account and not have to bank in a minimum opening balance.
*
Thanks again. I'll check with HR which bank they will bank in salary and probably will get them to issue me a letter for account opening.

for scb they have a relationship with my company... therefore no requirements needed for staffs... they also come all the way to the company help setup new accs

Hi all, I got my IPA letter last Friday. They took 4 working days to process it. And followings are what I'll need to do:

1 day:
1. Come to SG for medical check-up, wait 3-4 days to get medical report
2. Submit required documents to HR for processing on the same day. They asked me to provide local SG address, do I need to find a room first before provide them this information? Can I provide a temporally address or the address I'm going to stay moving forward? Can I rent a room with IPA letter?
3. EPSC letter issuance, will I get this letter on the same day after done step 1 and 2?

Wait 3-4 working days for medical report (can I leave SG during this period?):
4. Head to EPSC for finger printing and photo imagining and then pass collection date will be stamped on EPSC letter.

Wait 3-4 working days for EP Card collection (can I leave SG during this period?):
5. Collect EP Card

And once I get EP card, do I still need passport to enter/leave SG? What is the process for EP holder to enter and leave SG? Need to go through any special lane during immigration check point?

PS: is immigration card = white card?

Thanks in advance.

QUOTE(reign226 @ Feb 15 2011, 09:06 AM)
You can rent room usually without producing any documents. Just tell them you already confirmed maybe show them letter from your company or something should be sufficient. IPA is good enough.

By EPSC letter you mean the letter to bring to EPSC? If your company asking you to do all this likely they already have the letter to give you.

I believe you can enter/leave Sg at your leisure.

With EP you can use the Automated Gate via scanning your passport. Very convenient.

Yes to the white card.
*
Thanks reign226.

For EPSC letter, I would like to know difference between EPSC letter and IPA letter. This is my understanding:
ESPC letter = we can use this to commence work with this letter, and this is the letter that allows us to do finger printing and photo imaging
IPA letter = for EP application after medical report is ready. Required for medical check-up.
* correct me if I'm wrong.

As for leaving SG after I done my finger printing and photo imaging, since I need to handover my white card to company HR for them to collect on my behalf. While waiting for 3-4 days for EPSC to prepare my EP card, can I enter/exit SG during this period without white card?

QUOTE(reign226 @ Feb 15 2011, 10:49 AM)
I realize many EP holders don't know this. Next time you want to enter/exit singapore and there is an Automated Clearance Gate lane, just go in, insert your passport into the reader, step into the console for your thumbprint and you can be off your way.
*
QUOTE(alaskanbunny @ Feb 15 2011, 11:33 AM)
yea... can use both side... very easy... sg side faster 2x, a bit narrower but longer in length....
*
QUOTE(crapp0 @ Feb 15 2011, 01:22 PM)
True, i only found out about this from my brother who got the info from the immigration officers since he travels twice a week or more.
*
Does this mean we can use Malaysia issued passport at Singapore immigration automatic gate? And this only applicable for EP holder right?

Can ur HR help u pass the white card to EPSC?
i was told i have to do it myself lasttime?
So effectively u only go to EPSC one time to collect ur EP card?
How bout scanning ur finger print? u have to do that few days b4 collect ur card rite?
*
Actually this will be done by outsource. Base on the instructions given, they could help me to collect my pass on my behalf. I only need to go to EPSC once to do finger printing and take photo... then they will take care of the rest and pass me EP Card when its ready.

Added on February 16, 2011, 2:25 pmHi all, I'm applying for EP using passport number 123, then if I extend my passport now, I'll get a new passport number right? Will this affect my EP application? Is EP card are linked to 1 passport number at a time?

Thanks.

My passport never changed number when I got a new one.

Do you mean when your passport expired and you renew it, you still using same passport number?
As I know we need to update our EP details when we renewed our passport...

For room rental, is it best to search/view room on weekday or weekend? Are those agents working on weekend? I'm thinking to go down to SG during weekend to search and rent a room.

For postpaid + broadband data plan, may I know which telco is the best for Redhill, Queenstown, Commonwealth area?
Can I apply for postpaid plan with passport or EP only? What are documents required to apply broadband?
Also the minimum contract period for postpaid plan is 12 months with phone bundle? If without phone bundle can get cheaper price and no contract right?

Thanks.

I search online and most rooms advertised are common rooms. May I know if common room refers to small room or utility room?

I'm going to change around SGD 1500, will bank give better rate compare to money changer?

Thanks.

Common means normal room. Not master room. Quite big and decent for 1 person actually. May be a bit cramped if sharing two person.

You can check online rates via the bank's website. CNY ketuk season over already, although I believe the rates online is still slightly better currently. Some changers will quote a higher rate if you change a large amount, depends on them. Rates are usually better in Sg compared to JB/Malaysia.
*
Thanks reign226 notworthy.gif

For currency exchange, do you mean I can get better rate if I exchange RM to SGD in Singapore compared to in Malaysia?

No affect.
My EP was applied and approved with number 1234.
However, before I went to Singapore, I renewed my passport and have a new number 7890.
When you go to EPSC to register, they will update it on the spot.
Just bring along your old passport just in case they wish to check, mine was not checked.
*
Thanks crazy25kid. Are you Penang-kia?

In my IPA letter it states passport# 1234, so I'll need to inform them my new passport# when I'm applying for EP Card at EPSC right?
If yes I'll extend my passport before start working in SG. smile.gif

anyone working in SG in IT field? (development)

My experience is a bit short on 2 years and I've sent about 15 application for vacancies in SG via Jobstreet.sg but to no avail a few months ago. (not even a call or email reply sad.gif )

however, in Msia i was able to get a job in a decent amount of time.

My friends working at SG told me that i need "connections" and that my "years of experience" has to have a bigger number in order to stand a chance.

Any advice?
*
I'm not sure about years of experience, but IMO if you have the connections, you'll stand higher chance.

Yup, from Penang.
You just inform them when you are at the counter for registration. laugh.gif laugh.gif
I recommend you to change first if your passport is going to expire as it is easier to renew back in Malaysia.
Using the machine will be faster.
In Singapore, you can only renew at the embassy, not so sure but that is what I read from blogs and is quite a hassle too.
Else you will require a Singpass to update your passport details to link to your EP, if I am not mistaken.

Thanks again crazy25kid. smile.gif

Do you have an absolute amount of saving you're targeting before going back to Msia? The permanent shift back will be the most challenging to every Msian working in Singapore. Targets may have been set but the sequence of events taking shape politically and religiously in Msia aren't helping. And above everything else, money is the root of all evil.

Ironically, when you achieve your total savings target, the devilish in you kicks-in again and again setting a new objective for you unconsciously. Money is never enough.
*
Agreed... my plan now is to work in SG for 2-3 years and save a sum of money then move back to Malaysia. But things might change after 2-3 years... tongue.gif

Anyone here used MaxMobile Prepaid microSIM card (7.2Mbps @ S$32)?
http://www.starhub.com/broadband/onthemove...ileprepaid.html

The validity is 60 days with 2GB + 500MB bonus data plan. Is it 2.5GB for 60 days? Or 2GB/2.5GB daily? Information shown on Starhub website is not clear...

Also for SIM only postpaid plan, there is no contract period right? We can cancel or change plan anytime?
http://www.starhub.com/mobile/priceplans.html

Thanks.
