Lower prices for Internet services?

PETALING JAYA: Competition in the mobile and Internet business is expected to heat up with the entry of YTL Communications Sdn Bhd's Yes service, and some analysts believe that a price war may erupt.

There's a potential (for a price war). With YTL coming into the market, the probability is higher, CLSA Securities Malaysia Sdn Bhd head of research Clare Chin said.

She said the new entrant would also raise competitiveness among telecommunications companies while broadband operators would be worried about their margins.

Expectations surrounding the launch of Yes sent shares in YTL Comms' parent company, YTL Power International Bhd, to their highest level in almost three years in early trade yesterday. The counter ended eight sen, or 3.19%, to RM2.59 but off the intra-day high of RM2.64.

An analyst said the new entrant did not bring in competition automatically. He said telcos would up the ante against each other to woo customers in a saturated market and that was where the competition or price war would kick in.

user posted image

In crowded markets where penetration (of voice) exceeds 100%, it can be difficult for an operator to distinguish itself from its competitors if it can only offer the same services.

To differentiate, it needs to be able to offer something new and different with better value proposition, the analyst said.

While competition is good for the consumer, it is not so for the local telcos which have spent the last few years battling each other in a price war, where consumers ultimately reaped the benefits in terms of low mobile call and SMS rates.

Every player's nightmare would be a price war, as margins would be pushed lower, hurting revenue, an analyst said.

YTL Comms' Yes 4G wireless broadband service would charge customers nine sen for a minute of call, one SMS or 3MB of data.

And that's before our rebates kick in, YTL Comms said in a teaser yesterday.

According to analysts, at nine sen a minute the service could be the cheapest in the market. However, they prefer to await confirmation from YTL on the price.

Sources said YTL would also be throwing in a rebate as high as 30% for its subscribers.

u guys didnt read the fine print : The more you use, the more rebate you'll get. For example, if you hit a threshold of 3GB, the price will drop and if you hit another threshold at 5GB, the price will continue to drop, the source said.

YES is truly a failure. Website down, data price rate is suck. We all thought YTL could really produce some very competitive price and could make their rivals a run for their money. However, 9 sen for 3MB...that is suck. For those who always download movie such as torrent movie...normally one movie is at least 700MB..some can go up to 2GB. In this case, 700MB = RM21 or 2GB = RM60.....come on...I better go to cinema liow lor. Torrent does not need very high bandwidth as it depends on others shared user bandwidth, so normally it will not get fast download. Other provider has better package...which some has 10G and the charges is much lower.

Maybe the SMS and voice are attractive but, the data is really disappointed. Even it mention the more you use, the lower rate..but I doubt it make it clear how's the rebate and it is very not encourageable. Now, website is down..it is a big joke for the launching day.

If they could revise the price to 4 sen per 3MB...then it is different ball game at all. With 9 sen...forget about it.

*
To survive the competition you can't price 1GB more than RM12. That's 1 lesson learnt.

You must not have monthly commitment.
You should not lock your subscribers with contract.

You see...with at 4 sen per 3mb (5GB = RM60), it is at least competitive enough when you compare to Celcom which has 5GB for RM98.
Yeah I agree on those 12 months contract is very annoying but if my usage always over 5GB, then I rather get Celcom
even they have contract. Even i use more than 5GB, i will not be charged more than RM98 but only with lower bandwidth.
With YES, 5GB = RM150 and if use more than that, even more expensive. You need to think deep mathematically...not just blinded with
a few of ATTRACTIVE offers....

i can understand why YTL. pricing

1) to cover their infra costs...RM 2.5b (if this is true)
2) 3 to 5 times faster than other providers, so they pricing it higher (if this is true)
3) to get even more money.. rolleyes.gif

i agree , if you were to compare . compare 3G broadband with 3G broadband only . You want 4G , compare with 4G . Why never compare 3G with Unifi or Streamyx ?

Bro, Celcom 68 only gets you capped at 384kbps which in my opinion way behind competition.

DiGi and Maxis doesn't cap their users speed for their RM68 plans until you hit the limit cap.

So Celcom is also a sucky service.

I don't want to pay RM98 which I don't get to use upto 5GB every month.

finally got the news..
YTL launches converged 4G network
Eva Yeong

KUALA LUMPUR (Nov 19, 2010): YTL Communications Sdn Bhd today launched the world's first fully converged 4G mobile Internet service with voice offering the industry's lowest rates at nine sen a minute, per SMS or per 3MB of data through its pay-as-you-go plan.

The Yes service incorporates fully converged data and voice services, speeds of up to five times faster than 3G, new devices and a unified communication tool. The Yes service was officially launched by Deputy Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin (pix left).

YTL Communications executive chairman Tan Sri Dr Francis Yeoh said: "Every Yes account comes with high-speed Internet access and a mobile phone number, making the convergence of data and voice seamless. Our subscribers will have not only high-speed mobile data access but will also enjoy voice, online chat and SMS services that can be accessed from anywhere in the world, through the Internet."

The Yes plan, which offers nine sen per minute/SMS/3MB is up to three times lower than current prepaid mobile Internet and voice packages, and combines voice, mobile Internet and mobile broadband into an integrated plan so that consumers do not have to pay multiple bills.

YTL Communications chief executive officer Wing K Lee said there is no throttling of data services and there is no wastage as customers are charged only for what they use.

He said there is no contract or lock-in period and there is no expiry for the credits.

Yes also offers up to 30% rebate to power users who consume a high amount of data that reduces the rates to as low as two sen per MB or RM20 per GB.

Yes is also a SIM-less service that comes with a user ID and telephone number that works across all devices, turning any device connected to the Internet into a phone.

During the launch today, YTL Communications and Samsung introduced the first all-4G mobile phone, the Yes Buzz. Other Yes 4G devices include Yes Huddle (4G mobile router), Yes Go (4G USB dongle) and Yes Zoom (4G WiFi router).

At the launch, the Yes 4G covers 65% of the population in Peninsular Malaysia and the company aims to increase the coverage to at least 80% by end- 2011.

Yeoh said that it currently has the licence for only Peninsular Malaysia but will extend the service to Sabah and Sarawak at the right time.

He said Malaysians travelling abroad can also keep in touch with friends and family at home through Yes at local rates without worrying about roaming charges.

He added that it would be giving 300MB of data or 100 minutes of voice calls a month free to every student registered under its Education Partner programme. "I am also pleased to announce that we will be extending the Education Partner programme to all government-sponsored scholars abroad."

Speaking at the launch, Muhyiddin said the service would help the government improve the household broadband penetration which is currently at 54.5%.

"I am confident that we can reach even more households and help establish high quality and affordable broadband network that will reach 95% of the population by 2020," he said.

He added that it is critical for the nation to balance market-friendly environment to drive private investments with maintaining its inclusive policy aims, particularly on affordability of access and quality of service in rural areas.

Why u talking about Clecom 68?? I gave an example of RM98 package and you talked others.
Pls do some homework first la....
That's one of the comparison only....then if Digi and Maxis are good, then go for them.
What I mean is, come to the end of monthly payment.....you need to pay more when you get the same
of data... If you are such a small usage user..then don't bother compare la...go for YES lor.
I'm doing for normal users that downloading huge data...then this talk is useless to you...

I quite agree with u. the yes 4g kind of overpricing for people who download lots of data every month. like myself min I downloaded at least 15 gb and sometime can goes to 30 gb per month. this just by using celcom 98 package. i'm paying lesser but can download more than what yes can offered.

U r quite thick arent u?
4g (or even 3g for the matter) is more for mobile connectivity rather than u torrent and download. Maxis/Digi/Celcom all impose different kind of limits on their data services e.g. maxis charge if u use more than ur quota, digi cap your speed etc

if u r in for the mass download, go for streamyx/unifi shakehead.gif

U totally wrong bro. Mobile connectivity happens in 3G, EDGE, GPRS too. This 4G is more on data, speed & bandwidth. If you talked about voice, SMS, MMS etc...other provider aledi doing it. 4G is to provide us good speed for internet access which theoritically could reach 100Mbps. I agree that other providers have their limit but come to the end, it is the cost for mass download user. Nowaday, not just torrent but also online movie etc which is gaining huge popularity and this involved huge percentage of internet users. If they only target those small usage user, well, it does not make sense. They need to cover all kind of user and currently, the current package is for low usage users.....suck man.

forget it

some facts for /k/ tards

Yes 4G has no call centre no , meaning if ur internet goes down..you will have to just emo to youself , you can't shout.

Its prepaid service , pay as you go , but u gotta top up RM 30 every month else they cancel your service

Its not 4G , some of u may say u can get like HTC Evo from US and use it here. No , 4G in Malaysia is WiMax , in US , its LTE. LTE can deliver speeds up to 100Mbps wherewas 4G in malaysia is well ummm

so yes4g is good if

- you're rich
- you just want all in one cheap combo - u call , u do light surfing (checking e-mail and checking out static HTML pages from 1999 with midi music)
- you just want a backup line and can afford to pay rm 30 to keep it alive !

If you're area is covered, and you call a lot, can use it as spare phone. 9c per minute is cheap. But wait, you have to spend a large sum to get their phone. No go.

forget it

some facts for /k/ tards

They need to cover all kind of user and currently, the current package is for low usage users.....suck man.

have to agree with you....wimax is all about data...it's supposed to be able to compete with ADSL....but somehow YTL have other ideas about it and thinks that they're better off as a mobile communications service provider than a true blue broadband service provider for the masses....

and have you guys noticed that they've been promoting about their service covers 65% of the population? it's because they're only covering 65% of the POPULATION (greater klang valley population is like 7 million and that's already about 30% of the population), not the COUNTRY! therefore believe me this service is so far away from being a nationwide service...
