What do you mean the gyro will still balance the heli like normal?
Did you mean if your heli is tilted 45 degrees then when you let your cyclic stick back to central (without any stick input) the 3-axis gyro will help you to level/balance the heli automatically so that it does not crash? I dont think it will if this is the case, the 3 axis gyro will just level/balance back to the last position from your input IF the heli drifted.
Hehehehe, care to share what 3 axis gyro is that? Walkera?

When you attempt to do inverted hover, don't think that you must do it for the whole battery pack. You should test and get the feel first. For example, start with a few full flips, then the coming one you just try to do a half flip and maintain the heli inverted for 1 or 2 seconds, flips it back. Repeat the same thing and gradually increase the time for inverted.
Remember to go high high every time. I was too confident from the last crash while doing nose in inverted, low half flip but then the heli never flip back and kiss the ground straight away ................
