See if you can enter the service menu and find out how many hours the TV has been used. This can indicate if your TV is really new or a display set.

If it is me, I would return the LCD. They shouldn't break the seal unless necessary. I suspect this unit may be a display unit and they're trying their luck to sell them away to unsuspecting customers.

if it's a brand new there will be a strong smell (some kind of electrical items smell) once you opened the box.

It really depends on how the sealed is. If it's sloppy then probably sealed by the shop. Manufacturers sometimes do rework and we can always know since they will sealed with a bigger/wider tape than the original.

Otherwise check the menu smile.gif

when i bought my TV, i insisted that it must be a brand new unopened set, and i would self collect at the store. as it was only 40", i didn't really need the transport, neither would i want to wait for the delivery guy.

as promised, the unit was completely sealed and opened in front of me, before i acknowledged and took it home. just have to learn from experience i guess, it's not gonna be the last time ur gonna buy a TV or any other item right? smile.gif

Usually, they will open the box in front of you. So, if they send it to your house, they will open it at your house, not at their shop. Same goes to other electrical item..

That is why you need goot start-up capital before starting an electrical shop. Imagine you purchasing a demo unit at a regular price, will you be happy? Currently you're putting yourself at the shop's owner shoe. Try putting yourself in the customer's shoe.

Because I see 100% of the reply is in customer shoe tongue.gif

But reality is those goods that are sold are usually display units...unless you order it or a unique model.
When you go to a neighborhood electrical shop to view HDTV and want a certain model thats on display, chances are, you will be getting that display / demo unit.
If not you, then someone else is gonna get it. Shop owner dun care what you get. If he cares, he no need to do business oledi. He will find some way to dispose of the demo unit to unsuspecting customer.
Even if they are truthful that maybe the last unit they have, the price they discount may not be attractive at all if you have been doing your homework.
Thats life, you dun want it..dun accept it in the first place...like one member insist of waiting at the shop rather than waiting at home...its the best...but that also cannot guarantee its new.
Even so, double tape doesn't mean its a defect part, most manufacturing company do recall or rework back their products. And they never throw away the box just because it oledi has been taped.
Its so easy to peel of tape using hairdryer and replace back the tape to make it look like new.
So far I've worked in the manufacturing plant, only good sold to Japan if need to be rework we will peel of the original tape and make sure customer gets single tape.
Other countries we dun care.
So single or double tape also doesn't mean its a new or demo set.

Probably all ppl will not agree with me...but thats life blush.gif

If it is cheaper than street price for RM800 and the unit itself looks brand new and dust free, I don't see a point of making a big fuss over it. It maybe the shop owner just open it for inspection.

Unsuspecting customers will receive display sets. There's no law that says customers are only to be delivered factory sealed goods. Its a matter of ethical business practice which is a norm now, just like nearly all IT related goods you find at Low Yat or established shops.
If you're a prudent customer, insist on factory sealed goods on delivery or its no deal, simple, better still if COD, decide for yourself on inspection of goods to your hand.
The chances of factory sealed goods will be from big chain stores that have a good reputation. Its your call. You want cheap it comes with untold risk.
Like AllIT or some others, there's a little notice to customers not to open any package as customers won't like opened boxes. Its a welcome and ethical practice. Others businesses should follow this healthy trend.
Like LG TV I have, you can invoke a sub menu that'll tell you how many hours its been in operation. Am not sure if other TV's have this. Anyone can do some homework and read the downloaded manual, then check the set on delivery.

there are some people who don't mind display/demo units - assuming they are priced as such as well.

As usual, as a buyer, you really need to do your homework to protect yourself. Ask all the relevant questions before committing to the purchase and only accept if the seller is willing to comply. If not, then no deal, walk away and find another seller.

It is display set or set which has been taken out for some purpose. Becareful and don't deal with the display set especially for Plasma, LCD and LED.
