I'm in the same situation as you actually. I installed the update without backing up, I didn't lose anything at all.
I'm currently searching for a backup app as well, I'll keep you updated. |

Okay, I just installed application manager from market. Just finish backing up, factory restoring now. I'll tell you if it works.
