For free my list of recommendation would be:
-Avast! Antivirus Free (Lightest on RAM)
-Avira Personal Free (Detection rate high, but may cause False Positives)
-Panda Cloud Antivirus (Light as well, good againts 0-day malwares since its on the cloud)

This is based on results and views from av-comparatives,virusbulletin, wilderssecurity.com.

Internet Security
-Comodo Internet Security Premium (Quite a light IS, feels as fast as my Avast! IS 5) though you need time to let defense+ and the firewall to learn you usage pattern.

for ori windows can consider Windows Security Essentials

just installed, kapersky original key inside my desktop, f***ing many Virus in my desktop
then my system started runnigns low, even benchmark also effected. after uninstall it, working find back.
my last word, AV sucks.

LOL.. u better use MalwareBytesAntiMalware, SuperAntiSpyware, and DrWebCureIt for detecting and removing them.. if you don't want to use a realtime AV/IS.. Kaspersky sure is heavy when I tested it LoL.

The only AV I always return to is Avast! Antivirus Free 5.0 since it doesn't feel like it affect the system at all..Just slowing the boot by about 5-8 secs..

Just used up superantivirus, it didnt help me remove anything

but my laptop oftenly format, i dont like doing recovering partiton

if u worry about 0-day, u shouldn't run ur notebook without UAC.

but UAC.. always mess with my RMClock.. for undervolting my system

I dont think my system can go any lower.. this is the best my system can boot lol.. my CPU and RAM could be the factor? Core2Duo P8600@2.4GHz and 3GB(2GB+1GB) DDR3@1066MHz.. hehe slower than your 3820tg ler..
