so sorry to hear that, 3mins to boot is unacceptable.

you should see faster boot up if you do a clean install of your notebook as suggested by many. use this very good post by gome or NBR

if that's seem too much work, and u are not n00b, try this:

*WARNING* - Not for n00b

1. Download and run as Administrator Autoruns.
- This program allows u to control ALL automated running programs when you computer starts
- You may want to disable Acrobat.com, AcroTray, Adobe SpeedLaunch, Adobe Air, Adobe ARM
- You may wanna disable all Bluetooth stuff such as AtbBtTray, AtherosBtStack (but remember to run it before u start using bluetooth)
- Disable Synatics if you dont want to roll to scroll down
- Disable Acer ePower if u dont use it
- Disable AmIcoSinglun64 (duno what for)
- Disable ArcadeMovieService
- Disable BackupManagerTray
- Disable services such as AtherosSvc
- Disable GREGService
- Disable Updater Service

Heck, you can even disable programs that automatically start if you start IE, etc.

2. remove any antivirus (i use only ThreatFire, but run unsafe program such as keygen from VMWare only)

3. remove Ms Office starter - not sure will help, but i sure remove that when i see it

4. Ya, i remember i remove the Intel RAID things as well, i dont need it

5. Check in bios if you can disable DVD Rom checking when booting? or make HD is first boot device, and do Quick boot.

Here is the catcher, i didn't do what i advised above.

I actually did a fresh install using steps in NBR, but I didn't see much improvement (was using Catalyst 10.8), but my temperature seem increased!

so I Alt-F10 and restore to factory default. I only remove MS Office starter, Acrobat and Intel Raid. The rest all default, didnt even disable ePower, Arcarde non-sense etc.

My boot up speed is 30 seconds from boot to login screen (eyeball checking only). Sorry, I didn't measure after login coz not sure when to stop counting. heck, i didn't even bother changing bios setting coz it is fast enough for me. if i m hardworking enough, i might follow the advised above, at least do a "Autostart - delay" for 32bit process...

Anyone wants to try this? http://www.msfn.org/board/topic/140262-how...a-or-windows-7/

But it did put a note there "Note! DON'T USE OTHER DEFRAGMENTATION PROGRAMS AFTER THE OPTIMIZATION, USE ONLY THE INCLUDED MS TOOL, BECAUSE EVERY TOOL PLACES THE FILES AT A DIFFERENT OFFSET ON YOUR HDD, BECAUSE ALL TOOL THINK THEY KNOW IT BETTER!" - Direct Quote.

meaning only use Windows Disk Defragmenter only..

nice post Eugene! i tested it (after u post this). however, it didnt seem to improve my boot up. still need 30 sec to get to login screen.

for the sport, i remove the login, and tested it again. this time, with many services i make it as "Automated - Delay start". i got 40 seconds from Power button press to getting a Start button... hardisk stop awhile and continue running from time to time, but the system is fully usable with no lag. i suspect the 4 threads CPU can handle multitasking very well.

Use this to measure.. I get 41 sec..5400rpm hdd.. better to remove password from logon as a constant variable.. tongue.gif
*
nice proggie rclxms.gif much more accurate than my eyeball checking, and minus the BIOS, etc, i got 29 seconds!

can't compete with 20 sec boot time from ravi6662 and people with SSD... but it is NOT slow rclxms.gif

Wah... How can u guys achieve such boot times for normal hdd..
*
here is how i do it (i have Acer 3820tg), some may not make sense for u:

1. remove Ms Office starter (i install Ms Office 2007)
2. remove antivirus (i install ThreatFire)
3. remove acrobat reader, acrobat.com, etc (i install acrobat 9 extended without LifeCycle)
4. remove Intel Raid
5. in device manager, disable Webcam (i dont use this)
6. Download Autoruns, run as Administrator, disable the following:
- AmIcoSinglun64
- AthBtTray
- AtherosBtStack
- Acrobat Assistant 8.0
- Adobe Acrobat Speed Launcher
- Adobe ARM
- ArcadeMovieService
- BackupManager Tray
- MDS_Menu
- GREGService
- LMS
- Updater Service
7. Open Device Manager, go to Services, make the following "Automatic (Delayed start)
- AtherosSvc
- Cyberlink RichVideo Service
- Dritek WMI Service
- Inter ® Management & Security App
- NTI IScheduleSvc
8. i also ran the tool post by Eugine91

i now got got under 25 seconds boot time! i probably can get a maximum a few more seconds if i start disabling card reader, devices etc and uninstall non-sense software like Acer Arcade, etc, which i dont use often. it's fast enough for me, and i prefer to have those software there, just in case if i want to use them

if ur guys using the Boot Timer as reckon by Eugine91, u need to run the tool as Administrator.

after a reboot, it tried to clean itself, but it ll fail. u need to run as Administrator "BootTimer.exe /run" to properly clean it. here is how:

1. click Start, type cmd, right click on the cmd.exe, Run as Administrator
2. run "BootTimer.exe /run" from the folder u downloaded it

happy computing!

3820TG is 7200rpm HDD right? Darn, I guess 5400rpm is the bottleneck for A42Jv
*
3820TG is 5400rpm HDD brows.gif but according to review, it's quite fast.

i detected a problem with previous setting; if i set "Dritek WMI Service" as "Delayed start", the Launch Manager will still work, but no more pop up graphics (which is cool and i like). so, i set it back to "Automatic", but i change the following to "Delayed start"

- Acer ePower service
- Diagnostic Policy service
- Program compatibility assistant service
- Raw socket service (Acer VCM) (if u dont use webcam chat, can remove this)
- Threatfire

i suspect the tool introduced by Eugine91 is really helpful, i run it again, my new score:

right click on boottimer.exe, select "Run as Administrator".

follow instructions to reboot notebook.

after a reboot, u will see your boot time.

to remove this tool properly:

0. copy boottimer.exe to c:\
1. click Start, type cmd, right click on the cmd.exe, Run as Administrator
2. type "c:\BootTimer.exe /run" <--- without the double qoute

What do u mean by popup graphics?
Wow, Urs is getting faster again! Do u use avast or any av software?
*
the launch manager will display a transparent icon when i press fn key, say to reduce the volume, it ll display this

user posted image

i m NOT using any AV at all. i stop using them many years ago. i m careful with what i m downloading and installing in my notebook. NEVER has any virus problem in my life. for 'suspicious' programs such as keygen, crack, etc, i only run those in my VMware.

however, i use a behavior AV called ThreatFire, its very lightweight, but not really for novice user...

The boot timer is a bit inconsistent I think...

Do you guys have to click YES to run the boot timer after startup?

Well mine does and depending how fast u click the YES, it affects ur boot time apparently lol...
*
u must have set the "Run this program as an administrator" in the Compatibility tab. make sure it is "uncheck".

to run it as admin, just right click in boottimer.exe and select "Run as administrator".

Yeah, I've heard quite a lot about this HDD~
But how to change the HDD in the laptop? Is it easy? Will there be any incompatibility issues?  cry.gif
*
i heard 7.200RPM HDD is noisy and Seagate Momentus XT draw a little more power from battery, but should not be a bad choice.

if i m upgrading, it should be a SSD, but current SSD is just too small and expensive. ALTHOUGH it's fast, lighter and use less power!!!

no info about 6550, no spec, no benchmark. but rumurs has it that it ll be just a 5650 rebranding with something like 5% increment of performance.

anyway, newer is better! rclxms.gif someone in the forum is getting the 6550, hopefully we ll get to see some benchmark as soon as next week. hmm.gif
