Dunno how they test ler.... the thread in that german forum is waaaaaaaaaaaay too long.

Maybe... guess only... that they could test by focussing on white paper + horizontal + vertical line to check sensitivity kwa.

On good light, I don't think can feel any difference. I shoot a lot at night and the outer AF points on the utterly useless.

My purpose of a prime is to learn the difference between prime and zoom.
I use my camera to snap our travel, kids and house deco.
The other 2 lenses you recommended are expensive?
I seen some scary photos of how it broke apart.
I think one of you shot a photo of it in the garbage bin.
Yes, will visit your Flickr. Thanks.

For your purpose, I reckon the 18-55 IS or the 18-135mm kit lens will be more useful for your stated purpose.

Reason being:

- 50mm lacks versatility for travel purpose. Shoot people (note singular) is ok but for buildings its too tight and you may need to compose by only framing a portion of the building only.

- 50mm is too way too tight to take pics of house deco unless you only wanna shoot small items or live in a huge mansion tongue.gif

- The AF is also too slow.. and hunts badly in low light for kids running around.

However:

The 50mm f1.8 could be useful for portrait shots (of which isolating the background could be useful) if your kid stays still.

Like ComradeZ said, the 50mm f1.8 is a great piece of practice equipment.. for play play and to learn.

The 50mm 1.8 is a good investment..it's affordable and it produces good quality pictures. Only problem is when u don't have a full frame camera.
*
Then again, if one can afford a FF.. he/she should go L or the Sigma rite tongue.gif

@merchant 9

That 50 f/1.8 is sharp wei for the price somemore, i bet it's sharper than kitty lens. Colour produced is surprisingly good and i do not even need to edit it to look good

You can view some of my shots here, all shot with nifty fifty smile.gif Except the last 3.

550D owners can teach how to use these 2 camera functions?
1. Depth of field preview button below the flash button in front of the camera body.
2. How to use the * button and AE lock? What does it do?
ComradeZ,
I did not dare think of upgrading until I found out that the 50mm f1.8 is the cheapest Canon lens.
I have cash to spare for this kind of purchase, nothing fancy. Yes, i do plan to shoot my family and friends only and just feel the difference of prime.
I do not go gig / concert.
Ghost321,
Thank you for helping. Right now, I cannot afford to spend 1k+ on lens. I have other priorities.
I will consider this against the sniper-made-famous 30mm f1.4 if the price is comparable but not now.
If camera lenses buy from overseas, got international warranty?
If not, will it means it becomes grey set in Malaysia?
If anything happens, no warranty coverage?
*
1. Depth of field preview button below the flash button in front of the camera body.

- What you see on the viewfinder is always at the len's biggest aperture. Let's say u use a small aperture like f/16, the dof preview button allows you to preview the dof (duh tongue.gif ) at f/16.

2. How to use the * button and AE lock? What does it do?

Like what it says... it locks the automatic exposure down independent of where you focus it.

Example: If picture come out with white sky.. may consider metering (AE-lock) for the sky and then focus on whatever u wanna focus.

Hi khaiandrew,
1. It is normal to go dark? Ok, then I'm less worried.
2. I still dont quite get it. Any examples to try?
Hi sniper on the roof,
1. If I use a larger aperture like f2.8, will the DOF preview be clearer in the viewfinder? Somehow, I see like no difference.
2. Actually I still dont know what * and AE lock means, sorry. I am a little slow here but dont get terms you wrote like "metering" and "AE lock"

I point my 550D to the bright skies, press *, then re-point to a lowlight area and press the shutter button. The lowlight area will appear as bright as the bright skies I initially pointed to. Is that it?
*
As the other guys have pointed out... whats posted here is the "concise" version. The whole explanation of how metering works etc... can find online. If post here, then will have to post as an e-book. Hahahaha.. of which I'm not qualified to write by far.

We assume you have an understanding of what's Aperture and what's Depth of Field (else read it up lor) for question 1 and how exposure work for question 2.

1) Dof preview.

- Put a coke can or something in front of you, make sure the background is far away... like doing those bokeh shots.
- Go to A-mode, set to f/3.5 look at the viewfinder.... focus on the coke can..... Background should be blur
- Then try set to f/16 or smaller look at viewfinder... focus on the coke can... background should still look blur.

- And then look at viewfinder and press the dof preview (camera will then close the aperture down to the selected size) and do the same thing... everything should be darker (smaller aperture = less light come in) but you should see the background not so blur.

2) AE lock

- This one takes long time to explain... suggest reading up how metering works. Once you understand that, then its easy... AE Lock allows you to lock the auto exposure to anywhere on the frame first and then recompose else where.

- Try to blue sky thing or the dark scene thing posted earlier. That should help by example.

These photos are nice especially when they queue the parents to child face (the first two).
I wonder how they do that.  Anyone have any idea?
Hi goldfries,

Since it is a DOF preview button, thought by pressing it on x aperture, f2.8 for example, and pressing it on f8. I should see some difference?
I will try out the AE lock + * button from the suggested scenario.
Hi sniper in the roof,
Thank you for giving me the DOF preview scenario. I will give it a try to expand my understanding on photography. Metering is the exposure bar where the pin points to the center means it gives me the best exposure according to the camera calculation, is it?
I see, but cannot think of a scenario where this is required.
I'm just like fruitie says GWC so really dont utilize all the functionality of the 550D.
Anyway, thank you for your pointers.

Maybe this will help with the AE Lock explanation

hahaha another way is to use a simple reflector, you can buy a real reflector, or even some cardboard, or make use of the shooting place and look for any surface that might work as reflector.

or if you rajin, can alway PP to make fake bokeh, hahaha

Canon's 18-200 IS vs Sigma 18-200 OS... I dun know if image quality-wise got a lot of difference.
If you intend to go far into photography, better have the 60D as a headstart.
550D is also good start but some people may not like it due to it belonging to "beginner" level.
If you have budget, go ahead with 60D+Canon 18-200 IS
Singapore lenses so cheap these days? I think cheapest in KL is above 8.3k.
This is what I was told when my colleague when with I to purchase my 550D.

Get one then! tongue.gif
One of my new colleagues also wants to berjinak-jinak with photography hobby. Recently we went for company's CSR project and obviously I brought my DSLR along together with my flash. He saw mine and said, "Hey, your setup is the setup I want to get too." laugh.gif
I told him to buy one then, but he scared my setup will be too advanced for him, a beginner. I told him I'm still a beginner, no issue one. biggrin.gif Then he said he is afraid he will be hangat2 tahi ayam and throws this hobby halfway through. I told him it is very unlikely to happen, he might end up buying more stuffs than me because this is a poisonous hobby. laugh.gif
Nowadays he always comes to my workstation to play with my DSLR. laugh.gif

Anyway, my colleague wants to let go his Sigma 28mm f/1.8 macro to me, I'll play with it next Monday. Price? He says don't talk about that first. laugh.gif tongue.gif
