I mean, I MISS MICROB! And Nok is being REALLY slow and cagey with details regarding the new N9. REALLY.
Seriously, some hype would be nice. Hopefully it means that the N9 will come out polished and flawless - but knowing Nokia....

You guys are really making me jealous with all your N900 antics really, and I might just bite the bullet and get myself a second hand N810 for cheap just to get in the Maemo fun lol.

Lol, I lost to my desires (and complete lack of foreseeable resources). So I'm back to Maemo again - albeit Maemo 4 on a cheap second hand N810 lol.
Actually haven't flashed to Mae4 yet, so it's running the extremely clunky OS2008. Also, be thankful for the keyboard on the N900 - I can tell you the N810 one is way, way worse: all flat and extra wide. The huge screen is wonderful tho. This post has been edited by Eiraku: Nov 5 2010, 09:48 PM |

Not really comeback lol, diff Meamo ver ya'all. But I'm gonna try nitdroiding it anyway. Plus USB host is practically stable edi on the Eight-Ten. And about six hours on Bluetooth DUN through the E71's 3G is no joke really. Last time with constant 3G I would be lucky to last 3-4 hours with heavy use on the N900.
Next step, reflash to the latest Diablo ver and back to tweaking heaven I go YEAH! Also, I need to go Nokia Center tomorrow to tighten the slider and other minor stuff tho cause the unit is still under SG warranty, malas to repeat the N900 self repair fiasco all over again. Altho I wonder if going to Nokia MY will void the SG warranty. This post has been edited by Eiraku: Nov 6 2010, 01:16 AM |

For chi input you can also install Emacs and cut and pase into whatever app you need - it's complicated but at least you don't lose the virtual keyboard.
Currently liking Tear over MicroB on the ol' N810. It's far smoother and works much more like the N900's MicroB, for some unknown reason. I mean, Maemo 4's MicroB doesn't even have kinetic scrolling lol. It renders stuff well enough though. Also, it's quite hard to run Leafpad as root - heck, who am I kidding, it's impossible. This is severely limiting my hacking around with the N810. |

Android sucks a bit when it comes to power management. Even now at Froyo, but that's 'nix bases mobile oses for you - compared to a 'proper' implementation of Symbian (which S3 definately isn't). Hopefully Gingerbread settles that issue - and the whole ad-hoc fiasco.
But really, as far as mobile oses go, Maemo is not bad really. It's even running respectably on the puny 400mhz OMAP and 128MB RAM that my N810 has - multitasking and all. A couple more PR updates and the N900 would have been killer stable. Hopefully Nok gets Meego right. BTW, it's actually kinda strange that Nokia did a few things better on the old 810. For one, bluetooth keyboards work flawlessly with minimal tweaking, and the hardware buttons are extremely useful. Other than that, I'm happy to just be able to play with Xterm again, tho a few things are harder on Diablo (Mae4) compared to Fremantle (Mae5). |

@alien: Rather then 'advanced mobile OS', it's more like an 'mobile desktop OS' - hence all the issues lol. Once you use a true-blue NIT you will understand why the N900 is so flawed as a phone, because Maemo wasn't really designed for that.
As a tablet tho, other then a distinct lack of apps and battery life, it's great really. BTW, anyone plan to buy USB host cables online or have spares? I'm itching to poke a few thumbdrives into the N810 just for the heck of it. I wonder if the N8 OTG cable would work on the N900/N810? Can try arr sifu aspire? @everyone: Anybody heading to Lowyat or PJ Digi Mall in the next few days? Wanna ask for help to see the prices of 4-16GB miniSD or microSD cards WITH A MINISD ADAPTOR.
I'm not gonna be in KL until the school hols start so anyone can help? Now suffering for choosing a 2 year old device using an outdated mass memory slot (miniSD). And unlike you guys with huge built-in eMMCs, the 810 only has 2GBs built-in lol. How to download easy debian image or play with nitdroid/ubuntu/mer? QUOTE(super_evil_alien @ Nov 9 2010, 12:53 AM) Trouble is ebiz2u have a very low stock.I've asked him already. Mmmm, female 2 female. Lol, that aside, I think I'll need one of those too soon. And alien bro, do you have spare host/ OTG cables?Anyone who is going to lowyat do PM me also.I want to replace my female 2 female usb converter. @jananan: Yeah it supports microsdhc cards, problem here is finding retail packs of those cards with bundled minisd adaptors. Has anyone seen Sandisk or Kingston 8-16GB cards that come with minisd adaptors these days? Malas to go buy from the net really. And bro, have you tried using a 2.5 ext hdd with an external battery pack using a split usb wire (like the one that comes with older 2.5 inch enclosures. MIGHT work, but I'm not really sure. From somewhere on the net:
QUOTE Nokia #N8's CA-157 also works as USB OTG cable for the aging #N810 - gbraad Taken from: http://identi.ca/notice/57178054 MUAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHA. My searches have borne fruit! Now to score myself some CA-157 cables when the cheaper imitations come in. Either that or a Micro-USB-A to USB cable + female2female adaptor. Hell I didn't notice this when Aspire posted that picture of the N8 port a few pages back. Time to jack some pendrives, USB-VGA adaptors, DACs and other crap onto my NIT - after having figured out how to hack a USB-hub to use an external battery pack for power. Geeks thrive on Linux, and having used it (Ubuntu, Fedora, Slack) for quite a while a few years ago, I can confidently say rhat I would have stayed if not for the lack of mainstream games on any flavour of *nixes (and no, wine is not a 'magic bullet', even after all these years).
And I have to echo what the Engadget guy said about the mobile battlefield now looking like the computer wars of yesteryear (and today still), as it looks like this to me: iOS -> Mac, Android -> Windows 7, Symbian -> Windows XP, Maemo - Slackware Linux. Somehow lol. |

@0300078: Support for XP is ending soon actually, tho I agree with tech companies supporting their firmware better.
Nokia USED to be a good example for the, hell the E71 got firmware updates well into the earlier part of this year, that's three freakin' years - almost an eternity in tech terms. Hopefully they pull Meego off. I'm itching for a "proper" mobile linux implementation (which I refuse to call Android as). This post has been edited by Eiraku: Nov 9 2010, 06:31 PM |

@XiuKeong: Frankly speaking, the maps on Sygic are complete rubbish outside of major towns. Outdated road data, inadaquate POIs. But in town areas it's okay laaa, but still is sad compared to Garmin.
@Shrugs: Run as root and do an "apt-get update" first? Also check if you have the related repos enabled. |

QUOTE(hengguowei @ Nov 10 2010, 08:01 AM) btw, I thought repo in app manager wouldn't affect. or will it? I think it doesn't matter if you enabled it or not so long you have it there. I think his case as you said apt-update will solve. Maemo (of any version) has occasional cases of mysteriously missing repos, for some unknown reason. Usually an apt update solves the issue, but sometimes you have to poke around appman. This post has been edited by Eiraku: Nov 10 2010, 08:47 AM |

Woah, Titan's been busy it seems. Reminds me of the pre-v30 days - there was this one release that completely borked up my N900.
Anyhow, my N810 went nutso this morning out of too much modding, so had to reflash to fresh again. Everything seems fine, tho I'm really missing kinetic browsing in microB - Diablo does not have this - and Tear EATS UP MY CPU CYCLES LIKE CRAZY. Sigh. It's sad there's no Chomium for the N810 and they have stopped building firefox builds for the N810. |

Sigh. I'm gonna get me a girl-on-girl connector and test my 'split- wire-to-external-usb-battery-pack' theory for OTG and external hard disk.
Also, my old buffalo Ministation (the one before the current version) has an external dc in jack. Theoretically, if should work if I jack a usb power pack to that - if I can find the dc jack usb cable lah. I do think our best bet is the second option, but 2.5 hard disks with dc-in jacks just ain't popular any more. Which is a shame really, as the old Ministation is superior to the new one in many ways IMHO. Here's a picture and an Amazon link of the model I'm talking about: ![]() http://www.amazon.co.uk/Buffalo-MiniStatio...l/dp/B00169R53O If anybody finds this old model still being sold anywhere,(any capacity), please do buzz me. I need to get a few more anyway lol. This post has been edited by Eiraku: Nov 12 2010, 11:58 AM |

Agreed on the strong anti-apple sentiments lol. I take a picture of my current setup then baru tahu - my trusty N810 with my trusty Apple Wireless Keyboard. They work great with each other.
Okay now, I'm sorry for sounding like a wet blanket or something, but I need to get one thing straightened out. As far as I know, the N900 ONLY DOES HACKED HOST MODE, NOT OTG. Or am I wrong? Last I checked the only way to get real OTG working is to physically mess with the SOC (ehem, chips inside the N900). Do correct me if I'm wrong. As for why the N8 wire cannot be used on the N900, the N8 has a Micro AB port which accepts both normal Micro-B USB cables for charging and the like, and Micro-A for USB OTG. The N900 comes with a (admittedly flimsy) Micro B port which can only accept type B cables, and NOT the type A adaptor on the N8 OTG cable. I can supposedly use the N8 wire on my N810 tho, wink wink. QUOTE(lightastral @ Nov 12 2010, 09:25 PM) because apple is against of what we feel what is right for all. But they DO make sexy smexy hardware that actually works well - sometimes at least (like my Apple WK, best slab of typable aluminium I know of lol).open source vs closed, controlled, jailed (hence jailbreak)... On the Diablo front, Tear has just been updated to 0.3.6, and it's almost as good as Frementle MicroB now - minus the swirl zoom and well implemented text select. Also tried Fennec and Minefield. One was slow, the other was just wierd to use. Funny that I'm preferring a webkit browser on an NIT lol. Oh well, Meego's gonna be like that too anyway lol. QUOTE(super_evil_alien @ Nov 12 2010, 09:34 PM) You're correct on both part. But even shortening the pins it doesn't always work perfectly. About Micro A & B being similar, yes they are, but it's pertinent to note they are NOT the same. Even on the N810 with hardware enabled OTG, the Micro A cable is more reliable for USB host purposes.Well, for me reading flash drives are more than enough for me.It'll help me in plenty of ways when I'm inside campus. But that doesn't mean I'll stop working on making h-e-n detec my ext-hds Added on November 12, 2010, 9:35 pm Ugh, for some unknown reason I suddenly feel that using an N9 is gonna feel like using the N810 with it's huge screen and gila tiring keyboard. The N900 QWERTY is MILES better to type on. @Jananan: supposedly, but there are many cases of the B cable not working and not detecting the attached USB device, even after manually switching (or using software). Am gonna get a girl-on-girl adapter anyway tho, cause china mali cheap N8 OTG wires are still quite some time away, and A head cables maybe Sri don't have. ACTUALLY: OTG = Automatic switching between client mode and host mode depending on what you poke it into (or what you poke into it). This post has been edited by Eiraku: Nov 12 2010, 10:03 PM |
