hmph. root?
I'm not sure if repo actually make a difference but I don't think so in xterm. just try again. I got mine pass first try and it's super fast. anyway, try apt-get update before you type apt-get install preenv laugh.gif

I'm just trying to help. Don't flame me if I'm wrong still a beginner in Maemo biggrin.gif
*
apt-get, application manager, fapman and every other app that downloads apps depend on the repo...

repos are like universal directories...

you can browse maemo repo from ubuntu on pc as well...

also you can browse ubuntu desktop i386 repo from your phone as well...

without setting up any repos on your phone... your apt-get cannot search from the directory, hence it wont find anything.

what i noticed, apt-get shares the latest repo database with the default app manager, not with fapman. fapman stores it someplace else...

so make sure repos match both on appman and fapman.

It's actually quite easy to open up N900.Plenty of guides available out there.
Only reason why Eiraku dismantled his phone was because he had no confidence with his AP warranty provider(COMSAT).Even after the dismantle the phone was working fine for some time.
*
yeah, usually some ah beng will try to 'fix' your phone first using his skills... switch on switch off, remove batt, take out mem card, take out sim card, rub the sim card contacts with an eraser (all ah beng tricks).

even nokia care (zitron/avaxx) is full of ah bengs now. the other day i brought my friend's phone there since there was a firmware update and i had no specific cables with me.

they ask me 'what problem ?'

i tell them again, no problem, just need firmware update.

again i am asked 'what problem ?'

in the end they did not update the phone, said i didnt bring warranty card.

they said they needed to send the warranty card to KL (i am in penang) for approval and will take few days.

the phone clearly had an intact warranty label from AVAXX/Zitron. The said warranty expired 1 week ago, according to their 'system'.

i ended up just leaving, without an update. wasted 30 minutes there waiting at Nokia CARE.

they should rename it - Nokia Appointed Ah Beng Service Center

I wonder why Microsoft & other Windows Phone 7 manufacturer trying so hard to prevent users from changing the microSD even though the slot is provided...
At least Nokia don't make a mess like this.
*
lets say...

1) maybe they swap from the mem cards due to lack of RAM (bloated OS)

2) maybe not enough internal storage to install apps to, so install to mem card, therefore need really high speed microsd cards, slow cards = slow apps.

3) dont want you to use normal mem cards and complain that the phone is slow while loading videos and music (thats what apple does, no ext storage, all iphones same storage)

4) a lot of fake cards in the market. in a way its a good idea to stop those.

5) standardization of all similar models

6) they already signed some contract to cerrtain card manufacturer (favoritism)

I blame jananan for posting the v42 news laugh.gif
I think you can download the .deb v40 files manually from the repo, uninstall v42 & install v40 again.
*
hey guys, dont blame me.

its not like your N900 is dead because of me.

you can reflash the original kernel in 3 simple steps.

1) get online

2) sudo gainroot

3) apt-get install --reinstall -y kernel kernel-flasher

PS : anyway, you guys agreed to your N900 going up in smokes when you added the extras-devel and extras-testing repo, so dont blame me.

you guys not explaining in detail.

lets see, step by step.

1) turn off phone.

2) slide open the keyboard

3) press the 'U' key on the keyboard and hold it. dont release.

4) now turn on the n900, the other finger still pressing the 'U' key.

5) let go the power button as usual but still keep the 'U' key pressed.

6) wait a moment, you will see the tiny USB logo at the corner of the screen

7) now you can let go of the 'U' key

8) connect the micro-usb cable and type the commands on the PC

something might be wrong with your USB cable...

try with another usb cable.... also try with the usb ports at the back of your computer, if its a laptop try another usb port.

also make sure you're not running windows 64 bit...

The R.bin file can be done. But not the vanila ones. blink.gif
*
did you run the command for R.bin with -R at the end ?

you should not, because -R will reboot the phone and not in flashing mode anymore.

flasher-3.5.exe -F R.bin -f

then when it completes,

flasher-3.5.exe -F RE.bin -f -R

Added on November 12, 2010, 12:54 amthat is if your fiasco image is named R.bin and emmc is RE.bin

i am not sure what names you have up there.

can ?

flash both again.

because its not advisable to boot after flashing flashing the R.bin, should flash RE.bin directly after that.

anyway, you're already on the right track, just remember not to put -R

Kernel Power v45 + h-e-n

So far there is 2 issue
1)Mounting via GUI does not work perfectly.Need terminal to execute the mounting command.
2)Hardware such as external HD which requires more power does power up but not detected properly by the kernel.
*
mounting will never be perfect...

its always sda or sdb or sdc or sdd...

the mounting function cannot guess the right one...

only some sort of automounter will work... but that will be a different app... nothing to do with h-e-n

one example the automounter used in ubuntu....

once h-e-n is complete, i am sure someone will start to work on automounter that sweeps the bus to see any dev usb hw added to /dev and mount it automatically....

until then its manual mounting....

*
vnc is a simple app. as simple as it gets.

you install the vnc server app on computer, start as service if possible.

set up with password.

note the IP of the computer.

install vnc client on the phone.

put in the computer's IP into the client app on the phone

voila.
