Here's what MSI-MY told me regarding the warranty sticker issue:

QUOTE(MSI-MY)
Hi Zakov,

Checked with my colleague. It will not void the warranty as when you send in warranty, they will check if the sticker was being removed on what purposes.
If HDD or Ram was changed, then it's entitle for the warranty.

Hopefully this will be able to clarify your question.

Feel free to contact us if there's any enquiry.

Thank you.

So the bottom line is, the sticker serves more as warning that changing the components other than RAM/HDD result in voiding the warranty.

Hope it helps.

Hello guys, I just purchased the GE40 2nd hand from a forumer here. wink.gif

So far I'm quite happy with it, already knew what to expect since I read reviews and impressions at notebookreview and here for starters. Heat doesn't seem that bad but maybe that's because I'm coming from an old "oven" of a laptop. tongue.gif

Apart from the poor screen and mediocre cooling performance, I'm content with the laptop. Bought startisback since I couldn't stand Metro. XD

I've got a question, can we just fit in one of those universal ODD HDD Bays(12.7mm/9.5mm)?

For example, this one:

http://www.lelong.com.my/silverstone-tools...7-01-Sale-I.htm

Since I'm planning to get a 2nd 2.5 HDD for storage and I'd like to know whether I can replace the ODD drive. I'm aware that the US version of the laptop has that caddy/bay so I'd like to know whether there's a substitute for it for us local buyers.

yes you can.

btw beside that RM65 one, you may consider my product:
https://forum.lowyat.net/index.php?showtopic=2600686&hl=

you can put ur removed dvd into the external case and became external dvd drive
*
From what I've seen there are two dimensions of these Universal bays. So is it safe to assume that both 9.5mm/12.7mm models will fit on the MSI GE40?

Thanks for the info btw.

QUOTE(Eiraku @ Jul 24 2013, 12:10 AM)
Hahahaha. Okay dokey.

New update guys. ANOTHER ONE of my AC ADAPTERS just got FRIED. The score is now 2 adapters vs the GE40.

It was the CoolerMaster NA90 I bought after I got scared when the HuntKey Mini 90w got stuck under some pillows and threatened to burn itself down (it heated up like nobody's business). Now using the Huntkey again, hopefully it doesn't heat up too much - giving it a lotta room to breathe this time.

BUT SERIOUSLY, DOES MY GE40 EAT ADAPTERS OR WHAT? I was using the laptop happily, playing some Japanese "light entertainment" 3D games (with the battery disconnected, cause heat kills batteries rite). All of a sudden, Bzzzz POP! And everything just dies. Now the NA90 is COMPLETELY DEAD.

I'm thinking it actually DOES suck more than the rated 90w under extreme loads (although I really wouldn't call what I was doing "extreme").

SO, am I just EXTREMELY UNLUCKY when it comes to adapters, or is something EXTREMELY WRONG with my GE40?
*
I haven't been following your posts previously, so forgive me if I'm wrong. But the 1st adapter that failed was the stock GE40 adapter is it? Or is it just the third party adapters that you bought?

Sigh. Funny that the laptop isn't giving me ANY PROBLEMS except this maddening issue. I'm gonna go all out later and get myself a Coolermaster USNA 120w adapter - if THAT dies than it's just weird.
*
Was thinking of buying the USNA 120w adapter as well. Never hurts to have some sort of contingency given that the stock bricks do get alarmingly hot.

Maybe we should wrap the power bricks with bga heatsinks. XD

Maybe you were just unlucky with the stock adapter? Could've been faulty and whatnot.. I've just left the adapter on for a whole day and I did several loops of 3DMark11 along with a short BF3 session. Although it did get hot but I it's the same as my old Dell Inspiron(in that case the battery died first but the charger kept going for 6 years).

Found a link to the Coolermaster USNA 120w.

Well, I wouldn't say it's a case of lightning striking twice since you did use two different adapters with perhaps slightly different ratings. tongue.gif

Nevertheless, your theory that the notebook consumes more than 90w is more than plausible.
As a matter of fact I think a lot of the bricks supplied with consumer notebooks probably just meet the power load demands based on their QC.

It's definitely not the case of giving headroom(like we usually see with desktop PSUs) it's more towards making the brick as small and portable as possible. Which most users want anyway, and the fact that not everyone will notice that their brick gets hot. biggrin.gif

EDIT: A bummer about the 120w USNA. Did they mention when new stocks will arrive?

Hmm, I'm sure there are reputable sellers that carry the legit 120w Delta or MSI OEM chargers. Something to consider in case mine goes kaboom as well. Touching wood as we speak. sleep.gif'

Just some translucent, aero style OSX pop-up knockoffs when you turn stuff on and off with SCM or the FN button combos. Which reminds me, WTF is "Eco mode" for anyway when we already have Windows managing our power profiles?

Oh and kudos to All IT Hypermart:

Turns out I was still under the 7 day exchange period, so I could exchange the broken Coolermaster NA90 for the HuntKey Xman by just paying up the difference. Very classy, All IT.

Initial impressions, this thing is THIN!

Nice impressions there. Although I just read a review about the XMan on Techpowerup here: http://www.techpowerup.com/reviews/Huntkey/X-MAN_90W/

Decent score but there are issues with ripple suppression, which in real world usage we might not notice.

Looking forward to hear more about the Intel 6235 WIFI card, I'm also planning to go for the Intel 7260AC card as I've just upgraded my home router to an ASUS RT-AC66U. Won't hurt to adopt new standards early(apart from the costs that is).

Btw, anybody want to sell their stock 8GB DDR3L RAM that came with the MSI GE40? biggrin.gif

I don't think our GE40s came with DDR3L. Only normal DDR3 IINM. I think only the new M14x comes with 3Ls as standard.
*
Yep, but from what I read our laptops support both DDR3/DDR3L but the condition being the DDR3 must be a maximum 1.35v. It is possible to run it with 1.5v RAMs but it will have negative repercussions on the rest of the hardware.
Refer to here:

* The warnings stated applies to all the mobile Haswell models.

I do have a stock 8GB RAM from the GE40 that is just sitting around doing nothing. It has not been used at all on my end. As soon as I received my GE40 I swapped it out. Not sure if it is DDR3L or what. I'll get a picture for you later.

Would definitely appreciate it. smile.gif

EDIT:

Found this:

Didn't mention list of laptop it supports, it only lists the diameter of the tips that it has. hmm.gif

I think the MSI GE40 has great battery life, been using it for a week now, and I can get up to +5 hours on normal browsing in Office Plan(ECO Mode).

To be honest for the GE40, since the native res is on 900p I think the GTX 760m is more than enough for moderate-high settings gaming. The GTX 760m is the same as 765m but for lower clocks. I would spend the amount for the MSI GE40, buy IC Diamond 7 and re-paste, buy a 12.7mm caddy for a 2nd HDD(in the ODD slot) and get an SSD. And get yourself a spare compatible 120w notebook adapter.

If you must have 1080p and on budget(>4.5k) go for the Illegear RE-15.(But as stated before, better source out the upgrades separately, the ones provided in the store are expensive). If ASUS released a 14" with a Haswell refresh for their ROG series, you should consider that as well, but it's a long shot. There's the Gigabyte P35 and P34 series as well but it looks unlikely to reach our shores any time soon.

So the eco mode thing actually does something. I'm honestly surprised.
*
Well I would just say it allows quick switching between the power profiles, which is useful as opposed to going to Power Options all the time. I find that Office mode gives me the most battery life(whilst browsing), hence I usually switch between that and Gaming.

I got this laptop quite cheap(as mentioned before, 2nd hand tongue.gif) so it leaves me a lot of budget room to get more stuff and heat eventually doesn't become an issue for me.
I have a portable notebook cooler that I carry around with the laptop, and a Logitech 100s and Razer Nostromo for my portable gaming fix(or office "lan-parties"). So while the laptop gets hot, it doesn't affect me as I'm using peripherals.

Build quality isn't good but I usually take good care of my stuff. smile.gif

So for me the only cons are the crappy screen and the fact that our local model doesn't come with the 2xmSATA RAID connector(which I can't seem to find anywhere).

The Corsair Vengeance SODIMM modules usually found here are the 1.5v versions. Not recommended to run it in Haswell chip laptops.

Any DDR3 1.35v Sodimm module would do I guess. This is not saying that 1.5v RAMs won't work, because there have been reports that it does but it's not recommended if you want to keep everything running optimally.

Something to share with you guys, here's my discussion with MSI-MY regarding the stickers on the palm rest.

QUOTE(Zakov)
Sorry to bother you again, but I have another minor query to ask regarding MSI's line of Gaming Laptops.

Does MSI allow for users to remove the stickers on the laptop's palm rest?

I'd like to know if I could remove the stickers from my experience with previous laptops, the stickers can leave residue over time and it also makes the laptop's appearance less appealing(IMO).

If I were able to do so without voiding the warranty, I would personally remove both stickers(the specs sticker and the component manufacturers sticker(Intel, Nvidia).

Just wanted to know if it will void my warranty if I do so.

Thanks.

The reply:
QUOTE(MSI-MY)
Yes, you may do it. As long as the warranty sticker on the bottom is still intact.

Thank you.

I don't know about you guys, but I'm definitely going to remove the palm rest stickers. biggrin.gif

The big ass GE40 sticker on the left palmrest actually shields your from the hot palmrest that is heated up by the GC underneath it IMHO. Pealing it off might expose you directly to hot metal.

Also, as MSI support seem to be fond of you (they don't bother with me), try asking them about prices for:

1) Extra GE40 battery.
2) 120w adapter from the GT laptops.

I'll call them myself, but last time they told me that "they'll get back", and it's been a week since. Sigh.
*
Hmm, is that so? Might have to think twice then but I've always found those spec stickers to become sticky over time. I've owned a Dell Inspiron and a relic ASUS notebook that had the same type of stickers.
Actually the reply was just answered this week to a question I asked last week. biggrin.gif
I'm sure they need to relay our queries to the proper channels so it might take a bit more time as opposed to a normal sales question.

Do share the information you manage to dig out regarding the battery. I might be planning to get a spare as well.

For the ODD Caddy, you can get it for RM65 on lelong or cheaper from taobao(via a trader agent). I think storm88 also mentioned that he carries a model that supports the GE40.

I thought most ODD caddy's come with the covers included? The cover will resemble your standard Optical Drive with a button and LED read/write indicator but I would assume pressing the button would do nothing.

From what I've seen listed on lelong and taobao they do have it included.

Some of them even comes with a small screwdriver. tongue.gif

I am using a Logitech gaming mouse... I just create a shortcut to toggle swap between the three profiles and to announce the "plan".. No more clicking on puny icons.. LOL

Check this out:

The first thing I did as soon as I unboxed the laptop, after raping my GE40 with the camera, was to remove the stickers.. LOL.. she's now all naked and hot for me.. and she just gets turned on so easily.. and oh oh! she is plenty feisty as well as really have the stamina to last man.. LMAO...  doh.gif

I already removed the stickers but the "MSI Gaming" sticker is proving to be quite a challenge. Seems like it doesn't want to leave the laptop no matter how hard I peel the corners. doh.gif
