QUOTE(ChipZ @ Aug 20 2011, 03:44 PM) Hey guys, no bro, if your mic works finely with your stereo system, it's definitely not the cable. i had minor problems before with a L6 Gearbox Pod Studio XT. i thought i was not getting any signal from the mic (i'm using a sennheiser e835), but i found out i was getting a weak signal after all. i assume you're using the gearbox/pod studio application in your laptop. if yes, check the outputs while testing the mic. let me know the results.I have started using Pod Studio UX1 a couple of months ago and everything works fine for other instrument (guitar and bass). However, when I tried recording vocal via a Mic, there wasnt any sound detected. The mic that I'm using is AKG D77S and I'm sure it is working finely when I plug it into my house stereo system. So there are two possibilities: 1) The XLR cable is faulty - this possibility is quite low as it is a newly bought cable. Is there a way to check if the cable is broken or something? 2) The Mic is not supported by UX1 - since it is a dynamic mic and UX1 does not provide phantom power. I'd really appreciate if anyone could point out the reason and how to overcome this issue. Thanks a little bit of on what i just said, but XLR is a standard cable. there are definitely music shops there in KL that sell it. you just have to find one. |

But I tested the mic with another cable (XLR connector to guitar jack) so that confirms the mic is working but not the XLR-XLR cable. As I'm not from Klang valley, it's kinda hard to get one here and even if they have, its like at least 3m long. The one I bought is just 1m+. So I need a way to confirm that the cable is working. Otherwise, it might be the configuration of the POD or POD Farm that I'm missing.a little bit of on what i just said, but XLR is a standard cable. there are definitely music shops there in KL that sell it. you just have to find one. |

To me AKG and BeyerDynamic are the best. very reliable on sound an quality, though expensive.but before buying one, you have to try and test a lot and find the one that sounds the way you like, caus they all have their own singular and unique sound rendering. Also, you may have to choose between an "opened" one (for monitoring, because of sound overflow) and a "closed" one (recording, soundproof with external sounds, can be overwhelming if you use it a lot) Another thing you have to consider is how the headset remains comfortable after hours of work, with ears and head. that is a very important key factor. Mine is a Beyerdynamic DT 990 pro (opened), I'm using daily it for 4 years now. It has a very good restitution of the whole frequency range and slightly increase the lowest ones, the rendering is great, I can't help but recommend !! |

Yeah, I heard a lot of good reviews abut beyerdynamic in recording forums. Personally I kinda prefer closed headphones but I've yet to use closed headphones for monitoring. Wouldn't open headphones allow more noise to get in? If you don't mind me asking, how much did yours cost and where did you get it?but before buying one, you have to try and test a lot and find the one that sounds the way you like, caus they all have their own singular and unique sound rendering. Try messing around with the mixer as well. Make sure mic gain is up. Sometimes i forget and i freak out when my mic doesn't produce sound lol. BTW dynamic mics don't run on phantom power. only condensers.I have started using Pod Studio UX1 a couple of months ago and everything works fine for other instrument (guitar and bass). (i don't want mac at the moment) likely, i'm not looking for budget one, of course i need good ones! i'm not a millionaire but average people can buy, good quality and works great for any computer music. any suggestions? |

FL Studio for 10 years? Really? Few years ago FL Studio was still a toy but it's now becoming more and more powerful. My advice is stick with FL Studio (it's getting more and more accessible hence more and more recent stuffs are produced in FL but I'd encourage you to get the latest version), then get a decent yet affordable audio interface (you can consider Focusrite Scarlett 2i2 but if you're doing a lot of recordings/ input at the same time then you might need to consider other options) then of course, a pair of decent yet affordable monitoring speakers - Alesis M1 Active MK2 comes to my mind (if you have extra budget, the Yamaha HS-80Ms are great)..and finally a midi controller, you can simply go for the simplest and most affordable 25 key controller without anything fancy onboard...All this would then cost you around RM3k, which is very reasonable for beginners.
And if you have extra cash, please spend it wisely on your room treatment. A general guideline is that you should spend the same amount of money for the treatment as much as you've spent for the speakers. There's tonnes of DIY studio room treatment videos that you can easily find on youtube so have no worries. And of course you'll eventually need to spend around RM1k plus for a pair of decent monitoring headphones- AKG or Beyerdynamics are great choices but please do your own research. AND...finally reserve some cash for some good VSTs that you'll need to purchase...and production sample packs. This post has been edited by EricLow: Apr 22 2012, 03:41 PM |

Unlike most of people who despise FL Studio (yeah, it didn't support MAC anyways...), I already knew it was powerful. 'Nuff said of it, for the budget wise, I am saving some money up for the rigs, in progress. However, I will research Focusrite Scarlett 2i2 audio interface to see if suitable for my choice. I think I used before Alesis M1 monitors, could be cheaper than any other brands. I was thinking of getting 49-keys 25. Any brands in mind that you could recommend? Some of my friends doing composition using M-Audio, although I heard it wasn't a good brand for midi controller, that's what I heard. I have Audio Technica M50 in mind. It may not be as good as AKG or Beyer Dynamics, but it does a good job for me, as I feel it is for me, ever since I've been drooling to own one. I suppose room treatment will be the last. after all, I'll start out from good desktop PC, good sound card compatible to any audio interface, midi keyboard controller and monitor headphones. the last thing to worry about was a good pair of monitor speakers and room treatment. Still, I haven't found anyone could possibly recommend a good spec of desktop PC to produce music. Anyone can share the thoughts? |

QUOTE(andyreymex @ Apr 22 2012, 08:59 PM) Hey thanks for the suggestions and guidance! I'm using M-Audio Keyrig 49, it's really one of the most budget midi controller available..been using it for 2 years and it's good- as in it's a very simple plug and play device just like ur USB pendrive, no installation needed so I can't see why it's not good or user friendly. I supposed it's the same for other brand when it comes to midi controllers..and of course, it's just a cheap plastic controller so please don't expect it to feel like a piano.Unlike most of people who despise FL Studio (yeah, it didn't support MAC anyways...), I already knew it was powerful. I know a lot of people are trying to avoid M-Audio products lately because of their horrible customer support and they also tend to make their products more compatible for Pro Tools. Some of their recent product hence have become less user friendly if you're using it with DAWs other than Pro Tools. That's what I read from the internet, please correct me if I'm wrong. Haven't tried Audio Technica M50..but I suppose a budget Sennheiser HD280 (closed headphones) is not a bad choice for a lot of people. AKG 240 MK2 (open) is also great if you could top up a little more. I'm using Alesis + Scarlett 2i2 + Senheiser + M-Audio Keyrig 49 for my own stuff, without room treatment. I suppose I will only treat my room once I've got extra bucks, or when I win lottery one day. This post has been edited by EricLow: Jun 24 2012, 02:40 AM |

I just finished doing some acoustic guitar recordings yesterday at yNOT Studio (belong to fellow forumer engbok). Did a few tracks using AKG C1000, SM57 and a My MIC Condensor microphones.
Man, I'm so blown away by this MyMic la. Used it to get the room ambience and it captured sound with such clarity it was amazing - even the sound of the strings and pick can be heard with such crispness (good thing didn't use it as a close mic, would've been way too trebbly). The mic really makes the recording sounds like an acoustic guitar playing rather than a tinny stiff electric guitar. Anybody used this MyMic b4 ka? |

I guess its not too bad, but a little disappointed once you develop an ear for microphones. |
