well since its just for practice, u might not need up to rm5k. sure shells are important, but with very good skins and the right tuning, your drum can still sound awesome. money also should be spent on cymbals, for that, theres no cheaper way. u get what u pay for. lately the new zildjians arent that good. found out their quality dropped drastically over the years.if u're really on a tight budget u can go for staggs. they sound awesome. i know and heard of a few local drummers who drum professionally buying stagg cymbals.

well if u're gonna spend slowly(and know u have $$$ to spend) in stages then get something good(more higher end, preferrably not 2nd hand)...be patient and in the end of the day u dont have to sell anything off and have a nice good set.

what i was suggesting was if u had a budget and wanted to just buy once. however it would still sound good if u do that, just that u must know how to tune the drums well. the problem with 2nd hand drums are the hardware being worn out/rusty/etc. drums arent like guitars where 2nd hand ones are still ok or value increases. 2nd hand ones are just too troublesome.

avengers88, theres alot of drum video lessons online. among highly recommended vids are mike portnoy's progressive drum concept, liquid drum theater series, etc. I cant tell u where to dload them, but, im sure u know how to search for them.

besides that, listen(and if theres videos, watch) to as many music genre's and musicians u can get ur hands on. i have a 200GB external hdisk to my laptop just to store my music and it helps me alot in the creative process of coming up with ideas.

and lucky u, there will be a drum clinic end of this month!!! check out today's star newspaper! WHO IS GOING???

Noob here with some questions..
is it easy to learn drumming?
whole set of NEW/2ND HAND drums are?
does Yahama teach drumming? are they good?
*
1. thats a subjective question. depends how fast u learn, how much hours of practice u put into it.
2. depends on what drums(and hardware) u want, and the condition of it.
3. i think they do teach. depends who the teacher is, not the institution that determines whether its good or not.

usual cymbals, hi hats and rides that comes with the set are usually for practicing purposes only. i dont see the point as it actually discourages practice(and is a pain to listen to). lol.

staggs cymbals u can buy those in a set or individually. those in a set comes with hi hats, ride and a crash cymbal. there are low end sets to moderate quality sets which is around rm200+ to Rm400 i think. not too sure. have to ask JS music. i would recommend u getting them individually as u get to choose what kind of sound u want. prepare around rm200-rm300+ for each. if u're around jalan imbi just go to JS and try. they'll pass u drum sticks and let u smash the cymbals to test. not smth we can usually do in music stores in malaysia.

hey there. welcome to the forum. was there watching u play at ur first gig. *cough*my fault the dawn missed soundcheck*couch*

i think the cymbals topic has already been mentioned in this thread. guess u have to start reading from page 1. haha. well, mention ur budget and the type of cymbal sound u r after.

as for skins theres aquarians, evans and remo thats good. my personal preference is aquarians but then its all about what u want. do check out aquarians bass drum batter head(the one with the rings inside).

im not sure about the price of aquarian skins since i got mine quite a while back.

sabian's and zildjian are both excellent cymbals. all comes down to the sound u want. however, alot of drummers agree quality of zildjians are going down over the years compared to good ones around the 90s.

yes, its normal for drummers to bring their own snare drum to gigs. im not sure how ur gretsch sound, but i see picolo snare being quite famous to be brought along to gigs. some just use it as their main snare(replacing ones available at gigs) or some just use them as extra snare.

This is my future setup and also 2007 will be cymbal setup. Got a month more before upgrading and remove the unwanted. Please comment & share some of your opinion, thanks. smile.gif

It's based on 1 snare, 4 toms(tom 1/tom 2/2 floor tom), and a bass drum.
