Hi,

I hope some lecturer will read my post and share their experience here smile.gif and reply my questions below.

1. I was wondering how to become a lecturer in a local university besides waiting a job vacancy advertisement in a paper or in the website.
2. I’m interested to become a lecturer but the problem is I don’t have a master yet. Will they consider if I’m only having a degree?
3. How about a salary? If my current salary is higher than normal lecturer, are they able to offer a higher & competitive salary compare to me? At least same or higher than my current salary.

Owh, before someone ask, I've a few experience in industry in various company including top 500 Fortune company and I believe it's time to contribute something to our country especially in education.

Thanks

I don't have a master yet. Maybe I'll do it if any university want to offer me a good deal smile.gif
Subject that I prefer is computer and I'm specializing in something which I believe not so many people know about it smile.gif
I believe I can help students to get better job based on my working experience in the industry.
I know a few lecturers and they have master. Surprisingly, their salary is lower than me.

there's better chance if you hold a master. but degree also can, depends on which institution and also the course you're going to lecture(critical or not critical). for further info, better ask the university whether you are qualified or not.. hope that helps..

Make sure u can teach & have experience! I've encountered lecturers in my U during my studies which can't teach & don't even have working experience. When we ask something about outside industry & technology..the answer is don't know.

Without exp still can be lecturer in Uni? That's new? I've always wanted to try that even at private colleges but sadly, I think without the Masters, I can't do anything. All I got is a partially completed professional paper.

Become lecturer nowadays must have a master degree. If u just got degree, chances is only in any private university. If for public university, u can apply for politeknik, kolej komunity etc ( any colleges). Agreed with breaker84 , there r a university that provide a scheme for lecturer that dont have a master, but u need to make sure the CGPA is at least 3.5 (if im not mistaken).

How long have u been working in industrial field? what ur specialization? if u have working for 7 years and your specialization is networking, maybe i can proposed u my company then. Salary as lecturer is not so high. then u choose, either to have a higher salary or to contribute something.

Why not u do a part time teaching first? then u will know whether the education is really suit u or not.

Hey .. wireshark, if not mistaken, u r specialist in Telecommunications with data packets analysis or some sorts of it right?

In local university, definitely u need at least master to become lecturer. For private university, I am not sure with that. Salary of lecturer may not high as u working in current company, but their benefits are good and time is free. If one day when u become the government staff, don't be shocked by their benefits, government are providing good benefits for them. Another thing is, no matter how good or bad of your teaching quality, you will never be fired, trust me. So far as I see, one lecturer mostly handle 8 hours of lecture per week (rare case, other lecturers might just have 4 or 5 hours only). For sure, politic issues are less inside university, if u capable, u can apply for associate professor, no limit number of that, unlike outside companies, there is 1 manager only for department. With associate professor title, then your salary and benefits can jump higher again. All these cases are referring to local university.

Depends on what you want.

I knew someone who did her masters overseas, being sponsored by the university. First she becomes a tutor at the uni for a while before flying off. While studying overseas, her tutor salary also jalan at the same time. So, after completing her studies, she needs to become a lecturer for a few years to honor the contract.
You might wanna try to check that out.

very dependent on your uni and coursework(dependable on course and subject) .

if coursework few and student/lecturer ratio is very small, then enjoy like hell.
if coursework a lot and student/lecturer ratio is very big (damn few lecturers, too many students syndrome), then suffer like hell.

if you want to apply to become lecturer, there are few ways to do it:

1) if u want to apply to research universities (UM, UPM, UKM, etc..)
they don't take degree students. they only take master students based on special occasions. in conclusion, they generally accept phd students only.

2) if u wanna apply to other ipta (UPNM, UNIMAP, UTEM, etc..)
they do take degree students. but its best if you register for master programme and then apply. for example, at UTEM, they are short of lecturers in Electrical engineering dept. So, the chance is high if u have master degree b4 applying. at UPNM, my fren applied for it when she's studying for her master program.

3) if u wanna apply to become politeknik or kolej komuniti lecturer (under SPP)
they accept degree holders. currently they have SO MANY vacancies. I've been called for interview too eventhough i didn't applied for it.

4) if u wanna become UITM lecturer
usually they open the application at the end of each year. my fren got the offer. he has to work at uitm sarawak once he finished his master. sweat.gif

this is what i know for engineering students. maybe it also applies to other students.

start with poly and gain exp from there ~ some of us might have small amount of exp in industrial and want straight go to lecture in U? Be realistic . Lecturer's job is to educate talented student in what they are pursuing. But that not the case nowdays. Money take over and our education fail!

if you want to become a lecturer, aim for the best! complete your PHD and pursue for your PROFship . If you want to become lecturer just because the job is much more simple, having higher benefit or some sort like this ! My advice is DONT. You are simply wasting the your time, student time and may ruin the student life!

Judging from your forum name and your signature, you're in networking right?

I'm not qualified to give any comment but one of my lecturer once told me, if you to do your master, find a professor who wants to take in Master students to assist his/her research. That way you can learn from the professor's research, get paid and do your master at the same time. Hope it helps. smile.gif

Hi

Sorry this topic is quite old, but i have question to ask. I plan to be a lecturer soon. I have 9++ years of industry experience (in computer programming) until now, work at various companies such as software house, banking and currently at GLC. Have degree in IT before (cgpa 3.1 only), and just graduated with Master of Computer Science (part time study).

My question is, am i qualified for lecturer comp science / IT position in IPTA, and with plus this industry experience, can i straight to senior lecturer position?. And how do i apply for this job?

Thanks

lecturer? maybe. senior lecturer? no. not directly at least.

to become a lecturer u need a PhD. without it, u need either a professional qualification related to the course, or a substantial amount of experience. 9plus years is good enough, especially having worked in various companies. these can be viewed as equivalent enough for u to get into the position as a lecturer. but u need a PhD to advance. unless u're happy stick as at that position.

My older brother just recently work at KDU Penang as an English Lecturer.

He graduated with 1st class Master's even though he technically has 0 working experiences.

He used to work as a private tutor in Penang for about 3 months and a Mandarin private tutor at the states for about 6 months. Hope this helps.

To go into a public university, you need a PhD or intend to do a PhD. With a Master you can only become the tutor unless you have industrial experience.

If you go into a private university/university college (not college), you need to have at least a Master to be a lecturer. With a degree, you can only be known as a tutor.
