My suggestion would be to flash to JM8 or JM9 first, with 512 pit and repartition checked. Then, flash to JPM with 803 pit and repartition unchecked. Works everytime for me.

I opened http://www.java.com/en/download/help/testvm.xml in the Android web browser and there was no applet running - not supported, I think.

Can you still access the internet via 3G/2G? If yes, are you running MarketEnabler or MarketAccess to simulate non-MY SIM? If yes, that's probably it.

With MarketAccess active, I see no APNs in my APN list too, but internet access via Digi 3G is still ok.

I wonder, do the web browsers on other mobile platforms support Java? Javascript maybe, but actual Java?

Best way to know for sure is to try both firmwares. Anyway, as for me, I am sticking to JPM for now, especially since I'm comfortable with the super-optimized JP6-JP8 kernel (currently on 3.3, itching to try the the speedier/newer 3.5 release). Will consider 'upgrading' if that kernel supports the newly released firmwares..

I think it's all a matter of perspective. The SGS is my first ever Samsung phone, smart or otherwise. No major disappointments as far as I am concerned. Easy to root, easy to update firmware, lots of active development work by the great people @ xda-developers forum, active group discussions @ lyn.net forum.

Phone itself is fine although I would like to be able to get a power pack addon to give a boost to the battery or a larger capacity battery to fit into the phone without changing the back cover. The SGS may yet be the phone I keep for longer than 1 year. I've had PalmOS phones, S60v3 and v5 phones, WM5 and WM6 phones, Blackberries, just have never had to urge to own an iOS phone.. Hmm, maybe I'll get an iPad soon..

Will wait for some feedback on the kernel's performance/stability under the newer firmwares before I jump..

Never say never. My real concern is malware or trojan horse within apps/games that either steal our personal data (from the phone) or open backdoors for people from the internet to hack into our phones.

Currently sticking to only using either paid apps or free apps from the market. Trying very hard to resist downloading/installing 'ahem' apps and games..

The paid version does batch restore, no 1 by 1 prompt.

Nope, no incoming call issues with JPM that I have experienced (I am on Digi as well)..

Come to think of it, I think I had one friend complain that he wasn't able to reach me (line always engaged) last Friday as I was busy using the phone as a Mobile AP, serving 3 wifi client laptops..

Could be issue with Digi and not the phone or firmware. Maxis users, any similar issues?

I don't remember seeing 'update all' in the market app when I had Eclair on my SGS. A Froyo feature, perhaps?

Titanium Backup (paid version, not sure about free version) works fine in Froyo. Don't believe everything you read, people say.

However, I would not recommend backing up stuff while running Eclair, updating to Froyo and restoring your backup into the new OS. I am very selective when it comes to restore, I usually just restore some apps' data.
