Currently i'm using Windows Vista and just received my Ubuntu CD. I intend to partition my hard drive using Windows Vista disk management and install Ubuntu into that additional partition. However I'm new to hard drive partition. If i were to boot from ubuntu will i be able to access Vista's files and vice versa?

If you are using the latest Ubuntu, Gutsy, ntfs-3g is pre-installed. Therefore, you will have read/write access to your Vista's partition by default. Else, you would need to install ntfs-3g from the repository if you are using an older version of Ubuntu.

On the other hand, if you would like to access the partition which Ubuntu resides on from within Vista, you would need to install this.

cause I remember, that red hat linux's screensaver can be set advance, which is for example, the Gear, can be set wireframe, how?

You can navigate to "System" -> "Preferences" -> "Screensaver"
There is an option for you to set. smile.gif

Try to delete the whole partition using gparted on Ubuntu LiveCD. Then try installing Windows on the laptop.

Keep the LiveCD, its very useful. Imagine if you cannot boot into Windows/Ubuntu, and you have tried all options and the only other option is to reformat, you can backup your data using live cd

Screw that. I found a better way for you biggrin.gif

1. Download GParted LiveCD. Burn it into a CD, and boot using the CD.
GParted -- LiveCD

2. Once you have booted, run Gparted, and delete all your partitions biggrin.gif I hope that you have done all the backup you need to beforehand.
Screenshot of GParted LiveCD in action!

Don't forget to click the Apply button!

I have never done this before, but my friend did it to resize his NTFS partition. Works great.

Please get back to us on the result! biggrin.gif

Err.. I think I am getting confused here. Do you mind doing this and tell me the result?

sudo fdisk -l

This way, we can see which partition you want to keep, and which you want to format as Windows. I first thought that you want to erase everything and install Windows for your gf.

ok, sorry for the confusion. the HDD is a 80gb with 10gb, 35gb and 35gb space. previously i was using XP and installed it to the 10gb partitioned. after checking out ubuntu, i planned to install it and formatted the 10gb and installed it with gutsy gibbon. now, since my gf want to use the lappy i need to install back XP. and the problem start to occur. i dont want to mess around with both the 35gb partitioned.

No problem then. Just use the method I mentioned earlier, but delete only the 10gb partition.

Pop in the Windows CD, and format only the 10gb partition.

To be safe, I suggest you backup that 70gb (35 + 35). Just to be safe. You never know whats gonna happen.

i deleted the 10gb partition using gparted in LiveCd. but still, it is not working. the formatting menu is not there. (after inserting the XP cd). this disk is not contain a winXP compatible partition. that's the message i got.

I think this is because of the partitions of your hdd.

I need you to take a screenshot of gparted and save it somewhere. We need to take a look at what kind of partitions are there.

The first partition might be an extended partition (instead of primary) so that might be the problem. I had this problem before while trying to dual boot Ubuntu/Windows. In the end I had to delete the Windows partition and go 100% Ubuntu. Couldn't find the solution.

Anyhow, get a screenshot of GParted so that we can see which is Extended Partition, and which is Primary Partition.

If this is the problem, there is a way to repair it, but involves high risk of losing data (coz we need to move and resize the partitions). Like I said earlier, I suggest you back up that 70gb partition.

Zaidaiman, where are you? A little help is nice here tongue.gif

LOL

I heard before that you can actually move and resize your partitions in order so that you can create a primary partition at the start of the hdd. But like I said earlier this involves high risk of data lost.

Start the backup! and format everything biggrin.gif Sorry I hate to suggest this sort of method, but I googled around and couldnt find the solution. Last resort I guess.
