I have an iPad which I am constantly trying to figure out how I can use it for work.

Most of the time, I just take notes with Pages, meeting minutes with Pages as well and then later email it to my corporate account to be distributed.

I also use iBooks and Dropbox to sync, store and read PDF documents especially as reference during meetings.

I tried reading PPT files via Dropbox but I noticed that the alignment for some of the graphics, text boxes get screwed up so most of the time I convert them to PDF for reference purposes.

Since my work laptop is locked down, I can't install iTunes on it hence it gets quite difficult to fully utilize the iPad at work.

How about you guys? Any recommended applications or methods or working?

I had the same problem. In the end I sold off my iPad and bought a new laptop.

Yea..I feel typing on ipad is not faster than what i could do on hardware keyboard.. I only type for chatting session. Guess need more practise to get as good as like a keyboard. Its doable anyway.

It is a picture/document reference besides my working station...So i can fully utilize the whole monitor screen for programs.

I haven't found a way to replace my daily working stuff on ipad yet.

Until now, i still treat it as entertainment device instead of a getting my job done tool.

Gaming is so much fun on ipad..haha..
Now my life become more "works" to do now.. Aiks...

Well, for work, people normally use it for emails on the go. Check out financial news, magazines, newspapers and of course making notes. For making notes, with the stylus is much easier I think...
And also there's a super good organizer for planning as well as contact book...etc...

In the future, OS4.2, there will be wireless print, so you can print your documents wireless from the Ipad to a wireless printer.

Plus I am sure there are apps on the market which will definitely help in your work, you just have to search for it.

Maybe this article will help, showing how this person use it for work, and there's also a Top 20 Apps for Ipad...
But its is well known that Ipad CANNOT replace a pc, you still need a pc to do some of the more hardcore stuffs...

This article is also good: http://blogs.techrepublic.com.com/hiner/?p=4137

@Mavik: You don't need iTunes to take full advantage of your iPad unless you wanna sync your music/videos to your iPad. As for apps, you can download them directly into your iPad through the built-in App Store. Just my 2 cents.

Its not about getting Apps, e.g. iTunes is also used by the iWork suite to transfer files and documents from the PC to the iPad. Hence the workaround for me is to use Dropbox which does that over the cloud.

It's not only to be used for work, I also use it to show photos to my clients as well as use it personally. I am trying to get even more use out of it during work as well so I can eliminate the need to carry more notebooks (the paper versions) as well as documents about. Just figuring some methods to make things more efficient, reduce the need for printing materials and save paper wastage.

1 thing I have not figured out is how to keep my e-mail accounts in sync across platforms.

I have notebook, desktop (both windows) and iphone and ipad. What I have read in desktop shows up unread on ipad. To go through 100+ e-mail in order to clean up is no joke.
Anyone knows how to mark all e-mail 'read'.

I use it for:

Emailing at cafes
Meetings - referring to docs via documents to go
Presentation during one 2 one session
Manage my travels via trip it and flight track
Light documentation work using document To go

Fact of the matter, it does not replace the notebook but it complements it, especially for the road warriors.

Hi, i'm about to plonk my money down for an ipad but i was just wondering if some kind souls here can help me. I did read quite a lot regarding ipad but i thought comments from its users are the most relevant ones. Here goes, i will use the ipad when i travel and my work requires me to review reports that are in MS Word (docx format) with charts and all. My question is, is there any apps in the market today that has the "track change" function because as far as i'm concerned, Pages doesn't have the function and it's critical for me to have that function. How about any other word processing apps, and will these apps display the formatting properly or will it "run" a bit?

thank you in advance!

As of yesterday Number & Keynotes can export to MS Excel & MS power point already.

I have been heavily promoting the iphone & ipad to the MIS staffs. One guy even says he can allow itune to be installed in my office PC. THats great, but I tell him it still needs to be connected to my account. He says he'll look into that next time. So far I have gotten them to soften up about WIFI around the emails, calander & wireless file transfers in the office. I try not to push it too damn far.

We'lll see what happens when the MIS boss starts using iPhone 4.

I have been using my Ipad mainly for work, for almost 2 months now. So far my experience has been pretty pleasant. I mainly use my ipad for:
- referring to price list/ PDF/ Office documents
- jotting down notes during a meeting
- go online whenever i need to (especially when i need extra information other than those i have prepared beforehand)
- emails on Exchange Server 2010
- presentation to clients (via Keynote)
- occasional gaming during travel

To be frank, all things listed above can be achieved with a normal net book or laptop... But one thinf is for sure, my ipad can run for 3 days on 3G until it needs a recharge... This is not achievable on any other computing device.

Guess Ipad is a entertainment gadget rather than a "workstation". I have Iphone & Macbook Pro, I was trying to get an replacement for my Macbook as it is heavy for me to carry around during work. But lately I notice, ipad is not an replacement at all. Dropbox will incur additional cost, hmm... may be just use ipad as a diary and "note"book..

@jazcah: Steve Jobs has already stated that the iPad is NOT meant to be a computer replacement. Just take it as a tablet-based portable media player.

Check out "Sundry Notes", there is a free lite version to try. Really worth the USD4.99 with embedded pdf, word or excel files inside a scrollable window. Sync to Dropbox, Evernote etc. I have 3 to 4 notes app and this is awesome.

I use iPad to replace my office notebook when meeting clients. With 3G connection, it makes my presentation so much easier when I want to propose new solutions since information is just a click away. Yesterday my Day 2 using iPad at work, and it helped me closed a deal, faster, although not a big ones. My customer was very impressed with iPad, asked me where can she get it cheap lol.

Download and use Zinio. The free magazine previews are limited but interesting for casual browsing of some tech, business magazines, etc. US and UK-oriented but interesting casual browsing content. I like the Economist. Malaysian must teh reading more! Then our England more powderful one! And hopefully brain better too, instead of working like dogs for the "ruling class".

Added on November 29, 2010, 11:48 pmAlso, you should try out RageHD if you haven't. Bl**dy nice shooter, and bloody too. Best shooter graphics on iPad at this point in time. Also, Cut The Rope on iPad. Nice. Fruit Ninja I hear is awesome but haven't tried yet.

Acceptable speed in iBooks application for reading books and PDF.
In Zinio, acceptable as well. Not super-smooth, but alright.

yeah me too, just got my ipad yesterday...i read thru this thread b4 i decided to get one... i'll mainly use it to surf net at home (wifi connection on desktop not very strong so i can sit anywhere i want with the ipad, plus start up is faster than desktop, very convenient for casual surfing), read ebooks, check emails, now gonna explore how to use it for work, mainly presentations, will def store documents on it thru dropbox and bring them along when i travel for work... and then there's games and movies...

The iPad for me is an entertainment gadget rather than a device to replace laptops or even netbook. Each device is targeted for a particular purpose. If we try to carry out tasks that other devices are meant for we will be disappointed. I use mine for reading ebooks and pdf format magazines and books and the screen display makes reading a great experience. I own a Nook and an iRiver ebook reader and the iPad makes reading more enjoyable. Web browsing is an additional experience. But seriously if you want iPad for serious work, better get a lightweight laptop. My opinion.

I Agree with you

Try to use Mac Air as your lightweight laptop .

It is very convenient if you want for a serious work and carry everywhere . It it very light ! almost only 1.06kg.

basically i'm using my ipad for 2 main purpose:
1. my part time study. put all my classroom slides inside the ipad so i dont print it and save environment. ehem.

2. for work. as a marketing guy, i use the ipad to do presentation to sales guys, shows application video to customers, check tools functionality compare to schematic diagram in ipad, put the price list inside so i dont need to bring the thick price list book anywhere... the list is unlimited....

but still on editing part on Powerpoint/ excel, still need laptop for it. ipad makes it easy for me to show the file, not to create it.

just my 2 cents.

Hello guys,

iPads at work? Hmmm.. I use Penultimate with Elago stylus for minutes taking and jotting. I use Dropbox a lot to sync files from my Mac to iPad so no USB needed. Created quite a decent presentation file using KeyNote in one of the seminar i've attended thanks to the beautiful templates provided.

Now i dont have to print any slides for my own copy. Just convert to .pdf and view it using iBooks apps. No printed version needed if i want to view it at my own convenience.

But please, bear in mind. iPad is still not a Laptop replacement. If you are thinking of getting a Laptop or an iPad, get an Laptop. MacBook Air to be exact. If you are thinking of getting a Netbook or an iPad, get an iPad.

I have an iPad for about 3 months now and I really want my company's Outlook to work on my iPad... Got damn frustrated, tried for 3 months and it cannot work on mine!

My colleagues have no problem on their iPhone and iPad, we entered the same info too! Why me? sad.gif

It keeps on appearing "Unable to verify account information". Does anybody have solutions for me? Or any way which I can reset the mail settings?

Your company's email server is on Exchange 2003 or 2007?

Have you configured all of the required details into your iPad?

I mainly use my iPad to carry all my documents around and jot down notes in meetings, but thats it. If I need to write a memo or something I'll just run back to my desktop or borrow someone's laptop.

Portability is one of the best feature, as I need to be connected all the time and bring documents around. Also, my department is 1 of the top ten in the company who waste paper a lot... blush.gif

Are you on firmware 4.2.1? How about checking with your Exchange admin? Some need to enable passcode in order to download mail.

Edit : Just got to know it is Exchange setting.

Just to share my experience using it for work. I was contemplating buying a laptop initially for my wife to work. Basically she just needs to make entries in a spreadsheet for her accounting purposes. Then when the iPad came out, I thought that buying it would make more sense, since we do not need a powerful laptop to use Excel right?

So I tested some office softwares. I have only the wifi version, and my wife's place dun have internet. So need to edit documents offline and sync them back when she got to a wifi.

Here are the softwares tested and my feedback:

Apple Works : Numbers - Pretty graphics, allows to export to Microsoft Excel format, but I never try that. The deal breaker is that I can't export to cloud storage. Need to use emails. YUCK!!

QuickOffice : Pretty graphics, tabs that actually looks like tabs. Remembers your last page viewed. Can store to cloud storage, BUT it cannot edit the content offline. Dealbreaker I'm afraid! sad.gif

DocsToGo : Worst graphics among the trio, tabs needs some page switching. But it can store to DropBox and edit GoogleDocs directly! And the best part is, when you are offline, you will still be able to edit it! Once you have wifi, you can sync back the changes! Perfect!

1)surfnet, like reading newspaper, reading blog, facebook game, online banking, IM and checking email.

2) watch video, play some small game, read pdf book.

3) Minor editing/creating the MS words/PowerPoint file from others person pendrive/email.

Of the above, facebook game is not possible, since iPad does not support flash. Editing from other person's document via pendrive is tough, you will need to use a lot of workarounds, like use a camera connection kit, put in cloud, send via email, etc.

Otherwise, the rest works beautifully.

Errmmm ...... Samsung Galaxy Tab? A bit expensive though for a 7 inch screen. But it has front and rear facing cameras and expandable storage via microSD. You still need to copy your document via the microSD though....

Anybody else has any other recommendations?

hi, i have Quickoffice too. It can sync with Dropbox and i usually trasfer it to my ipad for editing offline. After editing and i get to a place with wifi, i just drag it back to Dropbox to sync. In Dropbox, when you label your file as a favorite, you can still access it when you're offline. How does DocsToGo amend files from Dropbox when it's offline?

Better go for galaxy tab, vewsonic viewpad android version is just the same as csl spice mi700. The spec is not that good... The best current alternative tablet is galaxy tab.

If u can live without facebook game and able to change ur life to use cloud storage rather than usb thumbdrive or sd card, ipad is the way to go.

Facebook game is not the "must" to me, surfing internet and viewing document from my friend will b more important, because sometimes when i meet my friend outside, i can take n view a file from my friend ( although this is not alywas happen).. so if it can read from pendrive will be a great thing...hehe tongue.gif

Personally, I think that the iPad is good as long as you don't have to do any complex work like creating charts and power point presentations from scratch... Or at least I have not learnt how to do those yet smile.gif

However, my iPad was more than sufficient to sustain me during a 1 week work travel in which I used the iPad to prepare and edit documentations, communicating with office, reading reports and others. Best was I didn't have to carry my heavy office laptop to do all these smile.gif

I don;t think to own an ipad is a showoff. Is whether you know how to used it or not.
Personally, I used both. I don;t created presentation using ipad, but instead , I used it to present the powerpoint that I created using a PC.
Why I do that? Simply because to create a full presentation using ipad is a bit hard, but to modify the content is easy. Put it this way, if you need to keep on modifying your presentation even till the last minute, you are either not fully prepared for it or you do a lousy job on it. A good point from fluffy,
"get good batt life, quick on/off on-the-go convenience.no start ups." That is major. THose that do presentation a lot would understand what is mean by time is essential. You need to deliver the fact fast and accurate.

I even used it to access my AutoCad drawing send by my designer, client . I used Ipad for such time because of the fast on-off and normally, minor changes are need to be done which can be done using Ipad and vio-la, is done and I can email the copies to everyone instantly about the it.

Can it replace netbook.. well, IMHO, I think is possible, but again this is very personal. For me, I had completely sell off my notebook, laptop and netbook once I get used to Ipad. Is light, easy and moreover, mobility.

THose that treat it as a gadget of games playing, well, it will always remain as another PSP and NDS and if you one of those, please don;t get Ipad, you are only utilizing hmmm.. say 10% of what it capable of .

If you know what you want to do with it and there are apps that support it, I guess, you will find it amaze.

I agree with this part... Nowadays many people buy the iPad because it is trend, if you know what I mean... I have nothing against them, it's their money, their choice...

Yeah... Most of my friends owns an iPhone only knows how to play games, facebook, foursquare and iPod..... They do not know what's iOS, multitask, etc. Some of them do not even know what's data usage, and end up receiving 200++ in their bill... doh.gif
They bought it mainly because everyone is using it...

I would get iPad (wifi) just for casual web surfing, or watching youtube videos. Its not a substitute for a laptop.

Reason I purchase iPad.

1. Reading E-book. iPad allow me to read book in dark room. Of course, lying down in switched-off light room.

2. Movie. iPad allow me to watch movie when traveling.

3. Surfing internet before sleep and after woke up. Lazy to turn and off PC.

Gaming ? No for me, PSP is much more better.
Typing ? No, a cheap laptop is x100 better.

Thanks for the reply. Ipad by default can open MS Office files with pre-installed Office suite ? Or I need to install 3rd party Office first ?

Can I use FaceTime over Maxis/Digi/Celcom/UMobile 3G broadband internet ?

Your 1,2 and 3 are part of my reasons too but my other reasons are

4. The small and light form factor easy for hand carry in air plane.

5. Fast start up for presentation.

6. Photo album.

7. On the spot information googling any time, any where with 3G.

Aeiou, to answer your query on FaceTime, I had used FaceTime via maxis broadband but it has to go through a mifi device as FaceTime only works with wifi connection.

I use my ipad to read pdf ebooks - science text books (Biology, Physics, Chemistry, etc) and encyclopedias - reference stuff which I use in my work as an editor. Imagine carrying those thick heavy books around. Now I don't have to. It reads these large files (up to 120 MB) with no problems, and fast to open, too. I use Safari to check my emails from contacts - which it does very well. I read the current CNN news as they are featured.

For serious work and portability I use my Samsung N150 netbook.

These two combinations are good enough for me. No need for ipad 2.

Documents to go is pretty good, i even use it to edit word docs. All in all it's a useful tool, but not vital. If u can afford it, why not bring it along to work? I'm a ollege student and it's great fr just slotting in between my books and for tsking notes, and games, and social networking. Oh, and browsingg.
