have u tried installed task management tools like JBTaskman before to your phone? if you did, i think that app can help u in tracking your available ram.
i was a N81 user before i changed to N82, so i understand what you are saying. N81 has really little internal memory, after installing ngage + nokia maps, it really has around 5MB left. I am not too sure about your situation as i never installed nokia maps 2.0 last time.

restarting your phone doesnt really affect your phone memory(C:) apart from the caches...as i mentioned, a fresh boot for N81 after v21 firmware is around 30MB RAM available to use, as for how much is left on your phone memory, it's entirely based on what you have installed.

as for your situation right, i really not sure, maybe you can try use apps like jbtaskman to monitor your ram usage first.

for all I know, after installing an application in phone memory , the application (well some of it), will start running on the background in RAM module.

Here's something else I wonder:
N97 - 128MB RAM?
After fresh boot, it's around 50MB++ (Phone memory)? Can't remember the exact amount.
N97 Mini - 256MB RAM?
After fresh boot, it has more than 100MB++ (Phone memory).

I think la, coz it's nearly similar that we're using Windows OS.

I like my SGS very much with its application (install in internal memory). Unlike my previous N97 that have huge internal memory and internal memory, but a waste.

lao yah symbian fail due to some stuburn apps default install into C: and not selectable... 

nop... nokia ovi store update, java runtime update, flash update... all these core apps no option for installation path and most of them quite huge in size... try to fit in kingkong into a kancil...

Think after froyo ur current SGS also flying to heaven....  no need to wait for next gen.. later ur Battery last 3 hours..
