A couple of days ago, I went to LowYat to buy a Samsung Galaxy S..The salesman was talking about all the featuresand what not in the phone. As if I didnt know what Samsung Galaxy S was packed with. I went with the flow and just listened to his mumblings. The shop was official Samsung shop.

Since he was talking so much about that phone, I decided to 'test' him out. I asked him about HTC Desire and his opinion on it. He suddenly started to talk junk about HTC Desire as if it was the worse phone in the world. I was like wtf..Just because you dont sell htc and are official samsung dealer, doesn't give you the right to bang other phones! I could've defamed the galaxy right on his face if I wanted to, but since I'm a man of peace, I just didnt bother. He even said that there were "many customers who bought desire, returned to him for galaxy". Hello! You're talking about customers. Ask a samsung employee, they dont even trust their own products.

I went to HTC booth to ask their opinion on galaxy S. The guy politely said both phones are competitive and even showed me where the authorised dealer was located at. Thats the spirit of competition. Not like what Samsung portrayed.

At least, analyze your customer as he may know more than you! Dont bang your rivals just because you want to make a sale. Luckily the galaxy was for my mom or else I would never give a damn for people like that.

Sorry for letting it out here guys. I really didnt like the fact that he was fooling people just to make his sales. Loser!

No real point in this I guess. It happens just about anywhere and with any brand. It really is the problem of the salesperson and not so much the brand itself.

he MIGHT have his own reason (like sales target, etc) even though he sounds wrong...

is like u going to ING insurance booth and ask them an opinion of other insurance company like Prudential..u will get a same answer too

Exactly. The spirit of competition, although noble and great, does not help you sell your products.

In the end, if say product A is a superior product, and you have a bunch of people selling product B, if you want to actually sell stuffs, you cannot let your customers even try out product A, and you have to close the sales there and then. This is from a sales POV.

From a customer's POV? My advice, dont go to seller of a product expecting a fair comparison. Best to always research yourself as much as possible.

Well this type of bluffing tactic will work if it is 20 or 30 years ago, but not now in the IT era with internet that make info & comments so easy to be obtained. . .

BTW, this topic got anything to do with [Android], sound more like a kopitiam topic. . . rolleyes.gif

the sales person needed to re-train. no point to step on competitor and praise own product. if he can analysis both pro n con, then he is a Guru.

A good salesman will exhort the positives aspects of his product. A bad salesman is one who derides his competitor. The former will do well while the latter will only enjoy a temporary success and will " die off " eventually

Watch what you say dude..I clarified in the post that I did buy the SGS..watch your words and be nice okay..you dont have to post if you're not happy with it..

Thanks for your feedback guys. The whole point of this thread is to say that if you want to sell your products, at least dont bang the other products..if we are bound to buy your product, we will buy it anyway and if we are not, we wont buy it..just like that htc guy..i asked him and he politely said what he was suposed to..did he get a sale? He didnt..but at least he gave the proper insight..

That samsung guy said people were returning desires and going for SGS..how stupid can I be to believe that? As if I didnt know how good the desire is..

i am sorry i dont see the point of this thread. Most users today do their research on the internet and immediately buy from online seller to get cheaper than retail price and happy with it.
You should learn to do that as well. Shop seller responsible are to sell the phone not otherwise =)

Why do you haveto mention that there is no point of this thread? I'm trying to have a healthy conversation here. Of course I know what I was doing and what I was buying. My purpose of making noise here is to tell the people not to trust the sales people blindly and at the same time trying to deliver the message to the sales person to not defame other brands just to make a sale. If you don't feel comfortable with the discussion, you don't have to participate it. Jeez..

shahz is a very knowledgeable android user and fan. He's among the first batch of android fans in this part of forum. In that respect, product knowledge wise, he's more than capable.

We are on the topic on salesmanship, which could be better posted in the general mobile phone subforum instead.

My take is that salesperson is a discredit to the sales profession. If you have to face something day to day that you don't care or have no passion for, you won't do a good job, no matter what.

I guess the moral is that it is always pleasant to just be nice, and if a customer asks about a competitor's product. A polite statement such as "It is best you request the information from xxx company, or search the internet for a comparison. Here, I can only tell you the strengths of my product." End of story.

Exactly bro..Poor salesmanship is what I call this..At least I didnt expect this from Samsung authorized dealers..Maybe if it was a normal mobile phone shop, I would've accepted it..

Why didn't you dispute the Samsung seller's claims instead of playing along? That might make him think twice about BSing the next customer.

Why not tell him what he was doing was wrong, since you feel so strongly about it? Again, that might make him think twice about BSing the next guy.

And why, for goodness' sake, did you still buy from him after what he did? What kind of message is that? Is there no other place that sells the Samsung?

I have seen and have experienced it before. So I know how it feels to be in shahz's place. Sometimes it isn't nice, especially when they go why don't you want to buy it?

I mean obviously an item costing a few hundred or more shouldn't be an impulse buy, so I just tell them I will consider.

And it becomes worst when I used to make a living marketing a particular brand, and walk into a boutique selling that particular brand. And when the sales person starts going off and rattling some information at me, I cringe inside. Not that I don't trust the product, but rather, I know what the product is good for and where to give due credit. But it isn't a solution to everything and anything.

Because this story is actually way longer than this..I was in a rush that day and was in a pick, test and pay mood that day..You know, the days when you already have locked your mind, have enough cash and just dont want to make your stay long..If it was my strolling day at LowYat, I would definitely have a detailed talk with him, digging into technical parts and what not and wouldnt buy the set from him too..Also, I mentioned that I am a man of peace and I really didnt want to degrade him in front of his collegues and boss..that would be very messy..Least, I hope he ia reading this and learns his lesson smile.gif

I totally understand you mate. I've been a sales person too. I've promoted aeveral products in my time. Among them was streamyx. While we had rivals, we were taught not to bash them and politely ask the client to find answers. I wouldnt mind that guy bashing Desire if he was selling it too. Coz then I would understand that his intention is not sales.. smile.gif

Not everyone does that. If so, there will be more online selling sites for HP, than actual HP shops right?
Fact is, people still have more trust in a shop and talking with a sales person that you can actually see his face, rather than buying online. Thats why HP shops flourish like mushrooms.

Haha even in this case my friend, he might still be bashing for sales or commision. Sometimes, different companies/brands have different commision margins for their products. Say for example, if they sell both SGS and HTC Desire, but the sale of 1 SGS gives more commision than the Desire, then the salesman would definately prefer to push the sales of the SGS right?

Its very hard to find an honest sales person. Thats not to say that there isnt any around, but in your shoes as a buyer, its hard to trust 100% the opinions of a sales person. Still the best to do research by yourself right smile.gif.

@Shahz, haha yeah, I've known the sensation of cash burning a hole in my pocket.

But seriously, why buy from the douchebag even if you didn't want to knock him down a peg? Can his really be the only place that sells the Galaxy? Giving him custom only validates for him his approach.

there are many approaches to sales. if u feel dat bashing competitor brand is not acceptable, dat is entirely ur own opinion. somebody famous once said, it doesn't matter white cat or black cat, a good cat catches the mice.

for me, ranting and venting in an online forum is an act of a coward. why duncha say direct to hom? to me, proclaiming to be a 'man of peace' but coming to a forum and nag is not an act of peace and acceptance.

no i dun. actually i only give my honest opinion n related experience. up to customer to buy finally.
maybe my shops dun have much geeks/nerds but many normal ppl and businessman/businesswoman.
i wld love to sell to nerds/geeks as money from them is easy.
they usually spend most on phones and gadgets instead of other thgs.
unfortunately, i worry dat my current customers will not like to goto shops where there are many nerds/geeks gathering.

so i can tell u, 8 out of 10 customers will regret buying desire and choose other brands instead (not only iphone but nokia and bb as well).
so i stopped selling desire. but i am checking whether firmware 2.2 can makes things better a bit.

*
Exactly. I do like to meet up a sales person and talk to him about the product that I am buying. Not that I may not know about the product, but opinions do matter. But when a sales person suddenly go and say "dude, that other product sucks, this one is awesome", that clearly shows his refute towards the rivals. Wait, its not even rivals weh. Both are Android phones lar~

I agree with the fact about the commission percentage too. That is why its very hard to find a reliable sales person. I had a friend John Lim in LowYat whom I always approached for tech talks. He would never be biased and he hardly sold stuff from his own shop to me. He was the best sales person I ever met in the whole LowYat. Alas, too bad, he has quit his job and now works with a bank sad.gif That bank is really lucky to have a person like him working with them.

QUOTE(Cannonfodder @ Sep 11 2010, 07:57 AM)
@Shahz, haha yeah, I've known the sensation of cash burning a hole in my pocket.

But seriously, why buy from the douchebag even if you didn't want to knock him down a peg? Can his really be the only place that sells the Galaxy? Giving him custom only validates for him his approach.
*
Well, there were other shops selling the SGS too. But I wanted to buy it from authorised Samsung outlet because my mom travels a lot and it will save her a lot of trouble if he phone "kong" in a different country. And since I was running out of time, I clearly didn't had any choice. If I started debating with him, I would never had made it for the last buka-puasa that night sad.gif

QUOTE(kentang_peranchis @ Sep 11 2010, 09:14 AM)
there are many approaches to sales. if u feel dat bashing competitor brand is not acceptable, dat is entirely ur own opinion. somebody famous once said, it doesn't matter white cat or black cat, a good cat catches the mice.

for me, ranting and venting in an online forum is an act of a coward. why duncha say direct to hom? to me, proclaiming to be a 'man of peace' but coming to a forum and nag is not an act of peace and acceptance.
*
I know my stuff. I know what he was selling. I know it better than him and I know it better than you. go and check out my response on your arrogant bashing on Android in the other thread. I'm not trying to initiate a fight here. But if sharing with my Android brothers here is a cowardly act, then so be it. I'm happy sharing with them. And I don't want to correct that guy either. I got away safely. At least someone who reads this today will know what to do tomorrow in this same situation.

But @shahz, doing sale is like that... But I would say be prepared with facts instead of tembak buta.
*
Yeah, I was indeed armed with facts. That's why I walked to him and asked "dude, do you have an SGS?"..I was in LowYat that day to buy THE SGS..While he was opening the box, testing and what not, I just randomly seeked his opinion on SGS vs Desire..Which I didn't expect to recieve that answer.. smile.gif

Ok, wait. shahz has an SGS?????? WTH dude? You owe us a review. laugh.gif

I've made it my policy that whenever I notice a salesman is more interested in talking about why I shouldnt buy brand x rather than explaining to me why I should buy his product, I'll just thank him for his time and move on. That type of salesperson doesnt deserve my hard earned cash and he's a total failure in my books. This would explain why I'll never buy anything from kentang_peranchis (or any of his dupes).

This reminds me of a thread I read on XDA not too long ago about an incompetent salesperson. Unlike shahz who decided not to counter punch the guy, this particular person went the opposite route and bashed the poor salesgirl to pieces. End result, he got thrown out of the by the store manager. The subject in hand : iPhone4 vs Nexus 1. brows.gif

That Samsung Sales person is low class and lack moral.

If such sales person talking such things in-front of me, I will oh.. like that ah, but I won't buy from them as this also proof them either not sincere or no knowledge + I dislike this kind of person attitude.

and yeah Shahz, awaiting your review on Samsung Galaxy S. biggrin.gif

Yes, nowdays very hard to find a good salesman which is not money minded. Good salesman usually very poor in his sales figure. Because he is telling the truth too much.

and salesman should analyze buyer needs, and fits in product according to needs, not just banging other brands. and in the end the choice is from the buyer/customer

Depends on how you take it actually..To me, if the salesman tells the truth and is honest to me, I would trust him more and in the future buy from him again..Not to mention, encourage my friends to buy from im too..That John Lim, although he didn't recommend me anything from his shop (since he was working in BenQ which later upgraded to Toshiba), god knows how much stuff I bought from him - for myself and my friends..

Honesty is indeed the best policy..

Hmm... Same scenario when I was shopping for my Motorola Milestone

Some doesn't even know about the Milestone and started to suggest the X10 to me. I just told him that just because the X10 is selling like hot cake (that time), that doesn't mean it packs the "full punch". Furthermore, I'm looking for an Android phone with a physical keyboard, something which only Motorola has that time.

Since I'm pissed and have a lot of spare time, I just find a shop which quotes me the lowest price. Found a shop, the boss directly asked me what's the lowest price I've got and he offered a reduction of RM30 off the price. Paid the deposit and collected the phone the next day. smile.gif

Sadly, over here in Sarawak sellers aren't enthusiast and wide knowledge about variety of smart phones especially the more extinct and premium ones. Yes, Desire and Galaxy is the bee's knees in the market here but I've set my eyes on Milestone XT720. So, I look all over the town for this particular phone but to no avail. Most.... actually all of the sellers have no idea what the imbecile mind I'm talking about. Too nerdy for them I guess. Some even say 'need to order' which is a very common phase over here (I guess they said that to avoid being retarded). And when I ask how long does it take to get here, they actually reply me by saying 'I don't think we can make the order, its not very popular.'

End up getting it online lol

Dude, sad to hear such incident happening to you, some salesmen are just plain dumb and probably he doesn't really know the product that well, so condemning other products is way easier than just telling you the pros and cons of SGS vs Desire. This is the salesman problem anyway, sad that samsung has this kind of employee to "represent" them.

Yeah man. For an international company, this is not a good impact on their image. Moral of the story is pretty simpe. If you try too hard to make a sale, you might end up losing it in the end. I know one day I will visit that shop again. That day, he's going to have a seriously long diacussion with me smile.gif

Actually, no offence to people from there or stay there in S'wak, few years back I wanted to buy a phone from the shopping center.

It(The phone) was quite new that time, but the sales person gave me a blank stare when I mentioned the model that I wanted.

Guess some sales person, just sales person. smile.gif

Simply said shahz..
There're so many kind of people in this world.. (I'm talking about mobile's world OK..)
1. Stereotype person: which only know and will only use one kind of brand or item and really die hard fan of it..
2. Universal person: own various kind of brand without consider how bad or good does it (uncle benny! thumbup.gif ) and the most important for them is, KNOWLEDGE..

So shahz, maybe you'd meet with stereotype person.. And don't feel harsh about it.. You know yourself which one is the best.. Me myself also really hate with any salesperson that don't know at all about HTC existence.. There're a lot of them in our country especially.. Chilled shahz!! wink.gif wink.gif
