Sugar Free Peanut Butter, Good enough for pre workout?

I understand that there is a pre/post workout nutrition topic sticky-ed on top of the many many threads. But it's promoting carb intake.
Currently I'm on a strict carbless diet and I'm looking at other alternatives. Certain body builders told me to just pack myself with calories and not care about the nutrition, some told me to pack myself with proteins, hence my only alternative, supplements, but Syntha 6 contains quite a huge amount of carbs. With me ignoring carbs taken from fibres, I'm only limiting myself to only 1 scoop of Syntha 6 after workout and I'm desperately trying to not rely on powders anymore.
My daily protein intake from meals is between 0.8g-1.2g of protein to the weight of my body weight in pounds. That doesn't include supplements.
On a bulking season, I would usually take more carbs for my pre workout such as oats/cereals/whole wheat bread, etc.
Now I'm just wondering the rationale of taking 2 tbsp of peanut butter which could give me in excess of 200cal and the fats that I need. The carbs is very minimal from only 2tbsp and the proteins as well.
My weights are done within 40 minutes plus a 20-30 minute cardio after that without any supplements.
Please advise. Thanks

In my opinion, peanut butter is not suitable for pre workout. First of all, peanut butter is not complete protein. Eat something with complete protein.
2nd, fat is not the the kind of fuel for weight lifting exercise, you are better of taking some rolled oat with less calories compared the calories from the fat.
Well that is my opinion and please correct my if i'm wrong

Thanks for the reply, fats is slow absorbing which is why people do not recommend peanut butters as a pre workout food, but there are certain people who loves the fats from the butter as it boosts the testosterone level.

if you're on a keto diet i dont see a problem with it. i assume that you are, since you mentioned you're on a "carbless" diet. if ur body is already in a ketotic state, ur running on fats anyways so utilizing that as fuel is no problem. in fact, throwing carbs into the mix may even pull you OUT of the ketotic state, unless you know that your body responds well to a targeted ketogenic diet (TKD) where you induce a carb spike during certain times of the day. [DISCLAIMER: not everyone can run or respond well to a keto diet successfully so please i hope you know your body well before testing out a TKD. personally i dont do well on it and do better on CKD.] but for ur post workout meal you should eliminate the fats and go for lean, low fat protein like egg whites or chicken breast. fat slows down the absorbtion of nutrients... which is not what you want post workout as you need that protein going to your muscles as fast as possible! hope this helps

Thanks LadyVanity, I thought about that but when I read about pre workout nutrition needs to be absorbed quickly and fats aren't exactly quick absorbing, made me doubt.
I'm using Steffi's though, bought from Cold Storage, couldn't find other brands.

MCTs do not require bile to be digested and processed, and are more readily absorbed and utilised by the body for energy than other forms of dietary fat (long chain) This post has been edited by LadyVanity: Sep 13 2010, 10:52 PM

If you're gonna buy regular PB of ourse its unhealthy cos it contains a truckload of sugar.... on top of preservatives, sodium and trans fats. if u pick up organic or natural PB, it wont be a problem. PB has a high amount of fat.... but a great percentage of these fats are heart-healthy unsaturated fats. also... i personally find that it helps curb hunger and cravings cos the fat satiates you. PB is also rich in vitamin B, E and iron. anyhoo... heres an article for you http://www.bodybuilding.com/fun/other31.htmits said there that PB is a poor source of carbohydrates. while energy-wise it is not a problem if ur on a keto diet.... it is important to have a carb refeed day or cheat day in order to replenish glycogen stores, repair muscle tissue, and mantain thyroid fuction. On full keto I can complete one workout on 2 spoonful of PB and 2 salmon oil caps.
But my battery is completely flat after that.

I tot fat can only be used in aerobic workout .... if anaerobic the fuel is from carb. If low carb, then it will be from protein. Or am I wrong ? Got source ?

http://www.bodybuilding.com/fun/sclark94.htmI was skeptical at first as well, but never try never know, I'm losing more than ever, with the help of fat burner pills as well la, plus cardio in the morning and after weights. The same plan but different diet(Calorie counting) worked, but the max I lost was 1kg of fats each week, but with the carbless diet, I've lost more than 3kgs of fats plus a little bit of muscle mass, perhaps due to my reluctance to refill my depleted muscles with carbs and please beware that it might affect your intensity when lifting.

Actually I didn't research anything on that, just that sometimes I got no time for pre workout meal so I used to take protein and 2 oil caps, then 1 day ran one of protein so I just took PB and oil. Only difference with and without protein is after the workout.

Just came across this thread. To avoid or lessen trans-fat in commercial PB, just buy roasted peanuts in bulk and put through coffee grinder. Even fried ones will have much less trans-fat. The peanuts have a shocking amount of oil, so no more need be added. If it is turns out too thick for your liking, add some coconut oil. Delicious and cheaper than jars @$13+
