currently downloading the games through steam... I've read the different between VIP, premium & free but still don't quite understand... so basically there's places you can't access if you play it free and you can only create 1 character?

adding up to what azizul1975 said,

there's no place u can't go, u have access to all the maps available even u r f2p.

the only things as a f2p player is, u r restricted to all quest on the region, certain raid/skirmish map, gold cap, bag slots etc. fyi the region's quest available to f2p is only bree region, loneland region, shire region (if i'm not mistaken). other regions? of course is open up to premium and vip.

means that the quest/ region only open to you when you paid the premium/vip? and its not forever? need to pay monthly?

If play f2p all along, is it affecting your character progress in the game? I mean level limit?

if you buy quest packs (QP), then you can access quests in those regions indefinitely. no need to pay anymore until you have out-leveled the area and need to move on to newer regions.

QP info here..

f2p have no level cap but as mentioned, you gain XP much faster with quests else it's all mob grinding..

for other difference, check out this chart..

my suggestion is that it's better if you play the starter zones for a while and see if you like the game.

btw, steam has a starter pack that complements Mithril Edition well (no overlap in quest areas)..

ered luin and celondim are free as well...

region opens regardless of your status, be it f2p or premium or vip, but not all quests open even if you are VIP, notably Moria and many more... you need quest pack for that, or buy it with "real" money
quest pack is permanent/forever, but not vip, vip is like subscription fee just astro lol.... but 5years they used to sell lifetime vip, i know 1 lowyatian is a lifetimer...
being f2p does and does not affect your progress depends on how you play the game...if you play casually it wont affect you at all, if you play hardcore it does effect you, not that much if you have quest pack
no level limit regardless of your status, f2p or premium or vip have no level limit/cap

helo I just joined LOTRO. Lvl 16 hunter now. Quite fun actually. A refreshing change of pace from WoW/Diablo3. Got that old "everything is so exciting and looks awesome cos it's new" feeling. Also the fact that I have to travel by horse instead of flying everywhere gives it a bit of realism/epic feeling as if you're in the LOTR movie and traveling through the shire on horseback.

if you like The Lord of the Rings lore, you'll enjoy LOTRO... the game still has a long way to go... the latest expansion RoR is still around the breaking up of the fellowship if you watch the movie....

i believe it is..

f2p till level max. just that you need to purchase quest_packs in order to do the story/quest .. else it will be only monster grinding..

Also free account are limited in terms of max gold etc.. so along the way you may want to fork in some money to unlock or farm for turbine points.

This game looks dead. No one really played this anymore.. A few years ago when I joined in, there were lots of players.. Now it is abit too quiet when I started playing again.. :/

not to say dead, but less player perhaps, since many new games come out like GW2 and borderlands2....

LOTRO followers are mostly oldies who play casually and enjoy LotR lore.... my Aussie kinmates are mostly oldies around 40+ year old.... i myself not play LOTRO much now since the GW2 launch....

Not really, with enough free Turbine Points farming (grinding) and this: http://forum.lowyat.net/topic/1548398/+1320#, you could enjoy the game at far more extend.

As for the deadness of the game, to oldbies like me, newer expansions offered less and less contents. While Turbine claimed the contents will be delivered in chunks, such as new instances, raids and new smaller maps via updates, the contents still feel abysmally tiny.

I guess I made my point along with some other players by not buying the current RoR expansion, because I felt it's too expansive for the content offered now. Even the Epic quests came in only 3 books continuing on the lacklustered storyline from previous expansion. The first half of RoI's Epics resolved by the Rangers got their arses kicked and sent packing to Gondor with their tails between their legs.

I login was morning (US) and evening (Aussie), looking at the number of players on GLFF is pretty much the same as the end of RoI. I'm still seeing the same old GLFFers still playing.

@airwind, we all pretty much originated in Elendilmir for it being the unofficial Oceanic server for Aussies, MY, SG, Indonesia, Philippines, Japan, and a couple of lost dudes from UK.

At the moment, I'm giving myself 1 hours or so leveling my currently level 47 LM up to level 75 to waste time while waiting for other games to update or show up.

Added on November 23, 2012, 9:50 pmA good news for whoever interested in getting the latest expansion, Turbine are now having a Black Friday sales on their online store, http://store.turbine.com/.
50% off on all 3 RoR editions and one other old expansion pack.

Elendimir. I used to have some super friendly US friends playing together with me. But their time is way too off for me to continue joining them to play. Now my hunter is here rotting lol, occasionally on to enjoy the lotro view haha. Anyone still playing this? Any active lyn group?
