Step 1. Cheese your way to Diamond
Step 2. Don't play league so you can keep the diamond.

The good way : keep playing, learning new build, and when you lose a match, rewatch the replay and check where you did wrong, fix the mistake and play the next match, and keep doing so until you're Diamond.

The cheap way : Play Terran and fukken MMM it!

Does not always work when in team games or if the other opponents do a tech rush.

Aside from watching matches which I lost, I also watch matches which I win, catch the details which you might improve even tho you win, and take notice opponent's mistakes and behavior.

Of course watch hi rank matches too.

1) No

2) 1 Month Ago

3) 3 hours per day (Sem Exam now)

4) Learn how to watch a replay instead of watching as if it is a movie.

1) No

2) End of phase 1

3) Only play less than 5 matches a day (not as crazy as shinji)

Watch replays of the games that I've lost.

1) yes

2) late phase 1 beta

3) weekdays 5ish hours weekends until exhaustion

tips: keep playing. learn from your mistakes, improve yourself (be it physical finger/hand reflexes, thinking/thought process reflexes), diversify your strategy, and improve your micro/macro. replays of your own mistakes is fine and all, but try to reach to a point where you can KNOW what went wrong without the replay. that way, you save that replay time, and can use it to play more games, get more experience etc.

However I do agree that their advice are for you to improve yourself

I find it better if you practice in a game with a referee who can point out ur mistakes~ coz sometimes when I play, I get so caught up with my own macro that I didn't notice things

for those who think player who got into diamond without playing SC1 is talented i would say very wrong

Since this is SEA server getting into diamond is relatively 5x easier comparable to US server

It just full of knowledge that recipe the skills-

Yea but haha.
If you think about it.

Not sure if this is realistic, but just calculating it on average. tongue.gif
Correct me if I'm wrong.
Let's say minus sleep time and eating time, hope he sleeps 8 hours a day and maybe take 2 hours of breaks just to eat, sleep, go toilet and what not. tongue.gif
He has 14hours a day, which is 840mins per day.

Let's say a game averages to 20mins. So he can play 840/20 = 42 games per day. Then 900/42 is around 21.5 days. It's almost a month haha. Basically he just plays non-stop since it came out. I guess that explains why he is so stressed and scolds people just for getting cheesed. tongue.gif He certainly needs a break.

Of course, this does not count the fact that he could be sharing account with a friend so the play time could be more than 14 hours a day. tongue.gif

I would say WR 60% and above and over 200 matches will prove he is a talented player already

70% WR are very gosu and this record still not achievable from what I saw in Korea Diamond league..biggrin.gif most of them are 60 and above

Still a diamond player with only 50-60% for me is better than a gold player who has 60-70% win rate.

Diamond players have to match up with diamond opponents..

Hahahaha. Thanks for the screenshot Nandeska.
Plus the comments some more. Now I understand why must be a screenshot. tongue.gif

Something is certainly wrong with the system.
He is suppose to be played in placement matches once he reaches rank #1 in the division. Then the placement would set him in a different league and probably half his points.

Either that or did this on purpose. tongue.gif
He just kept losing 5 games to put himself back in Bronze then play some more and then when he sees that he is getting matched with diamond, platinum and gold players again, he purposely lose 5 times again so he keeps staying in the bronze league. tongue.gif

Not sure if I got the system right...

It is good but there's a flaw that you can exploit.
I still find it to be the best system there is for RTS games.

Like C&C Red Alert 2 as an example.
When it first came out, you feel like you wanna vomit blood trying to play online. The matchmake system never works, so we ed up making custom games and wait for people to join or join people's custom games. To make things worst, there's no meter at that time to show what are the other people's latency so you'll have to pray hard that the game won't lag.

Gave up trying after my 5th game basically.
Think there was patches for it but I already went back to playing wow...

well it depends, went 3-2 with a fren (both of us are diamonds with other teams) for 2s and got to plat LOL...

i think the matchmaking system is fine...
if u keep farming points by beating noobs (especially wit the bonus pool) but looses to higher ranked opponents (losing 1-2 points only) then u will be stucked there no matter hw much points u got =p

agree. Losing to pro is fine but don lose to people who ranked lower than yourself. If you are able to beat 1 of the top ranked players , u will be promoted in no time. My most amazing case is , i played 3 games in platinum league 2 loses and 1 win and im promoted to diamond.

Interesting. My friend and I did the 2v2 and we won 5-0.
Ended up in Gold League only. tongue.gif

Maybe we only got at most a Gold league player during our matchups.
For my 1v1 I got a 3-2 I think and I ended up in Bronze haha.
Probably lost to a Bronze player in one of the games. That time still didn't know how to check profile at the score screen.

Now have to slowly climb up the ladder.

1) no point over saturating the mineral line unless you have plans to expand and transfer workers
2) sub 100 supply getting block for short periods isnt as crucial as the beginning where you can ALWAYS find ways to spend your excess resources while being block and it is most of the time useful too. eg: upgrades
3) for minerals thats the case, however for races like zerg, if ur going mutas, that wont be the case as you'll be larvae starved to go mutaling combo. that, and pre-muta you will have gas stockpile. (similar scenarios may apply to other races too)
4) what if your opponent put a wrench to your plan? still stick with it? (eg: i plan to mass reaper, opponent only got stalkers, what do now? stick to reapers and hand him the game?)

but of course, it is basic things (rather, GUIDELINES) for a reason, the point being to not follow it blindly.

really depends on numbers, the rays takes like almost a sec to "apply" (as in, the rays may be on the marine, but he doesnt immediately vaporize)
while marine stimmed, you get the idea. cheaper, easier to mass with reactors and all.

unless the voids are having cliff abuse advantage, the overall advantage favors the marine greatly. voids typically arent good to take out massed units that anti air after all. charge or not charged. and non charged voids, might as well forget it lol

same mineral cost minus the gas, and can build much faster than the void assuming with reactor. hell, make it 6 cuz of the 2x pairs.

to the 3rd point, it is a havoc when reapers sneak into ur base and 2-3 shots your CC or Nexus or Hatcheries, then u will cry, no money to rebuild base..lol

Yeah just play naturally and win. It'll come eventually. I'm not really bothered with diamond or plat, heck even WLR.....just play and improve yourself. I even lost a few ladder games to practice certain BOs tongue.gif

And yeah, 6 pool is less likely used on higher ladders. It's pretty much all in, and if you manage to fend it off it's pretty much gg for the opponent.

2) Play when 1st officially release
3) Weekly bout 5 hours, maybe more and less.

Guys, just wanna announce that today I reached my 100th wins for 1v1 rclxms.gif (The signature system haven't update yet the score).
Most of the wins are cheese wins. If I play macro (2 or 3 expansions) 80% i will lose the match.

You'll be promoted if you beat higher ranked players in most of your games. Basically, easier to say that just win most of your matches that would do. sweat.gif

Donno what went wrong to Bnet ladder system.

I played 4v4 and got bronze league, and won many games like hell.
Didn't get promoted to silver for so long.
And suddenly after a while with wins, i was promoted straight to platinum!
Skipping silver and gold.
Anyone experiencing this?

Check their match history.
They probably lost a lot of games until the internal matcher thinks that they are even match with a bronze.

Ah that's not what I meant. tongue.gif
You see their match history to see if the previous few games they were on a loss streak or not. The loss streak is the one that usually puts them down to fight with bronze players and still call it an even match. smile.gif

Added on October 1, 2010, 3:57 pmIt is because it happened to me before.
Playing too many custom games and later go back to 1v1, people have upgraded their skills.
Had quite a bad loss streak of 10 games one shot.
After that, I met bronze or silver players for the match up and they were called even match. tongue.gif
I was expecting them to be gold.

maybe you can help me settle my curiosity.

take my case for example.

i have not even 10 games. this morning played my 8th and 9th game.

after 8th game i was rank #45 (victory). 9th game also I won, come out check my opponent profile to see..........

Platinum league, 1 vs 1 Rank #13 (maybe rank drop after lost to me) with 645 games and 329 wins!!

WTH - that felt good! match starting that time he was labeled as FAVORED but i am wondering why #45 Bronze player was matched to vs a top 15 Platinum player, which is 3 leagues apart!

i look at his match history, it's a balance of Win and Loss. http://sea.battle.net/sc2/en/profile/18952...hes#filter=solo

what do you think?

or is it my victory streak that B.net decided to match me vs higher rank player?

its based on a hidden match-making rating (MMR) to determined who is favoured and not according to ur league/ rank...

yup. skill most important. just like how in games like BF:BC2 some people die die want to maintain KDR end up not helping the team. sad.gif

each loss = experience gained to do better.

Diamond isn't all that hard to get into. If i remember correctly, and i quote someone from the TL forums, "The difference between a 1700 diamond player and 800 diamond player is bigger than that off the 800 diamond player to a Rank 1 bronze player."

To get to diamond, i suggest that you learn a specific build order against each race and practice it to death. You can find stuff like these at TeamLiquid and Liquipedia. That alone should be anough to get you to diamond. Piece of cake tongue.gif

Sincerely, all the best dude.

It's been more than 2 months since i 1st played SC2 (i only managed to play beta for only few days becoz of the cut-off date) and now i'm ranked 10th on gold. Is that good progression or too slow?

to get the korean version of sc2 u need to have access to korean ID number (KSSN). most online activities in korea sites also require the user to have KSSN number to gain access to its content.

i just use the korean sound of zerg. it sounded soo cool.

when i was under atk, they rather siege up at their base than sending army over to cover me...
even had temmates who cannon wall their base LOL

exactly..
for me in random team games, u hv to communicate..
it's better for me to get lower league players in my team, as they are easy to listen on my plan..
and the map u played also played an important role on doing a strategy..

sometimes when u got attacked with combined armies from opponent, is not a good idea to ask ur teammate to help u if your team don't have dat much army.. usually i'll ask them to let me die and concentrate on teching up and accumulate their armies and i'll just play with my overlord wandering around as a scout.

lol if only they listened...
i asked for a retreat they still move in and die losing all their army...
i asked for a timing push as i scouted vulnerability (i'm the only 1 that scouted as well anyways) and they decided to turtle their army in their base sleep.gif"
asking for a scan is like trying to get them to send me 10000 minerals at times...

i would rather play wit my frens who know how to complement each other's play and not doing silly stuffs...
usually i top the scores but to see my team loose due to their unwillingness to follow the team...

2. try to win games u are not favoured

meet these 2 after a few games = promotion

Points

Your number of points is what decides your place in your division. After having completed your placement matches, you start out with 0 points[4]. These points only decide your place within your division, and there is a hidden "Matchmaking Rating" (MMR) as well, which decides which opponents you will face. Since there are no global or regional rankings, the displayed score isn't an accurate measure of skill[5] when compared to anyone else. This is because the visible rating does not match the hidden MMR rating, and is influenced by the Bonus Pool. Each play-season the visible rating will be reset, while the MMR rating stays intact. This makes it even harder to derive the true skill of the player.[6]

Earning and Losing Points
You earn or lose points by winning or losing matches, respectively. To simplify how it works in practice[7]:

y = (+/-)12 + x + z

where

"y" : the total number of points
"x" : the relative expected skill level between opponents (weighted difference in MMR which can be negative)
"z" : the points you get from your bonus pool
=> "x" is a value in the interval of [-10,10], positive numbers are when your opponent is favored

if the game says you are even, "x" is part of {0,1}
if it says your opponent is slightly favored, then "x" is part of {2,3}
if it says your opponent is favored, then "x" is part of {4,5,6,7,8,9,10}
(of course, if you are the slightly/favored player, then "x" is negative, which means you will lose more than 12 points)

"z" will be be greater than zero when

your bonus pool is >0
you are victorious
If these 2 conditions are met, then Z will be equal to 12+x, permitted you have enough points in your bonus pool.

Bonus Pool
The bonus pool is the sum of all "bonus points" you can get, which are added to the rating points you earn after a victory. They are there to give the player a catch-up boost if they haven't played in a while, in other words, they serve as a means to keep up with the inflation of points in the league.

Your bonus pool seem to not be reset once you move up (or down) a league, as your initial rating in that league should reflect your calculated rating at that point in time.

Hidden "Matchmaking Rating" (MMR)
In addition to your points, there is also a hidden Matchmaking Rating, presumed to be very much like the WoW Arena Matchmaking System. This rating decides which opponents you will meet, and tries to quantify your skill level. It (presumably) takes into consideration when you have winning streaks or losing streaks. Moreover, it is this MMR that decides if you're eligible for a promotion or a demotion. The aim for the MMR is to rank you in such a way that you have ~50% win rating. You presumably start out at 0 and then your MMR climbs to the level of the people against which you win roughly 50% of the time.[8]

yes I just asked uncle google.

I just don't fully understand the formulas, why pick 12? and why is it -/+ 12? if you lose, you lose 12 points?

Do you get to see how many points you have?

I just bought the game and did not skip the practice league, I still have 14 games left to play before I enter the placement matches so I don't know what it's like after practice league yet.

I notice some of the top bronze/silvers playing like a plat. Their macro definitely on par with a plat. Only thing they dunno is timing pushes. Dang.. if I didn't know better, I would've lost to all these players >_<

well this is true...
some of the bronze players i know can beat some diamond i've met with ease...
just that now its harder to climb up ladder compared to the early diamonds when the game is up...
another reason was the lack of confidence in their play when they see they are in bronze/ silver/ gold...

@Aeco

That's so true. They lack confidence sometimes. Just like me. I've rested my 1v1 since last month at silver. Now i've hit plats in 4v4 and 3v3, I'm going into 1v1 again, much more confidence.

I think confidence plays a big role in teaching you when to do pushes. Sometimes I keep thinking that the enemy is hiding a tonne of forces in his base, so I can't push in. After losing and watching the replay, I realised he had only 2 stalkers and 2 cannons left... and I had a 50 food army.

@SiewKaiz

Yup. Especially when stalkers are defending behind buildings with a better range than roaches.

yup that's y i always push my frens to have confidence...
some of them are in bronze but their skill level is definitely plat at least...
with the lack of confidence, they panic very fast with the false sense of behind behind after an attack etc when they are leading or in fact even...

again, watching day9 is a good way to improve

theres no such thing as entry barrier. i saw some bronze in NA, they only know proxy 2 gate in enemy base or cannon rush. and they only know how to do that, after they failed, they just leave the game.

if u are that afraid jz go custom games...

i strongly recommend ALL souls in LYN to read this awesome guide. it was meant for broodwar but it applies to ALL RTS games. to be entirely honest, anyone who wants to improve, no matter you are in bronze/silver/..../master will find this guide extremely useful. unless you are a progamer playing in GSL, you probably need this.

the most important is attitude, you gotta get your objective clear and right. then go for it.

i know its long but the author is very good in writing, he made me want to continue to read and read and read. i spent 1 whole day reading it. and it was well worth the time spent.

1) Have u guys played SC1/BW before?
Knew it's existence but that's it., never touched it

2) When did u guys started to play SC2? Since the Beta release?
around february 2011...

3) How many hours you play SC2 per day averagely?
Hardcore playing from february untill may, University Life taken over... 3 hours of sc2 over the week end..

4)Laddering practice is very significant when u're in bronze and silver... i got through them in around 2 weeks... Alot of cheese during these time.. Bear with it.. and after u finish with it u'll be amazed with how easy it actually is to be prepare for cheesing with proper scouting and proper building placement.. =D

How to become a diamond level players? Hire a coach is the fastest way. Of course, if you are passionate to become the decent player.

agree with this. By just mere clicking to 'find match' will take longer for u to master the game. As you have to go thru all the trials and errors.
If u hv an expert as a coach, they can sit beside u and tell u what must do, what must not.. More efficient..

I think most probably is because You don't need those nonsense. Secondly you can't be coached and lastly you don't even want to be coached L o L. Good thing the only thing you need and wan which is the 'Find Scum' button will always be there for you rclxms.gif

Some Gm told me that you can easily be a Diamond player if your macro is good. No fancy strategy is needed. So, is it true?

Also, how do you indicate the good macro?

1) Have u guys played SC1/BW before?
Yap, played on bnet but not very good. Played WC3 instead, i was top 3 random player on NA. My nick? same as my LYN nick but not sure if anyone remembers me or not.

2) When did u guys started to play SC2? Since the Beta release?

I'm too old for sc2 actually but my friend gave me as a birthday present last year so i mah play it loh since then

3) How many hours you play SC2 per day averagely?

1-2 hours.

And pls share with us all tips on becoming a good SC2 player..

You need to tell us what league you are in first.

Plat is easy peasy, just macro and build units. Make sure you outmacro your opponent then you'll go diamond.

Diamond is also easy peasy, aside from macro, now you need to learn how to micro and know 50% of the game mechanics. What counters what, when to engage, when to cut loses and pull out.

In masters, u need to know how to harass, micro + macro. Set up the field and map for situation up to your advantage. In short, trap and control.

GM, well u are the GM of the map itself. You control everything.
