+1 on the beach part. Not much on the snorkeling though. Not fussy about the hotel, but the again im a guy.

I'm going in March 2012. Can you give me some suggestions for accommodations in Surat Thani and Koh Samui for less than RM 30 per night. Tried Tripadvisor but have not made up my mind about my options because going to HCM in mid February 2012. Then have booked ticket to Sydney pulak in April 2012. My brain real jammed up about my accomodations. for my subsequent travel arrangements. Real sure about enjoying my Vietnam trip though becos well prepared. All first time going to these places.

Decided to stay in Koh Phanghan instead, the vibe seems more budget friendly + got nice off shore beaches so don't need to take that many snorkeling trips on boats (each trip costs like RM180!).

Also = My hostel is RM17 a night ^___^ Rated great, too. Called the Dancing Elephant Hostel.
