Traditional pre-u courses in UK = A levels. Concord, Bosworth, Bellerbys, just to name a few.

a downright rejection. but then it's expected blush.gif I guess my personal statement is too specific for their liking.

other university choices Imperial, Bristol, Southampton and Warwick for insurance. Already gotten offer from Bristol. 90% chance I will be heading there even if I get the offers from other universities.

What course did you apply for? Are interviews part of the application process?

just one question.... I got an offer from Imperial College. Is it worth the extra 50% cost to study in a very prestigious university over an equally-prestigious university like University of Bristol?

I'm taking Mechanical Engineering. If we take into consideration that Imperial is one of the best in the world for engineering... does that make Imperial the better choice regardless of its fees?
*
For engineering, Imperial is ranked 10.

Anyone had any idea of the "criminal record check" for UK university requirements. Some confirmation to be issued by Putrajaya?

And the health check requirements? Any validity period? If going in Sept, is it possible to do it now? Not specifically indicated on the offer letter.
*
Have you found out the required information? Offer firmed, or waiting on others?

I guess it's still early days for this thread to be buzzing.

If i apply now, will the letter still be valid by Sept?

Thanks.

Sorry, just read part 1of your message, should be ok then to apply for letter of good conduct.

Hi, just firm KCL yesterday. Do we need any immunisation before we go ot can we do it there? (Try to save some money, do it there is free?)

Added on April 3, 2012, 2:23 pmHi again, i guess the issue of conditional offer is resolved.
Do u think 1000pounds allowance a month in London is sufficient? My accomodation, a tiny pigeon hole will set me back 600. Balance of 400 for everything else.
*
In Australia, vaccines are not covered under the OSHC, and it's expensive! Not sure about UK. Best to bring your immunisation record, otherwise be ready for a few jabs.

Re conditional offer, rang up and they said it's fine if condition already met, and they will respond to all emails in the next two weeks, pertaining to such matters.

Congrats on KCL! I figured you would go for that. smile.gif

Are you staying in halls? Food is definitely much cheaper in the UK, and I was just doing a basic item search on tesco, and maybe asda can be cheaper if one plans well. Having said that, the decision would very likely be catered halls residence for first year medic.

elsielam, cckkpr, is the following condition pretty much standard, and is this done in Malaysia or UK?

"Receipt of enhanced Criminal Records Bureau disclosure".

I realised this is not quite the same as a "letter of good conduct".

I think is done in Malaysia.
Kings replied that they will send info about criminal check records in Aug, which means Ican't do much yet.
*
Isn't August a bit rushed? There's all this time between now and September to get everything sorted out. So are you excited yet? wink.gif

Given a choice,KCL or Monash, which one would you take ?
*
KCL or any of the Russell Group. Internship opportunity is a priority in the medium term. The 40 Singaporeans in Monash are not at all concerned about internship problems, as all are planning to go back to work. And this is just from Monash. Pretty soon the shortfall in singapore will be minimal.

the corollary of that is, as demand for internship places soften with many internationals leaving to do housemanship in other countries, the chance for places in oz will correspondingly increase.... smile.gif
*
Anything can happen in 5 years. AMSA may be able to push through new bonded places for internationals. If there are spots for internationals, even some of the singaporeans will be tempted to stay on, if prospect of living the singapore life no longer appeal to them. One good thing in VIC is that internships at present is allocated via merit, in one's respective category (locals, prs, kiwis, intls)

Thinking of using MSL Travel for flight arrangement to UK. Was informed that if booking done through them, an additional 10kg baggage allowance will be given making a total of 40kg.

Any comments or other suggested alternatives.

I noticed that once the visa is issued, there will be a start date, and student will not be able to travel to the UK before the start date on the visa.

May I know if the start date is at least a month prior to freshers week? If not, does anyone know if the start date can be brought forward, if student plans to go to UK a few weeks before term starts? OR is there an "intended travel date" in the visa application?

Thanks!

hmm so how do I book it through MSL? sorry I am very blurred.  blush.gif  I will probably need the extra luggage. One question, is it worthwhile to get a new mobile in the UK and sign the contract there, or get a new phone here and try to find the cheapest contract over there?
*
If you look at the plans from voda etc, it's cheaper to get phone + plan in the UK.

I disagree, each network offers different perks. For people who like visiting cinemas and eating pizza, Orange should be your network since it gives 2 for 1 every Wed. O2 is more international, as it has the best international rates for sms/calls. Voda is the middle ground. I use voda only because their contracts are cheaper than other networks but only good if you're going to call/SMS UK nums.

Avoid things like Lebara, much better using 3G on skype / whatsapp.

As for getting phones in M'sia. It really depends on how long your course is. If it's longer than 2 years and the network holds the phone you want, then UK is definitely the place to get it  !
*
Was just using Voda as an example as question was asked if its cheaper to get phone in Msia or get it in the UK with a plan.

How do O2 etc bundle 3G in their plans for smartphone users, especially when instant messaging like BBM / whatsapp are done on the move, in non-wifi areas. Thanks.

They get a lot of high quality applicants.

They also consider subject combination. A*A*A*A* isn't necessarily superior to A*A*AA or even A*A*A when they are selecting candidates for a particular degree. And the latter person has more than surpassed the minimum requirements, which are all that they use in conditional offers... they give out offers in rounds, sometimes before all the other offers come in. If an A*A*A looks good and they give out an offer, that's one place fewer for the A*A*A*A*a guy whose application reaches them the next day.

The examples you pointed out for UCL and Imperial are true, but note that their entry requirements for those courses are not particularly high, nor is entry particularly competitive... Economics at LSE would be more competitive than Engineering at UCL, and Biomedical Engineering has lower requirements relative to many other Engineering courses.
*
I thought there's a UCAS deadline date, and all applications are then assessed by the respective universities. Only after all applications are assessed are offers given out, by the respective unis.

Included in the estimate. Food is relatively cheap in the UK, especially if you're doing own cooking. Aberdeen will be colder!

For a start, I think uni hostels would be the best option rather than trying to get a place to stay via the Internet.
A 20 mins away from the uni may end up with a 20 mins train ride and not a 20 mins walk as imagine. Property agents have resorted to such unscrupulous acts resulting in legal action beig filed against them.
*
Agree, for a first year undergrad, Uni halls would be the better option as you will have more opportunities to make friends more easily. Residential colleges, in my opinion, would be the best but not all unis have them.

As far as rental listings are concerned, one can always verify distances, and request for more specific information before committing. Google map will also help in many instances.

Ps. MAS fares to LHR are quite competitive, surprisingly!
