It's just rumors. My guess will be even if there is 3.0 but announcement this year. Release ? Next year.

Old (and possibly inaccurate) rumours.

Well, the rumours had been circulating out there for quite some time now in regards to Gingerbread but there are no solid announcement so far. It was last said to be release by end of this year but expect it to release next year unless its a "google phone". FroYo was announced to be released in June and its now August and not all of the phones have them yet smile.gif

Smartphone has become like personal computers. OS keeps on coming out and then we need to keep on upgrading if we were to chase after it. Else, live with 2.2, it can already do a lot.

But 3.0 doesn't have the hype as much as the FroYo. What that is said so far was only a completely revamped UI for the Android which is said to be going to be better than the Sense. Other than that, nothing much since.

The faster the better ; the more varieties the better. One can never have enough of this especially if the current crop of Nexus, Desires, Galaxy S can use it

Not necessary if the phones can be upgraded - eg Nexus, Desire and Galaxy S, Droid X ( with rooting )

I doubt so. But after all it's a liabilities. You're expecting your phone to stay that value or increase over time ? Don't be silly smile.gif

One tidbits on Gingerbread. Unlike the 'news' that comes with Don, this one have a different source.

Turning our attention to tablets, Samsung is said to be prepping a 7-inch device with a front-facing camera (something we're expecting to see on pretty much all high-end smartphones and tablets going forward). Motorola, meanwhile, is apparently working on a 10-inch model -- something we've heard before -- that will feature a processor of 1GHz or better paired with Android 3.0 Gingerbread. What's notable here is that BGR's  source is saying that the inclusion of Android 3.0 could push the Moto launch out to February 2011, but inside sources of our own are reporting that tablet devices running Gingerbread are still figuring into Verizon's Q4 2010 plans, so we'll have to wait and see how that shakes out.

Talking about Android 3, I have one more remark. There will be cheap Android phones, there will be a lot of them, phones that will cost $200, EUR200

    Q. With Gingerbread?
No.  Not Gingerbread, not 3. But 2.1/2.2. For all practical purposes we will get the split – light/old hardware, cheap phones – but old Android. Want to get maximum multimedia experience:  Divx playback out of the box, support for heavy formats, lossless mp3 codecs – you have to buy powerful hardware.

    Q. And the upgrades – will they be free, or paid?
Upgrades will be free. The thing is, that not everyone will be upgraded. Droid X could be upgraded, Samsung Galaxy S… But not everyone

The time has come where older devices will be left in the dust.

why is it concern you as a user? Unless you are an android programmer. And if the update rolling out slower, it does not make the phone value depreciate slower. doh.gif

For me, the real value of the phone is its build quality and usability. Build quality can determine how long you will be using it, the better the build quality, the longer you can use it, and more value it will bring to you. The usability of course is the usefulness and function of the phone that can help/entertain you in your daily life.

My previous Treo 680 has been serving me for 3 years plus and i must say it is an excellent phone, but due to normal wear and tear, the phone function has some problem recently. So I upgraded to Desire. In the aspect of usability, the only "upgrade" for me is the Wi-Fi connectivity on Desire coz the Treo 680 does not have it to check my office email. All the other features of Desire - AMOLED screen, fast hardware, lots of softwares to choose from, etc are just the icing on the cake.

That's why I choose my next phone carefully, after research high and low and finally settle on HTC Desire. I believe it will serve me for quite some time. If there is free update in the OS - Froyo/Gingerbread/whatever, I will appreciate it but if not, I just utilise whatever I have.

Previous statements from Google did say that 3.0 (Gingerbread) will be targetted at High End Phones while the Low End ones will stick to 2.1/2.2. And minimum requirements for the Gingerbread is 1Ghz processor. Currently, there is no guarantee on which current phone will get Gingerbread (Heck, some even waited like infinitely for FroYo) but those with lower than 1Ghz processor could pretty much forget about it for now.
