Hey ppl. Just came around this new DVD player/1080p/720p with usb port( so i can connect HDD), it connects with a HDMI to my 40" hdtv. and i was told that if i play those 'fake bluray DVDs(DVD9) which is around rm13, that it would be upscaled to either 720p or 1080p to my hdtv. is this true?

and if i were to use a HD graphic card like say HD 5850, when i play DVD9s using my DVD Rom on my computer through a hdtv, will it be upscaled? to 720p or 1080p? [or there some program to download?]

and which is better? a HD Graphic Card, or a HD Media player(like WD Live), to play downloaded HD movies?

Even if you use standard DVD player , your movies will still be upscaled by your TV. But for better video clarity better to use player with HDMI output.

1) Fake Bluray or just plain simple DVD all will be upscaled to your HDTV using the DVD player (provided you set correctly)
DVD copy is just a copy of DVD.....fake Bluray is actually MKV's converted to DVD..most of the time
Fake Bluray gives better quality picture than DVD copy...but it depends.
But if you want super clear images and support the industry, get Original Bluray of course.

2) Depends on the software also..but i guess it will

3) No comment...both got followings...its like LCD Vs Plasma...most will say Plasma is better, but some will swear by LCD....so between a HTPC and a standalone Unit like WDTV live...read the forums and decide yourself..

It is time to upgrade yourself and migrate to a higher level i.e. FHD movies in MKV/TS/BDMV/ etc if HDD is the choice; or else, Bluray Disc to enjoy the full HD video. These formats now carry HD Audio as well which is non existence in DVD. Nowday, for leisure, DVDs are saved into HDD and play via PMP (Personal Media Player e.g. Divico, AC Ryan, Medexer, WD, Asus Player, Pop Corn, etc.). You can put 250 DVD9 quality movies (~8GB each with menu) into a 2TB HDD and watch until your eye balls drop.

The entry level Bluray Player (costing ~RM5xx) can do better job than any of the entry level DVD player you have. If you do not have high end CD player and Stereo Receiver, Bluray Player can produce pure / audible audio for your ears as a normal listener.

We have migrated from Tapes - VCD - LD - DVD - Bluray Disc / FHD Movies and it is a natural path to do so. New receivers now can auto calibrate your sound via Audyssey and better models are able to perform upscalling of video signal better (via Faroudja) than any DVD/Bluray players.

Time to move forward and not left behind.....................

1- If that DVD player have upscaled capability then the answers is yes.
2- It depend on software that you are used. Example of upscaled software is SimHD with TMT
3- What u mean with better? Better from picture quality, playablility, functionality or convenient? brows.gif

Added on August 10, 2010, 4:21 amwhich upscaling softwares are the best or the most user friendly to download?

will the upscale software do its job on 'extended desktop' mode?(becoz i have my default monitor[no HD], and my extended desktop/HD lcd tv[HD])

does it work on a graphic card like hd 5850??
