Taken from My-FJC forum... enjoy:
How To Use Proper Glue To Fix Your Jersey OK... Previously I know there are many people asking me in the forum or elsewhere on how to glue back any peeled off parts from your jersey. Say for example, this common issue with the Man United 2007/2009 Home jersey: ![]() A common problem with the Man United 07/09 Home Jersey... The White stripe on the back (near the collars) that peels off easily Of course, you can try re-ironing back the white stripe (flip the jersey inside out, iron press beneath the white stripe) but it sometimes doesn't work because the original glue beneath it has totally gone.. So the solution should be straight forward right? Apply glue.. Now the issue here is.. not on how do we apply the glue but what kind of glue is suitable to be used to fix it. Answer is... To look for Plastic and Rubber Adhesive Glue... or.. Polyurethene (PU) glue. A glue that is made using the same material which is PU itself.. Surely it won't be dangerous and harmful (since using Superglue or 'Gam Gajah' can cause the white stripe or PU material collateral damage since it is acidic)... I later found this glue at a stationary shop in Shah Alam (Seksyen 2): ![]() WESSBOND Plastic Rubber & Shoe Adhesive & a brush to be used later ![]() WESSBOND Plastic Rubber & Shoe Adhesive ![]() The glue costs RM3.90 only ![]() Features of the glue... ![]() It states that it can be used to bond PU leather....so it's useful for PU type materials on the jersey ![]() Useful because it is waterproof, heat & weather resistant and it is clearly meant as a polyurethane (PU) glue.. also it clearly states... "DO-IT-YOURSELF" repair jobs.. which is what I like So this is the glue that I will use as my experiment to fix the white stripe on the back of my 2007-2009 Man United home jersey. So what I did was I put some of the glue onto a piece of paper (in this case, the cardboard paper from the glue's packaging): ![]() Then, using a brush that I bought, I took some of the glue from the cardboard paper: ![]() Then i carefully swabbed the glue using the brush beneath the white stripe.. Sorry I forgot to take photos during this procedure..but I think you get the idea. Then I placed a paper on top of the area where I placed glue.. and then stacked a big heavy book on top of the paper (to press and bond the glue that was just applied). I then leave it for 10 minutes. Again.. I forgot to take photos.. sorry. To be continued.. |

Continued..
Here is the result: ![]() ![]() I then leave it for 1 day so that the glue is 100% bonded and dried. The next day I washed the jersey and tested to see if the glue was still strong and intact. The results were positive. It bonded well.. and when I tested the strength by touch and by doing this: ![]() The PU stripe is confirmed to be bonded very well.. Yippeee! Previously I tried using super glue or gam gajah. It failed.. why? It caused the white stripe to melt.. because the glue is acidic. Of course you can use it to bond velvet/felt or lextra materials (namesets/badges) but it will cause the surface of the jersey to be stiff hard like plastic, no thanks to the glue. But the usage of the WESSBOND glue not only doesn't ruin or melt the PU stripe, but also it doesn't make the jersey's surface become stiff or hard.. you can bend it like what is seen in the photo above. Although this glue was meant for bonding PU materials, I believe that it can also be used to bond velvet/felt or lextra materials as well for your jersey. Haven't tested it yet, will update this guide later if nature calls... but my initial suspect is that it will... Now.. another useful DIY that this glue can help.. is to prevent your old retro jerseys's foam embossed sponsors/materials to peel off. I used to own a retro man united adidas 90-92 home shirt. I rarely wore it and left it hanging in my room. To my horror I found my retro shirt's foam embossed SHARP sponsors being dirty and effected with stains looking like... fungus! ![]() My retro 1990-1992 Man United Home Jersey ![]() Close up view of the foam embossed SHARP sponsors.. oh no! ![]() Close up view of the foam embossed SHARP sponsors.. ![]() Close up view of the foam embossed SHARP sponsors.. From the photos.. you can see that not only it turns up with some strange brown stains (fungus) but also some of the letters (R and P) has cracks on the edges and might possibly be peeled off later.. Now... I have to fix 2 things here.. How to remove the dirty stains and how to safeguard and protect my jersey's SHARP sponsors from peeling off later. First problem was solved thanks to my favourite detergent... Vanish Power O2: ![]() My savour for the day.. Vanish Power O2 Next, I soaked my shirt (only the part where the sponsors were), put in warm water and poured some Vanish Power O2 detergent in it.. later some foam and white bubbles will appear.. which is when the detergent is doing what it is suppose to do: ![]() Soaking the shirt into the Vanish Power O2 detergent.. and you can see my favourite plastic brush on the top (inside the photo) I leave the shirt being soaked for 1-2 hours.. longer better.. Continued..
Then I rinsed with water and brushed using my plastic brush.. I finally managed to brush off all the dirty stains: ![]() ![]() Now.. although the SHARP sponsors are cleaned.. I am worried looking that the cracked around the letters: ![]() So I need to put some glue beneath the sponsors to ensure that it is bonded better and hope that the sponsors won't come off easily.. so what I did was I used the WESSBOND glue to ensure that... First, after I washed the jersey previously, I spin dried it and flip the jersey inside out. I then iron press it to ensure that it is dried and bonded: ![]() Then.. I used the WESSBOND glue that I bought earlier... used a brush and put some of the glue at the areas where the SHARP sponsors are: ![]() ![]() Luckily I was good in arts during my school days.. so it wasn't a problem.. ![]() The first letter that I successfully re-applied glue with... Finally... I've covered all areas: ![]() Leave it to dry for few days.. Today, I'm pretty confident that the delicate SHARP sponsors on my retro man united shirt will not peel off easily... .at least. So anyway, if you want to use glue to fix your jersey... to glue your peeled off white PU stripe on the Man United shirt.. or other materials such as the nameset or badge... Look for a glue that is similar to the one I got here.... Hope it helps! This post has been edited by schmeichel7: Oct 27 2010, 11:42 PM |

Sometimes a trusted seller can become a villain overnight. You can never be too careful about this. |
