H264 codec is suitable to compress HD movie. That way HD movie always use MKV extension.

mkv (Matroska) is a container format, not a codec icon_rolleyes.gif , just like avi it can contain any codec

its features are :
* Fast seeking in the file
* Chapter entries
* Full metadata (tags) support
* Selectable subtitle/audio/video streams
* Modularly Expendable
* Error resilience (can recover playback even when the stream is damaged)
* Streamable over the internet and local networks (HTTP, CIFS, FTP, etc)
* Menus (like DVDs have)

4.37gb 720p and 10gb 1080p MKV is seriously not same as Bluray quality...

Depends on the equipment you use also to spot the difference

But 40gig MKV and 40gig Bluray same quality 1:1 smile.gif

mkv can have smaller size also between 1 to 2 GB.. It's meant for low quality 720p movie.. quality is like divx movies or better but this one is 720p.

I usually download this one (also called mHD or m720p or micro hd) as I don't really care about video quality.. but I like to enjoy the 5.1 AC3 audio..

720p and 1080p depends on the TV display, if you are using HD only TV, the difference is insignificant...but if you are using FULLHD display, can only see minor difference in sharpness..

But, for 1080p (10gb stuff) Vs Bluray....the difference is a lot even though the panel is FullHD or HD only. Most significant is the dark areas...Bluray has more details that can be noticed

Actually for the 1080p to near equal the Bluray, just play around with the sharpness and contrast / brightness level on the TV
Thats the problem, after we calibrate the TV, when play 1080pmkv atau Bluray, the setting are different...trouble is, even if same title mkv, the encoder might be different, so some dark, some bright, some more sharp etc.
So usually have to use 'Custom 1' '2' settings on the TV.

worth every penny. at least for some people.
never have the need to go to the movies anymore. why visit the cinema when the picture and audio quality is better at home? not to mention can stop, pause, crank the volume up and down, change seating position, eat kfc while watching, pause and tend the crying son and... re-watch any movies again.

RM70 for each movie is worth every penny considering i need to burn at least RM50 for each visit to the cinema. biggrin.gif

MKV container still have a problem to support HD audio like DTS-HD/TrueHD.
Maybe we'll need a new container that better than MKV to support that one.

Last time when i watch Clash of The Titan at GSC tropicana, the PQ is really worst.
When i come again for new movies (sorcerers apprentice), the PQ is great. Maybe they don't service their projector that day.

and that if the wife doesn't find something that she likes. if should accidentally stumble upon a 'cheap' RM200 'on sale' pair of shoes and home does seem like a more enticing place to be in. hehe biggrin.gif

I prefer download MKV movies than buying BD's ...BD's totally out of my budget...just get a rapidshare and hotfile account (will cost you about rm65 per month) and can download as much as you want ... also there is torrent where u can download for free but will take days to finish download big files.... Just get a Media Player to play your MKV files...if you want better sound quality there are lots of surround sound setings in AVR's ...just choose the 1 u like ...may be its not 100% good as DTS HD or D.D True HD....but still can get better surround sound if u have onkyo or denon avr with quality speakers and woofers..

Or you can go for a DVD's (dont buy dvd's fr the guys selling at the mamak stalls or pasar malam) ...... i have about 300 movies in dvds and almost all of them are very good quality and can decode 5.1 DTS and 5.1 D.Digital...and it cost me about rm8-6 per DVD. Now days there are double layer dvd's too, which is compress version of BD's and the quality and price is also not that bad.

that's what we call aspect ratio (AR)..
different movie, different AR..

16:9 is the standard for HDTV (without black bar)

and yet most of the bluray and mkv (which is also compressed from bluray) are in 1.85:1 and 2.39:1 format which will have the black bar on the top and bottom because the video is wider than 16:9

so a larger screen is better at displaying it because you don't have to zoom.

that's normal dude..nothing you can do..

if you don't want black bar, home theater projector is the way to go..
the black bar on the top and bottom is less noticeable

for one, it's rm20K
secondly, most of the material you have will be 1.85:1 or narrower which means 90% of the time you'll have pillar boxes.

I don't think Philips expected to sell a lot of these; it was just a matter of saying "there, we can do it"

that's normal dude..nothing you can do..

if you don't want black bar, home theater projector is the way to go..
the black bar on the top and bottom is less noticeable
*
well we can zoom it. that will remove the black bar at the expense of cropping the left and right picture.
think i'll go with a larger screen rather than projector at the living room.

If 2TB not enough, then you should consider to get NAS with 8-10TB. tongue.gif

not hot. not noisy. no fan noise could be heard 3 feet away from the casing.
and of course no noise could be heard when the a movie is playing at 85dB.

the htpc with all hdd running is quieter than my aircond running above my head.

How did you manage to powerup 13hdd with a single power supply for your HTPC? Or did you do up a simple circuit to distribute the power?

a truepower PSU rated at around 500W should be able to power all the hdd. i'm using mostly samsung 5400rpm drives and those only require about 10W per drive.
i'm running 10 drives with a trupower 450W PSU and the voltage rails are still stable.

guys, i believe questions about my htpc should be inside the htpc thread. let's move discussions there shall we

Am new to this forum.
Over the last few mths, I have copied around 4.5TB of movies from my friends, they are mainly 720p but with several 1080p ones. Size ranges from 4gb to 13gb. Currently, watching these movies using Dvico HD N1 (Cafe) connected to my Toshiba 42ZV600 FHD LCD tv.

I am trying to compare the PQ and AQ of these downloaded movies with:

1) non ori blue-ray movies which can be purchased in KL (not prepared to pay for the exorbitant price of originals).
2) rented ori blue-ray movies.

If the non ori movies or rented ori movies are much better then will consider purchasing a cheap BDP (eg. Philips BDP 3100)

Any comments from the sifus?

I was thinking if the USB cable is insufficient power to carry such larger data.. How fast data transfer rate does it require? How much its capable of? The player can play BD 1080p well.. How to solve this problem as I am trying to cut cost buying the BD... I am now practicing a share policies where my colleagues and I exchange the mkv..

Should not be problem of using USB2 as it is capable of maximum 480MBit/s and majority of the media players are using it for common connectivity if not all....

Last time I tried with the 7000 series, it plays MKV perfectly including 1080p version of Iron Man.

But it can't decode DTS tracks and sadly the Asia version doesn't have optical audio out so you can't even bitstream it to your AVR.

Not sure about the newer models, I know overseas some can handle DTS directly and the rest have optical out.

because IMHO it's not worth go that route. MKV with TrueHD/DTSHDMA are already 20GB+
an uncompressed bluray files (m2ts or bdmv) with removed bonus tracks, commentary tracks, extra audio leaving only the movie itself (uncompressed) and TruHD/DTSHDMA (uncompressed) is only 25-30GB a movie. a difference of only a few gigs.

better to go uncompressed everything.

TrueHD audio file only is just 4GB. If combine with 8GB 1080p AVC, I think it MKV file is should not more than 15GB.

try and look for MKV with lossless track and see for yourself. lots that i find are more than 20GB.
lots of high bitrate MKV with an average bitrate of more than 10Mbps with DTS track is already more than 10GB.
