Hey I'm new here smile.gif was just about to ask if anybody plays GW lol when I saw this thread. biggrin.gif

I've been playin it on and off for a couple of months now (very busy schedule). On my first character; and Elementalist/Ranger *nods to avatar* dats him: Seth Raad, da pyromancer.

So far I'm really enjoying the game, I'm only half way through level 14 and currently am just enjoyin some casual pvp @ Shiverspeak Arena lol its lotsa fun and I'm really startin to learn about the strategy aspect of the game. the PvP aspect is really fast and furious when ur playin against seasoned players... not wat I expect from a MMO; but then again, this is my first MMORPG so...

Anyways I look forward to sharing insights and strategies. I'm pretty new to this so mostly I'll just read and learn. I'm waitin for a friend of mine to get her copy so I can start a new character. Thinkin of makin it a Warrior/Monk or a Warrior/Necro depending on her choice...

/end rant for now hehe smile.gif hope to see some of y'all online. I tend to rant a lot on the ingame chat, so I'm pretty hard to miss.

Peace

zaakath: I ain't paying so I don't mind laugh.gif

Anyway was playing some comp arena just now... Brought in a smiter monk... biggrin.gif

Pretty fun with some interesting groups (One group had 3 monks and one necro with another consisiting of 3 monks and a ranger) The former totally owned coz we had a healer/prot monk and another healer... Quite a streak going on, but was interrupted when the healer/prot monk left... sad.gif
*
LOL okay I'm gonna keep this short; as I was rantin aobut this all night in Shiverspeak:

I-hate-monks vmad.gif

LOL okay they are kewl as long as they are on my team but if they are on the opposing team I make it my business to snuff em out asap.

It's actually a pretty good (and obvious) strategy, and works most of the time. Second on my hitlist elementalists and finally rangers. The necros are a mystery to me tho, and I try to avoid mesmers as I've found soem really good players that just manage to render me useless on the battlefeild.

But those monks man, they really jerk my chain lol. They can turn warriors into unstopabble tanks; and make dead enemies that u spent all ur energy pwning pop back up like dasies in spring time...

hate em man! lol

They are valuable allies tho tongue.gif I might make my next character a healer just to piss ppl off tongue.gif

Don't hate me though.. I'm a Mo/E.. that makes me 1st &2nd on your list. I tried PvP and true enough, I was the first to be attacked. Hmm.. Monks' attacks aren't fatal what (against warriors though)..  sad.gif  We are just the 'innocent' ones who're trying to help others (guarding their life... biggrin.gif )

Anyway, I'm far away from completing the storyline.. but already contemplating my 2nd character's profession.. hmm...
*
LOL "innocent" tongue.gif one time I was in PVP @ Shiverpeak Arena, and I saw this one monk hiding behind a rock healing all the other players.. totally out of harms way and keepin all his teammates good and healthy. LOL of course I was playin with a bunch of n00bz, who wouldn't heed my calls or aid me. So I tried my best to keep the monk busy until... well... until my entire team got creamed and they all came for me tongue.gif lol

I hate monks so much I'm gonna make it part of my next build wink.gif Maybe a Elementalist/Monk... since Elementalists have nice energy storage... *ponders* or maybe a Necro/Monk... we'll see...

I haven't had the chance to play GW in a while tho. Finished the frost gate coop mission and I'm 98% way to level 15... resting at Beacon's Perch, and thinkin about how I'm gonna spend those new Attrib points.

These coop missions are tons of fun, but I find them disorienting as I always end up apart of a team whose players are all on there third/fourth characters and know the missions by heart. Leaving me stuck in a very fast paced/surgical mission with lil chance of exploration or even enjoying the story... ah the price of easy xp wink.gif I'm definitly lookin forward to some solo exploration when I reach level 20...

BTW although GW plays like a charm on my 56k dialup, I like to play at my net cafe. In case anybody is wondering all I had to do was just copy the directory of the game onto my portable USB harddisk, and play it straight off of there; no installations or additional setting up necessary smile.gif GW is pure genious IMO

Those are some sweet pics biggrin.gif I've always been partial to oriental armor. What would be sweet is if they expanded the armor style to include armor/clothes from all cultures (Asian/African/Native American) in addition to the Europhantasy armor. It would really liven up the game and make it stand out more IMO...

Just out of curiosity; is there a way to make a weapon take advantage of different attributes from different classes:

For example, the bow increases damage with increased marksmanship. Is there a component I could add to make it take advantage of fire magic as well? Say, shoot fire arrows or something?

I'm interested as a E/R, and I find the bow to be "cooler" than teh fire wand; not to mention that currently my bow does more damage (11-19) while my wand only does (7-9).

R/E works better if u wanna be a fire archer. Most of the time.. eles don't do standard attack anyway.  flex.gif

BURNNNNN
*
Why would R/E work better? Either way I just spend attribpoints on marksmanship, right?

I know Elementalists dont use standard attack, but sometimes I like to save my energy for the more expensive spells, and use standard attacks while I recharge.. at least until I find the Fire Attunement spell... The flare sometimes sucks away when I need it most...

So how do I get fire damage for the bow? Is there a special item I need to find or is it just a matter of finding that special bow?

I'm thinkin later on I might switch from Fire to air... but I wanna wait till I get some traps to decide; I tend to use my elementalist powers for offence and the ranger's more passive abilites (such as rapid healing and such). Right now the only ranger attrib I'm using is wilderness survival. I took all the marksmanship points and fed it into Earth Magic, cuz I couldn't find a decent bow...

Refund points are a bliss...

if i'm not mistaken the upgrade component you need is a fiery bow string
so you need a bow without any string mods and upgrade it with the fiery string
i have an ebon bow string if you want
*
Thanks for the tip, gotta find me some firey bow string tongue.gif

I'm gonna pour most of the new attrib points into fire magic, but so far I cant seem to find any new fire skills :S

Hey does marksmanship attrib by any chance increase the distance u can shoot arrows? Just curious cuz in some battles I've been hit by rangers who can attack me, yet are out of range of my attacks... maybe its because they were on higher ground? blink.gif

Pyromaniac Ele/Ranger, I would suggest you to use AoE, knockdown and some Wilderness support survival spells. Good for crowd control. I prefer holding a staff or wand along with flame artifact than bow coz you will get more useful ele bonus from them. But of course, Bows do look much cooler.

Ranger Arsonist R/E, i put most of my points equally in marksmanship, wilderness and expertise. The remaining will be in fire skills for conjure flame and rodgort. This build is only good 1vs1 tho
*
Thanks for the advice rEDs, Delirium, and LiQuiDWaVe biggrin.gif found ur posts most informative.

Some thoughts:

First of all I had no idea that the bow-type served anything more than asthetics... Glad I kept my short bow, and long bow as well biggrin.gif

Currently I use a fire wand and flame artifact that increases my energy. My line up is:

- Aura of Restoration
- Flare
- Glyph of Lesser Energy
- Phoenix
- Armor of Earth
- Ward against Foes
- Lava Font
- Fire Storm

Basically I use the flare as my "standard attack" to soften em up, and wait for the enemies to cluster before I use my AOE attacks, reserving Earth Magic for defensive purposes (I find the ward against foes to work really well with the AOE against warriors). I found this strategy generally works with most team setups (I tend to carry the Troll Unguent instead of the glyph for PVP)...

I got the ranger because I figured I could use his powers to "manipulate the environment" back when I really didn't have a clue what the ranger's powers were. Now I realize that includes nature rituals and traps, which is what I would focus on for the ranger. Just waitin to get a hold of some of those powers, I figure with a few good traps on my belt, coupled with some of the more powerful AOE fire magic attacks, and I'll be pretty deadly...

So eventually my attribute points would be focused on:

Elementalist: Fire Magic, Earth Magic, Energy Storage
Ranger: Marksmanship and Wilderness Survival

It's not as focused as some setups, but I like flexibility... I can always use my refund points to focus a bit later on.

Later on I would like to experiment with other combos: Air Magic/Beast Mastery perhaps? I found that pets can be a welcomed distraction. I find them annoying when I hit "C" to look for the closest enemy only to find myself wasting my energy on some rangers pet lol...

My skills lineup are a bit different...

-Flare
-Phoenix
-Fireball
-Firestorm
-Meteor
-Meteor Shower
-Glyph Of Lesser Energy
-Resurrection Signet

Well i'm only limited to 7 skills actually.Never leave home without a ress siggie..
Heh  thumbup.gif
*
That's a dangerous layout bro biggrin.gif Hey where can I buy the rezz signet? I don't have one, and would just like to keep it handy...

Oh btw my skillset changed, was on the Villainy of Galrath Quest (400XP w00t!) and this dude helped me find the Meteor Shower biggrin.gif So now my layout is:

- Conjure Flame
- Aura of Restoration (these two together give me extra damage on my base attack + health restoration as long as I spam with the flare)

- Flare
- Fireball
- Glyph of Lesser Energy (might take this out when I get more energy, currently @ 60)
- Phoenix
- Meteor Shower
- Fire Storm

I feel kinda bad that my secondary occupation (Ranger) isn't even getting used now... waitin to find a few traps...

I find that there are a lot of pyros out there, so I might wait until I get some more earth magic skills and switch to geo.. or maybe hydro... I Like playing as a supporting character; and usually will just use my AOE attacks to help the warriors out, leaving the direct attacks for any stragglers that get too close.

I wonder, if I did the Villany quest a few times, would I get xp everytiem I did it? if so dang! lol I could just do that quest until I reached lvl 20 then explore the rest..

And snap! lol I played a round in the competition arena; everybody there was a lvl 20... nothing I did could phase anybody; I'm gonna revisit that place when I'm lvl 20 hehe...

Thoughts?

now my blacks are worth like 5,000 at the trader
and people who bought ectoplasms for 300g are now waaay richer than me
all my farming time gone to waste...dumbass patch in my opinion
*
Dats really smart man, I'm a MMORPG n00b and u've just taught me about farming smile.gif

Luckily I sold my silver dye to the trader (upon advice from a friend) for 1,200 a couple of days ago w00t! Never thought of selling stuff to traders lol this is uber...

QUOTE
i doubt you can do that quest for few times, coz galrath won't be there after you kill him..

the difficult part of this mission is the journey to the hill where galrath is standing. it's full of level 20 monsters. you have to take on them slowly and group by group, no rushing or else you get aggro. galrath himself is a piece of cake once you reach the hill.

What if I join ppl who request for help? will I get the xp then? biggrin.gif

I wanna do it partially cuz of the xp... but also cuz the quest was by far the funnest quest yet biggrin.gif And I played with a really uber group, and we meshed so well... I love being the pyro that helps out the warriors hehe, but when I got to Galrath's area I was almost always the primary target, so I died a few times :S aw well...

also on a staff that has 8% chance for improving skill recharge (all skills)

What does this feature mean exactly? IF something has a % chance, wat does it mean?

Also wat is the max damage for any given weapon?

*sigh*

Right now I'm stuck in a rut and need more xp :S I hate having a secondary profession that I'm not using yknow, right now I'm focusing on energy storage/fire magic... and not even using any of my Ranger skillz :S

is that bad?

My second character is a warrior/mesmer biggrin.gif haven't acended yet with my first (ele/ranger) but my gf just got GW so I'm accompanying her thru the pre-searing.

I still play my lvl 17 ele/ranger every now and then; just takin my time and enjoyin the game. It's fun; can't wait to get to lvl 20 so I can focus on pvp...

Anyway, I picked Warrior/Mesmer cuz I liked the idea of the Mesmers line of interrupts/counters, and thought a warrior could benifit from that; as well as mesmers energy stealing/denial capabilities...

Necro/Mesmer sounds uber tho, I've never played either; planin to save the necro for either a necro/monk or ranger/necro build... so I would be interested in seeing how ur build would play out.

I imagine ur build would be more of a support character, aiding other characters with curses to debuff the enemy and increase ur teams damage on them; and keeping the spell casters down with interrupts, and energy stealing/denial... thoughts?

That's the general idea the way I see it anyways; as for actual specifics, I'm still explorin on myself...

you DO know that when you put an upgrade on a weapon, you can use another upgrade of the same type and it'll just overwrite the old one?

i don't understand why people keep yelling "Buy(or sell)> uber sword, clean!". the guild wars system of weapon upgrades make the term "clean" obsolete.
*
Yknow imo I just dont get it. Why sell/buy weapons for obscene amount of gold when u can just go and explore for it? I mean okay, some items are really rare I get it; but speakin as a guy who hasn't done much gold farming (I dont have the time to spend hours farming), asking me to drop 7k for a sword pommel or watever is a joke... I'd much rather explore and get it as a drop for free... just as u did...

Not that I'm dissin anybody or anything, and I'm sure there are players with the gold to spare but... I just find the high prices a lil... much... yknow?

One guy was askin minimum 70k for this Gold Earth/Fire magic wand; as an ele I could have used it; but dang! 70K? lol I'll go explore for it thanks...

I just get the impressions that ppl are just gettin too greedy now :S

QUOTE(Koross @ Sep 7 2005, 09:23 AM)
That is partly correct. There are uber hard stats to get on a max damage weapon (or offhand for that matter) just by wishing that it would drop. Although most people do look for the max suffix and prefix modifier, the smart buyers are usually looking for items with the sought after max additional modifiers (ie +15% damage >50% hp that you can't get from collector's). The said item is even more pricey if its on a rare item (ie fellblade, fiery sword). Usually the famous ones are the stats you get on shields (ie hp+20-30, received damage-1/-2 while in stance/enchanted) since you can't upgrade shields and only hope for drops. But some people are really lucky on their drops and they get godly items (godly terms are usually used when there are more than 1 maxed stat on the said item). Another matter to take into consideration is supply and demand. For instance, there aren't many people who have max vampiric bow string and are not using it. Which is why, if they sell, they usually do so at a very high price.

Anyway, if you want to check out on item modifiers (if you want to know if its maxed or not), you can do so here: http://www.gwonline.net/page.php?p=125
*
ah I get it. I guess at my stage of the game, I neither have the gold nor the need for such high items lol. But so far I've managed to find items that reflect my skill level (or attrib level of whatever abilities required) from drops. My philosophy is "If they can obtain it in a drop, so can I"... but I guess once I level up, and need that extra oomph for PVP really quick, I'll come cryin to the merchant players lol

It is interesting to see the uber looking weapons up close tho. I'm just takin aback at the high prices... who sets the going rates anyway? I mean when somebody says "Gold 'insert weapon here' CHEAP" Then hits me with a 7k price tag lol how do I know I'm not being cheated?

Thanks for the link btw, this is really helpful smile.gif

QUESTION:

I've seen some players with glowy, lightsabre-like, axes: The entire axe is white, with a colored aura (I've seen blue and red versions). Is this a weapon upgrade? Also can I find it for swords? LOL as a Starwars fan I'd love to have it for my sword-warrior LOL

Happy huntin'

LOOL

Ah so the coolness is reserved for the axe warriors... hrmph! tongue.gif

Well my Warrior/Mesmer (2nd character) is still a n00b: Pre-searing, waitin for my gf so we can finish her quests and start Charr huntin smile.gif I wanna at least get to level 12 before I move on.

My ele/ranger tho is lvl 17, might play with him a bit later and see if I can get to 18 before the night's up...

Can I play the new missions even tho I'm not ascended? Or do I need to be ascended in order to play; like the underworld etc.

Y'know, about the new patch upsetting farmers; imo I don't see wat the big deal is. I mean, there's more to the game than l007 hording right? According to IGN's review the missions are indeed fun to play, and after all... isn't that what GW is about? The fun missions?

So although its easier for the casual player to get some l337 items (yay for us!), the hardcore fans should still be able to enjoy the new content. I'm personally excited; and providing GW sticks to its business model and level of quality, they got themselves a dedicated fan in me smile.gif

BTW I love the little tweaks they did to the map, mini-map and quest logs... Now if they would only make it so the henchmen bantered with each other and respond to certain keyword hehe...

Well I'm not much of a farmer, and since I'm only level 17 (40% to level 18 yea!) It's a huge challange to even adventure alone, especially in the Kryta region where all the lvl 11 and up baddies are (a mob of fire imps are a real pain).

I tried the "reversing skale" mission, and kept getting pwnd by those huge lvl 18 guards... went out shortly with a party and we mopped the floor with them, go figure tongue.gif

I'm lovin' the new chest system, with the key. Although so far the items I got were useless to me (I wish I could get some good ele drops, instead of necro/monk drops); at least they are salvagable/sell-able. So I've seen a huge jump in the amount of gold I've been able to save, I raked up 1k in one gaming session (trust me, that's a lot for a guy who doesn't farm).

One thing I really like tho is NO MORE REFUND POINTS! I think this is a really smart move, as it really gives one the freedom to just experiment with skills and combos they might have been hesitant to waste their precious refund points on. It also gives one the flexibility to make radical build changes on the fly; without worrying about "what if I don't like this, and I'm stuck with it until I get enough refund points"...

Anyways I haven't really explored much tho, plan to take some henchies out for some explorin tonight, if I have the time. I wanna take a break from questin to just level up a bit and see what's out there... Can't wait to ascend so I can explore the new content lol... not that I'm bored with the old stuff wink.gif

Hey I have a question:

Is there any rules to the success/failure of salvaging enhancments from weapons?

I get 100% on armor (I'm told this is the case), however it is a regular hit and miss with weapons, for example:

- Lost firestring on a bow >_<
- Had 100% success rate with swords: Pommles and hilts... until yesterday when I found a crappy sword with two great enhancements... lost them both >_<

I promised myself that I wouldn't try to salvage anything again until I got at least 2 of the same enhancements... are there any factors that can help raise ur success rate in-game? Like salvaging in certain cities or something?

Help? I got several good enhancements that I would liek to remove from their weaker weapons to apply to stronger "clean" weapons... afraid to do so cuz I might just end up with more iron/wood >_<

LOL dammit... that's a really bad (and diabolically funny) story, huh.

So are there any ways to know when you will succeed, and when you will fail? OR is it just luck.

BTW I submitted this question to the Guildwars official help desk, so I'll post the reply here... this issue is really bugging me, and making me one nervous "farmer".

I mean, shoot... I rarely happen upon l337 upgrades. And when I do... I lose em to "bad luck"?

Well I guess its official since the GW official help line said they couldn't extend their help...

I had some very good luck btw last gaming session. Was salvaging sword pommles left and right, updating my inventory with stronger swords, and some axes... my warrior is going to be in for a treat when he reaches searing.

Now... if I only had the same luck with wands/staffs >_>
