That's the model prior to the revamp by the Australians which then propelled the Ranger to it's current status today. My friend owned an XLT years back, maintenance is similar to most any Japanese pickups back then. I have a Hilux 2011 and the cost of maintenance is not beyond expectations; both had minimal electronics (compared to today's standard of electonic automation), serviceable things like change engine oil, fIlter, brake pads, gear oil, etc all at normal regular intervals, much like a sedan I guess, nothing that'll blow you away.

In terms of reliability, both work as they are intended to. Thrashing a pickup in the jungle terrain doesn't count, as this would then depend on the terrain, driver skills and luck, ie bad luck hit big rock - too bad, no undercarriage is invincible, but otherwise, normal day to day driving, nothing detrimental that I have personally come across.

1. check the milage
2. check the service records at Toyota service center
3. check with insurance for any accident
4. check with jpj/traffic for any accident/summons.
5. look for rust
6. make sure the engine bay not modified(unless stated by seller)
7. look for loose bolt and nut
8. test the 4x4 if it is working, those cost alot to fix
9. test drive to make sure the gearbox is okay
