The coming firmware, within 2 - 3 weeks, will improve the booting time.

if any lag will be improved, that's a great welcome!

seriously, i have 3 people in the house plugging in/out the 2 AC Ryans, watch whatever and whenever they want. so far, all are happy, no serious grievance of any sort. i personally would prefer larger character fonts on the gui2.0 (old gui ok) since they come out rather smaller on a small tv.

one thing i am quite sure it helps in reducing bugs and lag time - deleting unwanted or suspected corrupt files, periodically perform disk cleanup on all hdds in use.

i just connected unifi wired (not wireless) to the pohd1 with gui2.0.

i got internet radio shoutcast to work for once, then lost it.
i got youtube page showing the static pics but can't get the videos to show.
i got to the bit torrent page but it show only "download" but no neighbor web as described in the old manual, can't find the page to key in links to download and monitor stuff.

my settings wrong, I'm sure. so far, i have done:
. activated wired lan, ip address shown
. under ftp, keyed in the username and password of the network
. "on" for bt, samba

what did i miss? appreciate some assistance. thanks a lot.

bb, thanks for tip on new firmware for POHD: Firmware_PV73100_v7.4.3.r5440_Asian
Installed it earlier and got encouraging results! thumbup.gif

.youtube now works perfect.

.bit torrent is working now - key was to do as per instruction (quoted in last post), apply the right torrent file. a little surprised that with wired lan, it appears slow compared to doing it wireless from pc. is it possible there are some upgrades that i haven't done? read in old manual there is some "extension info" to be ungraded by usb like firmware. is this still applicable since i couldn't find that "extension info" option in the new gui now...?

. shoutcast still not working... when try to "station" download, message "fail" appears. any tip?

i think many acryan users are not using these features. after 2 yrs, i decided to use them and see how useful. not disappointed so far, but wish a comprehensive manual is available.. hope will be once the gui is complete, bugs fixed.

btw, firmware r5440 is good - can see most of the grievances of the last version now fixed, including screen saver, autoscan. i didn't experience any lag this time even with the autoscan on - good! new features incl hdd spindown after 5, 15, 30 min, create shortcuts...

if u mean played thru acryan or any media player for that matter, no problem for any tv.
if you mean w/o media player direct to tv, then wrong thread to ask since it depends on the tv.

been toying around with firmware 5440 on pohd with unifi hardwired, wireless with pc and found:

good
. can get shoutcast radio, youtube, mediafly, podcasts - excellent
. can do wireless streaming from pc to pohd/tv for mp3 and photos
. can do wireless streaming from pc to pohd/tv for smaller file video files only (think limited by the my wireless network speed)
. can downld direct onto pohd via btorrent but need to be controlled on pc; speed not as fast as on pc

bad
. hdd spindown feature is good to prolong hdd life but once it spins down, it takes a while to get back up or even hang
. when in internet media (e.g. radio), press 'return" button to stop; pressing "stop" button can cause it to hang
. do not plug/unplug another hdd when pohd is on - it may hang or reboot - maybe it's due to nas connection; last version 3966 was fine
. while toying around, i encountered one serious problem so far - it kept rebooting non-stop - had to reload firmware 3582->4824->3966->5440

boxbuilder, maybe you can pass this on to acryan people.

maybe the chip in pohd is getting stretched with so many of these new features. if i run into more trouble, i'll go back to 3966 and wait for next upgrade.

overall, i am still very pleased with what this machine is capable of doing. smile.gif

Bro, get your message and thanks for your input. I will pass these valuable message to Eugene. Thanks again.

boxb, i encountered the non-stop rebooting problem again today. after the 2nd incident, i narrowed the cause to two possible resaons:
1. there is a bug in the "copy" function (it was fine with 3966). on the pohd, both incidents happened right after copying from ext hdd to the pohd - 1st time was from a 2tb hdd, the 2nd from a portable 500gb hdd. on both occasions, file copied was <10gb, so it shouldn't be a files size problem.
2. my portable hdd drive may have some corrupted files that's causing it: using the mini with 5440 upgraded, the same problem (mini kept rebooting non-stop) happened when i plugged in that portable hdd, but no problem wiith the 2tb hdd. however, that suspected corrupted portable hdd works fine with pohd!!

i can't be sure of #2 because i tried something else - mini connected to tv direct, bypassed the avr. in this setup, no problem at all, all hdds played smoothly. puzzling...

hope you can pass this additional info on to the right guys. meanwhile i just dun use copying function, dun use that portable hdd on the mini for now.

thanks for the tip!
i scanned all hdds, none showed errors.
after scanning, the earlier problem did not happen again:

tested all hdds on both pohd and mini with 5440 - all are fine with playback, will test the copy function later and let you know.
if it is in fact one disk error causing it, that means we must scan/fix hdds regularly! again, thanks for tip.

i copied a small file from pc to the scanned/fixed portable hdd, copied that file from that hdd to the pohd hdd.
right after copying, playback of the file in the pohd saw the same problem - pohd kept rebooting non-stop.
reloaded firmware 3582->4824->3966->5440, file on pohd could play normal.

now i am convinced there is a bug in the copy function. pls check and let me know, tq.
btw, my pohd has board 1073DD, samsung built in hdd.

Then I go back playing the previous track I have listened to - surprisingly not able to play anymore and also the rest of the FLACs until I turn on and off the unit again!

Anyone experience the same? Or the unit has some FLAC file specification limitation?

yes, i hv come across this.
not sure but i suspect the older firmwares may not be as good as the new.
after upgrading to the latest firmware, i did not encounter it again.

yrs is an esssential, so best you check if it has the latest fiirmware. if not, downld and upgrade:

Hi Bro here,
Is ACRyan POHD Essential consider POHD [2] as you all mentioned?
I refer to the official web, the firmware for Essential is only up to 22-02-2011, however for HD Mini 2 is up to 12-08-2011. Seeing a lot of bugs fixes in HD Mini 2, wonder is that fixed in Essential as well? Or is actually 2 different thing?
Is Essential on GUI 2 ?
Planing to get Essential as I no need the network, but just wonder other than network function, is the rest of the function and the quality about the same as HD mini 2? Worth buying?  hmm.gif

Thanks in advance.  notworthy.gif
*
pohd was the first model, has space for built in hdd
mini was the first model w/o built in hdd
pohd2 was second model with a better chipset
mini2 is pohd2 w/o built in hdd
all models may have slightly dfferent chipset grade as well as tech improves, like in a pc.
pohd2 and mini2 were sold with gui2.

essential is less frills version, lower priced. comes with gui2, i believe.
chipset, firmware.. better wait for boxb to come in!

can read a lot more here:

Thanks AVFAN. That means Essential is pohd first model, only pohd2 and mini2 is on 2nd model, and Essential is different chipset grade with pohd2. Quality wise is there different a lot? I no need network, but wonder is pohd2 and mini2 much better in term of quality other than network features?

With the SATA 3.5 hdd in, will it cause lot of heat? As we know 3.5 hdd generate lot of heat. Do understand that, Essential with build in fan, is the box still hot? and will it cause unstable if is hot?

Thanks.
*
apologies for some of my error - Essential has a builtin hdd...
i have only the pohd and mini, have seen the mini2, but never saw an essential.

had a quick look...
http://www.acryan.com/product/playonhdessential/

not sure about details but seems the main differences between pohd (not available anymore right, only pohd2) are the networking, bit torrent, internet media features and more regular firmware updates. i wud think essential basically is for playback, firwmware is simpler, need not upgrade as often. pohd2's extra features are quite useful - radio, podcasts, youtube, etc. all come out nicely. but if you are sure you do not want all that, essential shud be fine.

heat... this is where i'm puzzled. been hearing this but my pohd is 2 yrs old, never found it too hot or even close. i suppose the problem may be placing in a tight space, no ventilation. there is now a "hdd spindown" feature - the builtin hdd or ext hdd will shut down after 5, 15 or 30min of inactivity. eseential shoud have same feature in the firmware - boxb can confirm.

but the result is same...
it always says i have to scan and fix the hdd inside the playonhd...

btw, is there a way to install back older firmware?
*
it is strange if you had formatted built in hdd with pohd. formatting it with pc will cause more problems.
if hdd is not readable at pc, possible the hdd is faulty, corrupted?

all firmwares are available at:
http://www.acryan.com/support/
just need to get the right ones and do it according to instructions in the pdf files.
for pohd, i do not know if there is a faster way, but i had reinstalled in this sequence, works fine:
3582->4824->3966->5440
if 5440 is a problem, then stop at 3966 or 4824.

*
Sure, just do:
3582->4824
you need to apply the "flash" procedure - it's in the pdf files found together with with the img file.
if you have the same problem after going back to 4824, something may be wrong with the hdd.

bro, thx for the info...
even my external hdd also got that error message after using it for the latest firmware...
either flash procedure will work right?
*
not sure what you mean by "either flash".
only one type of flashing - means holding the on/off button, then switch on power, release only when you see the first firmware being installed on screen.
then use upgrade option to install the rest in sequence.

if you have 5440 in the pohd, think cannot go back to older version by normal "upgrade" option.
must flash to wipe it clean, reinstall in sequence.
i also suspect the problem you had may be due to you going 4824 straight to 5440, skipping 3966.
you can do flashing, install 3582->4824 or go all the way 3582->4824->3966->5440 to see if this is the source of the problem.
no expert here, need boxb to confirm!

one thing... after installing 3966, you need to be patient when the gui2 comes on. default setting has autoscan set on so, it may take a minute or two before you can do anything. press stop to stop the scanning, wait until it stops, then continue. if you set autocan off now, it will stay off even after you install 5440.

i dun think you can buy playonhd, the first old model anymore.
better go for playonhd2 - newer more powerful chip.
main diff for pohd2, i think is usb 3.0 bs usb 2.0 - only good if yr pc and other connections are usb 3.0.
also can take 2TB built in hdd rather than 1.5TB.
basic functions, fairly similar. probably faster when navigating.

details, check and compare from website:

on the subject of dts-ma, i just tried...

pohd 1073dd chipset w/firmware r5440 - won't work, avr will process as dts only.
mini 1073dd c+ chipset w/firmware r5440 - works fine, avr will show dts-ma.

my pohd is >2yrs old, so i'm not unhappy about it. moreover, i use it mainly with an old avr that don't even have hdmi! biggrin.gif

glad that my mini works with dts-ma on a newer avr, so ok!

anyway, those files not many, so big, eat up hdd quickly. hopefully more will come when 5tb hdd at RM300 maybe? tongue.gif

hehe... you can buy another 3x2tb for backup/redundancy! biggrin.gif
that's why i said earlier, it's difficult to collect too many biggies, as there will be more to come.
i divide my stuff into 3 categories - 1. files on two hdds, can't afford to lose these; 2. saved on one hdd only - if gone, can get again, not so difficult; 3. on one hdd only - keep for now, chance i'll junk them later. total, i manage with 5tb. but i know the time will come, i'll need another 2-3tb. hopefully cost will come down faster...

i've been thru so many types of media incl laser discs and vhs... so i know this media files thingy will not be the last one. give it 5yrs, some other media may come out... change again?!!
