Just bought a 1 tera WD Black the other day, with 5 years warranty - sweet. Anyway, it runs hot! 54 celcius if continuous reading/writing in room temperature.
Almost same temperature as my 2 year old WD raptor.

Found the problem.
Casing fan stuck! Won't even move when I tried to move it with my fingers.
Replaced it and the now WD 1TB Black is running at 40 celcius during normal operation.

Anyway, here's a summary of my other HDDs right now.

WD1200JD (5 years old drive?) - 37 celcius normal operation
WD2500KS (4 years old drive) - 44 celcius normal operation
WD3200AAKS (2 years old drive) - 37 celcius normal operation (operating system)
WD6400AAKS (1 years old drive) - 39 celcius normal operation

I am going to retire the WD1200JD and WD2500KS soon.

I like to ask, is there a way to run SAS drives on desktop WITHOUT those PCIE SAS RAID cards?

dont think so, unless you are running high end server board.
and you need special sas cable too.
