A firmware problems with some of the Samsung F4 and F3 HDDs, namely the HD204UI/JP HD155UI, with Firmware Version: 1AQ10001 as detailed in here:
Using smartctl with Samsung F4 EcoGreen drives may result in data loss Samsung 2TB green drives defective firmware Thus far, the comments on the forum seems to say the problem is solved by flashing a new firmware into it. I think a lot of people has gotten the HD204UI for the cheap price, and since this is for backup, data loss is definitely a nono. Does anyone encounter data loss problem? Although I've been recommending people to get Samsung drives, it seems that it is best to avoid these drives for the time being, for the hassle of flashing a new firmware. QUOTE(spax @ Mar 22 2011, 03:55 PM) anyone here recommend getting 2tb black caviar ? Black caviar for storage is a dubious use of moneyi have 1tb, but smaller cache, using it as external so not much difference only copying files are much faster with teracopy. I surveyed lowyat, ask the sellers what happens to the black caviar perfomance if i use as external and they all said nothing just the speed. Black caviar for main drive is good, but if you can afford this as a main drive, maybe you should look for SSDs? |

QUOTE(cannavaro @ Oct 25 2011, 11:50 PM) Price of HDD has gone up... I'm shocked. WD's production capacity got halved due to this floodToday's pricelist - A Samsung HD103SJ is now RM212 or so at Viewnet.. can't remember exactly because I forgot to bring the pricelist (it was RM168-169 for quite a while) According to the staff the price will increase further in the coming weeks. He attributed the flood in Thailand as a factor to this.. http://www.tomshardware.com/news/seagate-w...lood,13802.html 25% of world's HDD are made in Thailand http://nexus404.com/Blog/2011/10/22/hard-d...ng-in-thailand/ Output dropping by 30% http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/44995733/ns/te...s/#.TqbfpbKNc_c Some people are blaming monopoly, or non Thailand HDD wont be affected. They forgot about this ![]() This post has been edited by kaiserreich: Oct 26 2011, 12:13 AM |

Other than the flood shutting down the hdd manufacturers, Nidec is submerged too Nidec supplies HDD motors and has 70% - 80% share of the HDD market It's reads as if all of Nidec's operations is in Thailand, I'm not very sure about that, but if that is true, then you can buy HDD now, sell off 2 months later and make huge profit |

Other manufacturers based on other country have an incentive to charge higher, no way it's gonna just be WD.
Gonna be an industry wide price hike, though, WD's prices might be higher than the rest due its larger exposure to the flood. This post has been edited by kaiserreich: Oct 27 2011, 01:14 AM |

QUOTE(SnoWFisH @ Nov 4 2011, 10:47 AM) I heard that in spite of the flooding events, Seagate Hard disk production has been limited by international organization to ensure "fair" business environment. How true is this? If true then this would not only drive hdd prices out of the ceiling but outer space Do you have a source for that?It sounds ridiculous |

QUOTE(Sata_Cable @ Nov 24 2011, 02:00 PM) True, i will never go for Seagate again because my Seagate freeagent suddenly died without any reason and all my data gone. It is just 2 years of using it and seldom use.I know its "NASIB". All things are not perfect. For warranty no point ,because the important thing is the data and very costly to recover it. I'm very sad because some of my work, personal stuff and research inside there. I cannot sleep the whole week because of losing very important data. For heavy stuff like pictures, double back up. They don't take up that much space, unless you shoot in RAW and keep every single copy of itFor work related/ research, etc. I use ![]() |
