QUOTE(Fantasia @ Jul 13 2010, 12:27 AM) This Zalman 3000U cooler is well made and works as advertised, ie, very quiet as any fan can be (not annoying like macbook internal fan noise) and cools the bottom of my hot macbook so that in my air conditioned house the cooler itself and my macbook is 'air conditioned cool' to touch. This model differs from the other Zalman notebook coolers in that this one has one big fan with pretty much clear through (with grills) opening on the top and bottom where as other ones have openings at the back end that channels air in from what I can see in the pictures. This black ZM-3000U (google Zalman site to get more details, pics, dimensions etc) looks sleek (big but not hefty) and functionally holds my macbook from sliding around or off rather very well (it can be knocked off accidentally if you hit it or something as it is not clamped down or such but otherwise the rubber stopper works well - my macbook has rubberized outer shell and I also use Kensington Comfort Notebook Wrist Rest which is made out of mostly rubber so rubber to rubber= no sliding). If you have, say, macbook pro with metal shell, I can't say how worse it would hold but can't be better I'd assume. 3000U is way oversized to my 13" macbook overall however the fan aluminum grill area almost perfectly matches the bottom and, as my palm often gets sweaty, a bit of nice cool, and gentle, breeze blows out from the sides that I can use to cool and dry my hand which is bonus. It does make my 13" macbook assembly now rather large but since I pretty much leave mine on the table it's not an issue and even if I were to, say, take it on a couch or bed I see no problem. 3000U comes with 3 USB jack hub that you can use on the back but you need to plug both USB plugs (included y USB/mini USB cable with 2 USB plugs) into your notebook to have sufficient power. It is a bit of pain as when I turn the fan off at the end of day my Time Machine backup external hard drive, which is powered by USB, gets turn off too; it's minor inconvenience. So I just plug in one main USB to run the fan without using the hub normally (but I have to use the hub if I need to plug in anything else as my macbook only has 2 USB jacks). I'm going to find a 5V wall wart in my parts bin to power the fan (Zalman proprietary ones are supposedly expensive). Here is the important thing I found out. How effective are these notebook coolers that cools outer shell: First of all, you need to get some kinda fan control software such as SMC fan control; if you don't manually set your laptop's minimum fan control speed at certain setting you laptop modulates it's fan speed depend on the the temperature it's sensing so what you get is no over all temperature difference. If you set minimum fan speed (mine at 3000rpm or whatever optimum noise level) then your Zalman cooler fan can influence the overall temp since your laptops fan does not slowdown to compensate for the now Zalman fan cooled cooler laptop. I now get some 6~10ºC or 10-15ºF overall drop in average temp when I'm using my computer lightly doing normal tasks. But when I watch videos, DL, or any heavy activity, well, although I'm sure the fan adds to cooling overall temp somewhat when notebook's internal fan doubles its speed and yet the temp jumps 40ºF+ it's hard to see it's affecting much to the overall temp I am afraid. It's like spraying water on fire: a small fire can be put out by small buckets of water but when the fire rages out of control the effect gets exponentially insignificant. So I'm concluding, in my opinion, this cooler does cool your laptop some in normal usage and pleasant to have however when going gets tough I don't believe any of this type of cooler has real effect on cooling a whole lot. Having said that I think any Zalman notebook cooler and particularly 3000U is one of the best ones you can have for this type of notebook cooler. I'm satisfied to have 3000U but it is what it is and not cure all. Btw [...] is awesome in delivery time. Maybe one of their warehouse is near by? I get stuff delivered literally in like a day or two and it's free delivery!! |
