well, can't really blame Apple totally... 3GS was released so as to keep Apple ahead in the competition... there was all sorts of new smartphones during that time, like Nokia ovi store, HTC Dream, etc...

only thing that, Android has evolved so aggressively (Android 1.0 to 2.2 in 2yrs, 6 updates in between, expanding it's capability with each update) that iPhone no longer gives Apple a huge edge over the other competitors... they may ve set the benchmark, but others are quick to match or surpass that too... right now the throne of King of Smartphone is definitely HTC Evo 4G, Samsung Galaxy S and Motorola Droid X...
