May God bless the soul of the architect that place the dormitories far away from the faculty which caused endless lost of lives due to motorcycle accident. Also not forgetting whoever is incharge of public transport for his idea of using tourist bus. Good job seriously for a Malaysian never stepped his foot out from Malaysia or better yet even into our southern neighbour.

my god u dont know how to assign the blame to the right people.

Then would you mind to tell me who? I'm sure being a typical malaysian one would put the blame on other trivial matter such as geographically challenging, lack of resource, money constraints etc. why cant a simple idea solve a problem?

Since you're an architect, you should be well aware that a university is for students and lecturers alike. No double standard on treatment should be allowed. Without students, there wont be lecturer and vice versa. Unfortunately from what i see in UPM and UTM, the ease of access to faculty is a privilege only to lecturer. you might argue to avoid traffic jams, but to avoid traffic jams, cant the buses be improved? There's a lot of area in UTM that can be improved but the funds seemed like channeled elsewhere. Even funding from HEMA on club activities is reduced. What unnecessary kind of project is UTM up to this time? A larger "Main Gate"?

Also shouldnt a university be concentrated? A better example of a accessible uni is UiTM

since u're not an architect, i assume u just dont care about the facts that influences a decision on the design, right?

1st, physical challenges are REAL.

2nd, UTM have been designed for privacy of the students and segregation of the academic, administrative and residential area. look at the planning, the residentials are located in the outer circle, academics in the inner circle and the administration in the center. this central planning is deliberate to ease the expansion of the university.

residential colleges are not a requirement for a university. but UTM decides to include it in the planning. walk outside UTM, son, and u'll see even top international universities cant accommodate its students population on campus. dont worry, i've been to a lot of them.

3rd, architects dont design planning. PLANNERS do.

4th, and we dont design roads and transports either. planners and road/transport engineers do.

5th, HEMA reduced budget for club activities because the university wants students to be independent and able to look for their own fundings. this is what all other international universities do. they look for their own fundings. what do u expect? people to spoon feed u based on a measly RM1,700 fees per semester?

6th, traffic jams in UTM are caused by inconsiderate users. look it up, it's been published in 2006. PERGI BACA!

7th, UiTM (shah alam) was one of the worse university plannings as it puts the residential building right next to the faculties. anti-social inbreeding, anyone?
there are reasons for UTM being the way it is. dont simply assume. if u dont know, ASK. jangan berlagak pandai.

Probably you're dissed that i put the blame on the architects since you're one of them. We students have so much to fill with our times, we dont have the luxury to linger around with reports on the development of UTM. We talk based on experience and lecturers or the administrators wont probably know that because you all are granted the luxury of 4 wheel vehicles (except the fact that you'll despise the uneven yet inconsistent speed bumps). But ill try my best NOT pointing fingers right now. I'm not berlagak pandai'ing and my apologies if u think i did.

Since the development involve planners, engineers and some politicians I understand that it is hard to make a university conducive for both parties. But other universities has done it, why not in Malaysia? For instance, NTU. There are 2 simple elements that make it an accessible university to both students and lecturers.

1. Multi level hostel (I'm talking about more than 5 floors, nearer to lingkaran dalam)

Why must they build it at lingkaran luar?
Yes, land is cheaper in Malaysia compared to Singapore that's why everything is so spread out. But economically speaking, isn't it better to flatten a single land and building a multi-storey building rather than trying to flatten(to the level of able to build safely). Probably the cost can be covered by less funds being channeled to public transport?

2. Efficient public transport system

Im not sure who's f***ing idea is it to use tourist bus as public transport.(F word intended) Have you ever seen students cramped dangerously inside a bus? I bet you never have been into our UTM bus for an outing. If u havent, I recommend you to take it to Jusco every weekend night. You'll understand what I mean and what is failing here.
Just wait till a student drop off from the bus and die. Then only action would be taken. Typical malaysians, sudah terhantuk baru tergadah.
A simple alternative, so to say that you want to save money is to allow public bus company to operate in UTM. They have a standing section with grapples for passengers standing. Safer, efficient, no late to class anymore.
Probably there are better alternatives an expert can introduce to help solve this problem

I have few more insights about UTM based on my eye observation but ill leave it to others' opinions. Back to LAB mode...

Im 99% well aware that my simpleton solution have been thought of but problem is the execution of the solution. Since there's no execution, that 1% exist lingering around my mind.
Also, students should have more info on this sort of issue that matters(About UTM Plans) to them in www.utm.my together with achievement news or event news by UTM to avoid another keyboard warrior like me reappearing in the near future and rant all over again.

on another note, do you mean there are 3 new buses which are actually transport buses and not tourist buses used in UTM? would u mind telling me which one? Its been long since i ride buses in UTM since im currently taking the risk of being on top of "the most number of death caused by..." for the sake of convenience. Maybe they shud ban the 2 wheel "one way ticket to heaven" instead of booze? brows.gif jking

but Tram is gonna be waaaay expensive, especially the terrain is up down up down, cycling in UTM is quite tiring. bus shud be more feasible for short term.
btw NTU is in the process of buidling a tram that connects all around their campus, they can be made as a reference.

i cant imagine the tram going uphill at FKE, gonna lol if it gets stuck
